Dear Friends,

As I write this letter I am now completing my first full week as vicar and I have to say that Graham and I are both really pleased that we came here. We have been blown away by the warmth of the welcome that we have received, the beauty of the surrounding countryside and the vibrancy of our four churches and communities. I would like to thank you all for making our arrival such a good and happy one and look forward to getting to know you all much better and to be a part of the next chapter in the life of our Benefice.

Having said all that, I have to admit that I wasn’t at all sure about starting my ministry here at the beginning of Lent – after all, isn’t this meant to be a time of penitence and fasting? However, now that I am here, I’m beginning to feel differently. I have no doubt that there will be many good and exciting things ahead of us – the first of which is Easter, and plans are already in full swing to ensure that it is the great and meaningful occasion that it should be. Details of everything taking place in our villages are listed elsewhere in this magazine.

It’s also at this time of year that I am reminded of an incident that happened a few years ago. I was asked to take an R.E. lesson for a class of 7 & 8 year olds in a local primary school. During the lesson we looked at some of the symbolism connected to Easter and the hidden meanings behind Hot Cross Buns and Easter Eggs. I then asked the children to decorate hard-boiled eggs with pictures of anything that they thought apt for the season.

The children worked hard before coming forward to show everyone what they had done and tell us the meaning. Obviously we had the cross but we also had grass and flowers for new growth, we had chickens and rabbits for new life, we had sunshine and blue skies for happiness and we had some quite intricate decorations to remind us of the beauty of Gods creation – every single egg showed a great deal of thought and had a definite spiritual meaning that was appropriate for the season.

Save Headcorn Village Update

Stand By…

There is still no certainty of when the Hazelpits site (amongst others) will come before MBC’s Planning Committee. However, we understand it is likely to be Thursday 16th April at 6pm.

Despite the MBC Cabinet deciding to remove many sites from their new draft Local Plan, developers’ agents are highly motivated by the huge potential profit from such developments and we suspect they will be attempting legal challenges to appeal against MBC’s decision. We understand the Headcorn Matters team is striving to present the Headcorn Neighbourhood plan to the parishioners for consultation very soon – and this will help a good deal.

However, it might not be soon enough and planning agents might have unknown legal avenues to explore. So please, keep alert for confirmation of the Committee date and try your best to attend with us. We’ll be doing all we can to make as much “noise” as we can at that meeting because we know as fact that it can make all the difference. headcornvillage.org.uk/saveheadcornvillage

Then Charlie (the class clown) came forward – instead of painting his egg with intricate pictures he had simply plastered thick dark blue food colouring all over it, then, because he had finished before anyone else and was getting bored he had decided to use it as a football. You can imagine the result. What we were presented with was a dark and broken mass – very different from the offerings of his classmates. “So what’s this telling us about Easter?” I asked – quick as a flash came the reply “It’s Jesus bursting from his tomb”.

I will never forget that incident – but it taught me a lot – not least that I shouldn’t take things at face value. But it also sums up what happened when Christ died on the cross for us all. God intervened in the history of the world by sending his son not simply to improve what was already here, but to shatter the hold that the old dark order of things, things governed by sin and death, have on human kind. Having shattered that hold, he then showed us a new and much better way based on perfect love and self sacrifice and the promise of everlasting life spent with him and the Father in heaven. And that is the true meaning of Easter.

With love and Blessings to you all this Easter.

Headcorn Parish Council News

Since MBC voted to take Headcorn sites that do not currently have planning permission out of their Local Plan, things may appear to have quietened down a little in the village. However, rest assured that behind the scenes work continues towards addressing some of the issues. Meetings have taken place with Southern Water, and the independent Drainage Assessment commissioned by the

Headcorn Matters team has provided substantive evidence of sewage problems within the village. This evidence was also discussed when Councillors recently met with MBC Cabinet Members and Planning Officers. It needs to be noted, however that in the strange world of planning more processes need to be completed and nothing has yet been decided, so current planning applications for 220 houses behind Millbank and 48 houses on the Lenham Road may yet be granted.

Parish Office Now Open The Parish Office (situated above the House Meeting Room in the Village Hall) is now open to the public at the following times Monday 10am – 2pm Wednesday 1pm – 5pm Thursday 10am – 2pm Friday 10am – 2pm

Please feel free to telephone or visit the clerk, Caroline Carmichael during these hours. Caroline can be contacted on 01622 892496. Please note that the email address has changed to [email protected]. The following number may be used to contact the clerk only in absolute emergencies. 07956 440713.

Annual Parish Meeting We look forward to seeing you at the Annual Parish Meeting on Thursday 23rd April at 7.30p.m in Longmeadow Hall. It is the opportunity to hear about what has been an eventful year for the Parish Council.

