Spring Festival

You get to give and you get to receive, all the while munching on delicious food and maintaining a pleasant level of blood alcohol. Christmas is built on traditions and they are also what make this holiday season so special. But, traditions are only worth the function they serve, so if they are not meaningful to you, then you need not worry about them. In that case, why not choose your own Christmas? Create some of your own traditions. If you want to have a Christmas pizza and watch Die Hard on Blue Ray, then go right ahead! Christmas does not need to be about following a tradition, but about being joyful, sharing that joy, and maybe giving a present or two to the people close to you.

Spring Festival in China is the biggest annual migration of people in this continent sized country. People travel in masses to be home for this holiday, as family is the most important element in this celebration. It alignes itself with the lunar calendar, on our calendar, usually in January or February. A varied series of

Christmas is a day of celebration no matter if you choose to celebrate the birth of Christ, decorate the Christmas tree, seat around the table with your family, or just be relieved that you don’t have to work on the 24th of December.

Doesn't really matter if you are Christian, Muslim, Buddhist or an Atheist, Christmas is about values, and these are universal and undistinguishing. The undeniable will to share our lives with loved ones and celebrate that, is felt across many countries and cultures, whether is Christmas in the West, Spring Festival in China or Dawali in India.

is also prepared and shared with family. Cleaning the house, presenting loved ones with gifts and visiting friends and relatives is also customary, making this a holiday of respect, sharing and beauty.

Out of experience, we know it can be hard to spend Christmas in another country. You are far away from your homeland, and Christmas can be a little intimidating given all the new and different traditions you might be faced with. To ease you into your Czech Christmas, here is an introduction: first of all, you have to remember that Santa does not come to the Czech Republic, at least not in the traditional way. On the 5th of December, St. Nicholas arrives

accompanied by angels and demons. He brings stocking filling presents such as fruit and chocolate. That does not mean however that there will be no bigger presents. The presents come by the hand of Baby Jesus on Christmas Eve, and he always rings a bell before leaving. Just how he gains access to your home is up for debate... some might imagine him as flying in and out of windows with a little jetpack! Others might just feel that he is with them all the time, in their hearts.Presents are traditionally opened after the meal, where fish soup, carp and potato salad are indispensable items. Fruit, apple strudel and vánočka (Christmas bread) will also mostly be present to sweeten your palate. Many people also like to arrange for the single girls in the family to throw a shoe over their shoulders, following a custom that if the shoe lands facing the door, the girl will be married in the following year. Flying shoes aside, Christmas away from your home country need not be a lonely and boring ordeal. You have all you need right here in Ostrava, to make your Christmas days awesome. And, if you feel your stomach groaning after reading this, jump over to our food section and have a look at the Christmas recipe we have tested out for you.

So whether you are having a traditional Czech Christmas or just kicking back with a few friends watching some bad movies, we here at Yogurt wish you a wonderful time.

FOR ALL LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO DO DURING THE COLD DECEMBER DAYS,Yogurt recommends taking a look at some of the Christmas markets around the city. What is there not to like in strolling outside, looking at beautiful handicraft and sipping hot wine?

The biggest one is on the main square and it will keep going for most of December. It offers an abundance of little stalls selling everything from home made socks to hot spiced wine. There will even be an ice skating rink and a small petting zoo.

However, if you feel like being out of the snow, there are a couple of indoor markets as well. Cooltour has one on the 21st of December and it promises to be a lot of fun. Entry is from 10:00 to 18:00 and it’s free. They will have a lot of indoor stalls, selling hand crafted items made locally and even workshops for both adults and children. To avoid people browsing the wares on an empty stomach, all the traditional Christmas market food and drinks will also be available, like soups, sweets and delicious hot punch .If you feel brave and decide to take on the weather, Cooltour also has an outdoor stage which they will be putting to good use, entertaining the children with two fairy tales.

As an added bonus, Cooltour invites you to be a part of the market as a seller. If you have any clothes just lying around the house, stick a price tag on it and sell it at the market. Call now for more information on: 734 720 666

Many people agree that to be successful you must think positive, but simply thinking positively and applying the ‘Law of Attraction’ alone, doesn’t always get you the results you desire. There is some research that suggests that positive thinking on its own is not effective. In a study led by Lien Pham, a group of university students were asked to visualise getting a high grade in an exam, but surprisingly got lower marks as they were less motivated to work, and subsequently studied less. Similarly, repeating statements like ‘I am a lovely person’ to yourself in a mirror did not bring about the desired results, only making people feel worse about themselves if they didn’t truly believe what they were saying.

Generally, negative thinkers will picture all the things that can go wrong, making them more anxious and leading to lower expectations. Some however, will transform their anxiety into action and this will motivate them to try harder. The world also

needs people who think negatively, who anticipate the worst and prepare us all for it. Negative thinking will help avoid danger and improve inventions; a critical eye can uncover flaws that can be fixed.

Thinking positively might help make bad events more bearable, but it is not a miracle fix.

Equally, always trying to stop negative thinking can inadvertently cause more frustration, negativity, denial or neglect.

Both types of thinking are not healthy in their respective extremes. The secret to

success is not linked to thinking positively or negatively, but rather choosing a strategy that matches your thinking style and simply putting it into action.

The saying “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade”, does not refer to thinking about lemonade, or wishing that you never got lemons, or that you got greener ones or sweeter ones, but its essence is about taking action and making something work with what you got.

To get a positive outcome in life, a series of actions is necessary and without it, there is little chance you will ‘attract’ the success you deserve. Find out what type of thinker you are, and work with it to achieve what you desire.

X-MAS

A varied series of

customs and beliefs accompany this holiday but something that is shared across the spectrum, is the habit of cleaning the house, putting up decorations, and making good wishes for the coming year. Paper cuttings, lanterns, the character 福 ("fu", meaning blessings or happiness), fill the walls, windows and doors of every household and

Equally in India, Dawali, is celebrated across the immense number of faiths present. Each one chooses to interpret this celebration according to their beliefs, but all of them recognise the true message worth

What makes Christmas great is that it is like a birthday, except that it is everybody’s birthday.

shop. Family make dumplings together and eat riceballs filled with sweet and savoury ingredients, and each dish has an auspicious meaning and time to be consumed.Little red envelopes with money are presented, as well as oranges and other gifts.

celebrating: the victory of good over evil. Also called the “Festival of Lights”, because of the ritual of lighting up lamps, setting of fireworks, making bonfires and decorating the home with electric lights, many festive food

is also prepared and shared with family.

ChristmasEYECANDY

A varied series of

customs and beliefs accompany this holiday but something that is shared across the spectrum, is the habit of cleaning the house, putting up decorations, and making good wishes for the coming year.
