Discuss some of the following questions.

What have you eaten?

Are you surprised at how much or how little you eat?

Would you describe your diet as healthy?

What could you change about your diet to make it healthier?

Your Diet

The majority of people are quite surprised when they keep a food diary because it shows them how much they actually eat.

Often, we eat without even stopping to consider what we are eating or why we are eating it.

You might like to spend some time over the next week keeping a food diary.

Doing this will allow you to monitor how much you eat and possibly stop eating things which are not necessary.

What Is A Healthy Diet?

What is a healthy diet for one person may not be as healthy

for another person.

Can you think of any reasons why this might be the case?

Some people are allergic to certain foods

Other people do not like the taste of certain foods

It is important to understand that, whilst we can discuss what

a healthy diet is, no two people will ever share the same healthy diet.

Healthy Diets – What Do You Know?

Not everybody will agree on which foods are healthy and which are unhealthy.

In fact, none of the foods named on the previous slide are so bad for you that you should give them up completely.

However, you should eat these things in moderation.

What does moderation mean?

To eat foods in moderation means eating sensible amounts of each.

For example, don’t eat sweets every day, but perhaps treat yourself to them once per week.

Which Foods Are Healthy?

Look at the traffic lights below. Imagine the different colour lights represent food and drink that we should and should not consume. For each colour, try to name different types of food and drink. One example for each has been done for you.

When you have finished, discuss your answers as a class.

Chocolate

Fruit

White bread

Which Foods Are Healthy?

You may have thought of many more answers of your own.

What we now know is that whilst most foods can be eaten in moderation, some foods are better for us than others.

Task

Using the information you have written on your traffic lights, try to develop a healthy school lunch menu for your school.

This menu should be different each day and should last for one week.