In Memory of Peter Holmes (1929 – 2015)

Based on the talks given by members of his family at his funeral on 25th February 2015.

Peter, who was a beloved husband, cherished father of three, adored grandpa of eight, much-loved brother and uncle, and dear friend to so many. Peter left school in 1948 and having passed the Civil Service Exams, and having performed his National Service, he took up his first post as a public servant - opting for this rather than Cambridge. He was proud to have been asked to serve Her Majesty overseas in the Board of Trade, firstly in Hong Kong and later in Brisbane, Australia. This period of his life brought not only great professional satisfaction but also the opportunity to use his talents to sing in the cathedral choirs in Hong Kong and Brisbane. His picture still hangs in the vestry in Hong Kong Cathedral today.

Peter was the epitome of his generation, the generation known to us as "the Great Generation". The one that was born between around 1900 and the mid 1930's. They are the men and women who after the War built or rebuilt the nations of the Western world into the economic powerhouses that they have become. They knew the meaning of sacrifice and commitment, both in terms of material possessions and of real blood, sweat, and tears. They were humble people who never bragged about what they had done or had been through. They were loyal, patriotic, and level-headed.

After retirement Peter and Margaret settled in Headcorn in 1968, and brought up his family in this community. His granddaughter (Philippa) remembered his preferred method of escorting her to church - ‘big skips’. “He would hold my hand and tow me along the church path doing exaggerated skips, which as I was only tiny meant I would fly through the air. I still vividly remember the breathless exhilaration I felt by his side”.

Peter served God through Headcorn Church as a member of the choir, a PCC member, a churchwarden, a lesson reader, and an intercessor through these 47 years. His watchwords were duty and loyalty. Peter and Margaret celebrated their Diamond Wedding anniversary last summer.

He was brave. Even after finding out about his severe medical condition in December, he still had a smile on his face. His faith was strong to the end. Finally, on February 6th his sun finally set, and so ended a truly remarkable life of faith and service.

In Memory of Norman Cook

Norman was a Wolverhampton man of parents George and Amy Cook and was married to Madeline whom he met on the dance floor. He played drums with ‘Johnny Morton and his Mellody Boys’ and his love of the dance band era and traditional jazz has been passed to his daughter Barbara.

Norman was a keen amateur photographer, which has been a gift leaving his family with hundreds of family slides of happy times spent together.

Being a Christian is what has defined Norman’s life and he was an altar server for many years in Wombourne Parish Church and later here in Headcorn. He also loved to sing with the choir.

The last year has been a difficult time with Norman being moved to Whitstable nursing home but despite the miles between them Madeline and Norman never lost their faith and he finally has peace. Barbara Cook

Messy Church Report

‘Why do we need to say thank you?’ asked five-year-old Martha as she solemnly stuck tulips on to the most ingenious pop up card. By the end of two hours

of Messy Church in Headcorn’s Longmeadow Hall she couldn’t say it enough as she gathered up all the things she had made. The craft activities kept little ones busy for over an hour until it was time to gather round and hear about about the story of the Ten Lepers. The children sat transfixed as our new vicar Fiona explained how Jesus once healed ten lepers of their terrible disease - but only one returned to say thank you. They learnt how even today, when things go our way, it’s easy to forget how important those two words are. However good or bad things get, there is always something to be thankful for - God’s love. Here are a few other thank you’s as well - thank you to Fiona for coming to join our community, thank you to all the helpers for such an enjoyable and uplifting afternoon. But the biggest thank you of all goes to those who provided the delicious tea and cakes. They were heaven sent.

A Big 'THANK YOU'

On Thursday 19th February, I held a fund raising event to help sponsor my daughter Verity. who will be running in the London Marathon in April. She is running in memory of her Dad who had Multiple Sclerosis and died 4 years ago.

We had an 'Open House' from 10 o’clock until 4p.m, serving tea, coffee and lots of lovely (fattening!) cakes, sausage rolls etc. We also had a tombola- guess how many sweets in the sweet jar and guess the name of the MS Mascot .

I'd like to say a very Big Thank You to everyone who gave donations, made lovely cakes, donated prizes for the tombola, and finally to friends and family who helped on the day. As a result we raised well over £500 (the money is still coming in!). A very successful and enjoyable day! Barbara Totterdell

Dough 625g flour 90g butter 90g Caster Sugar 2 eggs 15ml mixed spices 5ml salt 180g currants 60g mixed peel

Crossing Paste 125g flour 150ml water 30ml oil

Sugar Glaze 150g sugar 150ml water 5ml gelatine

Bring sugar and water to the boil. Boil for one minute then add gelatine. Allow to cool before using.

Did you know…

Hot Cross Buns are said to have originated in 1361 at St Albans Abbey when one of the monks baked them for the poor on Good Friday.

Method

Mix the yeast and sugar, then add the flour and pour in warmed milk. Let it stand for 30 minutes at room temperature (or 15 minutes in a warm place) to froth. Rub butter into the flour and salt, and add sugar and spice. Add eggs to ferment and mix well. Stir ferment into flour, mix well and knead for 5 minutes. Add currants and peel, and knead for a further 5 minutes. Place dough into a bowl, cover with cling film and leave in a warm place to double in size (approx. 30 minutes). Knock dough back and shape into balls. Place the balls onto a greased baking tray, cover and leave to rise in a warm place. When risen, pipe a cross on top of the bun using a piping bag filled with the crossing paste. Bake at 220˚c for 15 minutes. When cooked, brush immediately with sugar glaze.

A Sprig of Bracken

Woof! Let me introduce myself I’m Bracken a young Golden Retriever. I may not be very old but feel I have learnt a lot already like to keep my teeth clean “a carrot a day” as my vet says. Now that it is Spring I have lots of things to look out for like Easter eggs (chocolate) and lilies (spring bulbs) which are not very good for me if I eat them or those lovely spring bulbs I would like to dig up given half the chance.

I must go out now and enjoy the spring sunshine whilst it lasts. More about my walks next time.......!

Yours Bracken

The Garden in April

April is a busy time in the garden with much to do and little time available. Jobs almost too numerable to mention are waiting to be done in the vegetable garden and it is the start of the regular lawn mowing season. I think of the first line of Robert Browning’s poem, “O to be in England now that April’s there...” Perhaps this month we shall also hear the cuckoo open its bill. One of my favourite signs of spring is when the leaf buds

burst on the Spiraea japonica Goldflame, an attractive medium sized shrub. The buds are a wonderful red-orange colour which then come out into red-orange tinged leaves. Later the leaves seem to develop into two-tone yellow and soft green and later still, in summer, I am rewarded with lots of fluffy pink flowers.

At the end of the month it is time to plant out healthy dormant dahlia tubers. I always plant mine in pots first to get new shoots well established before planting outside. Left in the ground the slugs will eat the new shoots before they even appear above the ground! I read in the paper the other day that we may be in for a “good” slug year as the winter was not cold enough to reduce their numbers very much. Clumps of dahlia tubers can be divided to increase your stock. Each new plant needs a bud or growing shoot.

Delphiniums may need staking later in the month as the heavy flowers will need some attention. Twiggy pea sticks are a good support here. I use one of those metal supports for my pink peony. The stems grow up through the tough metal mesh and the large flowers are supported by the framework – by this time hardly noticeable. These supports seem expensive initially but I have used one for the same plant for many years.

Don’t forget to visit Headcorn Gardeners Spring Show in the Andred Hall on Saturday 18 April at 2.00p.m. There is always lots to see.

A Message of Thanks

It must have come as a considerable relief to many not only to hear that a new Vicar had been appointed to our United Benefice but also to know that the Reverend Fiona Haskett, together with husband, Graham, was actually here in person poised to lead Headcorn and the 3 Suttons forward into the future. Her service of Institution and Installation, admirably led by the Right Reverend Trevor Willmott, Bishop of Dover, was truly memorable dominated as it was by a sense of joy and love brought among us by the presence of the Holy Spirit. It must have been evident to all that Fiona could scarcely wait to begin her ministry among us.

For keeping Church life across the Benefice moving so smoothly during the interregnum, our sincerest thanks must go to all those who have ministered to us, in addition to the churchwardens and all their faithful helpers. With this in mind, I particularly wish to ' turn ' to the Reverend David Trustram. It is worth reminding everyone that David -and Anne-Marie- moved into Headcorn some five years ago as the retired Vicar of Tenterden, no doubt hoping for a time of respite and peace. Yet within a very short time, David, in his discreet and unassuming manner, was giving much of himself to us here in Headcorn as well as to the other churches in the Benefice notably following the departure of Chis Lavender to Allington and during the weeks of the Interregnum.

There is a sense of calm and peace about David, especially evident in the 2 special forms of worship he led towards the end of last year: the half-hour service for Trevor Hillman when with great compassion and love he helped those present to turn a place that had become dark into a place of light ; and the 4.00pm time of remembrance when members of the congregation came to pray and centre their thoughts on the passing of someone dear to them. In his gentle and sensitive manner, David guided us all in a very moving service. In the previous Sunday sermon, our great friend Doug Redman had referred to Christ's parable of the talents. There can be little doubt that David has moved well past the stage of doubling his talents.

In addition, our grateful thanks are due to others who have helped us during the interregnum :

The Reverend Doug Redman, The Reverend Pearl Anderson, The Reverend To-ny Old, The Reverend Paul Kish, The Reverend Caroline Pinchbeck as well as Joan Drury. We have been truly blessed in being able to share their company in our midst.
