According to the World Health Organization, “health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social

well-being and not merely the absence of in-firmity.” A healthy community, as described by the U.S. Department of Health and Hu-man Services Healthy People 2010 report, “is one that continuously creates and improves both its physical and social environments, helping people to support one another in as-pects of daily life and to develop to their full-est potential.” The Center for Disease Control (CDC) describes healthy places as “those designed and built to improve the quality of life for all people who live, work, worship, learn, and play within their borders — where every person is free to make choices amid a variety of healthy, available, accessible, and affordable options.”

It is these two principles that embody the spirit of this publication. Our goal is to take a broad and inclusive approach to Health & Wellness. It’s not simply about medicine. It’s about spiritual and physical health.

The Pine Falls Traditional Healing Centre opened to the public this past Spring. It was designed to provide better, more culturally diverse health care services to families in Powerview-Pine Falls and the surrounding

First Nations. The new centre will provide access to First Nations traditions, culture, language, ceremonies, healing and teach-ing lodges for anyone seeking this kind of holistic and natural care.

The centre also goes by the Ojibway name, Giigewigamig (Kee-gay-ga-mik), mean-ing “a place of healing.” The First Nation communities of Sagkeeng, Black River and Hollow Water came together to create the Giigewigamig First Nation Health Authority working group to manage program develop-ment of the new traditional healing centre at Pine Falls. Elders from these communities are working through Order in Council from elected leaders to lead Giigewigamig.

This new centre is a shining example of the principles of health and healthy places stated above. Not only does it strive to provide more culturally diverse options for health care, the cooperation of the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority and the Giigewigamig First Nation Health Authority in bringing this vision to life, is a big step towards reconciliation with first nations communities. The colonial history of Canada and its relationship with First Nations people has left a deep wound. The bridges built by this centre are a step towards healing that wound. The centre emphasizes the impor-tance of cultural health and wellness in addition to the health and wellness of the individual.

What is Spiritual Health? www.gov.mb.ca/healthyliving

People seek meaning in order to live authentically with each other. This can become a particular set of spiritual be-

liefs, guiding the ultimate purpose of our life. Spirituality contributes to health in many

ways. It is how a person searches for mean-ing, through religion and/or belief in a god, through relationships with family, or partici-pation in naturalism, rationalism, humanism and the arts. This can affect how people who need health care as well as how health care providers understand health and illness.

In caring for the whole human being, there is a need to focus on each aspect of what makes a person human. The most vis-ible is our body. The second aspect is that of thinking, engaging our minds. A third aspect is feeling, which emerges in emo-tions and forms the dynamic energy of our relationships. And the fourth aspect of self is the spiritual. Its deafinitions are constantly evolving as understanding of this vital area of health care changes.

Healing is rooted in the concept of whole-ness. A physical health care need, such as an illness, may be a symptom of a deeper and more complex need for healing the whole person. In health care, there is growing awareness that spiritual care is a vital aspect of care for the whole person.

Spirituality has been defined as the beliefs and practices that develop people’s personal values and concept of meaning relating to the purpose of life. There are three compo-nents to an individual’s spiritual dimension:

1. Making personal meaning, which may or may not include reference and connection to an ultimate source of life

2. Coming to an understanding of self 3. Appreciating the need and value of con-

nections with others

This quest for the discovery of what we hold sacred and worthwhile in life can take a traditional path through organized religions, wisdom traditions and indigenous spiritual practice. Or, the quest may take other paths of discovery such as contemplative practice, mindfulness, 12-step programs, retreat cen-tres and dream groups.

WHAT IS THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN RELIGION AND SPIRITUALITY?

Religious traditions have distinct beliefs, sacred texts, traditions and forms of worship, including rituals, whereas spirituality can be seen as a universal experience.

Spirituality is not necessarily tied to any particular religious belief or tradition. Although culture and beliefs (including reli-gious beliefs) can play a part in spirituality, people have their own unique experience of spirituality regardless of religious orienta-tion.

From Manitoba Health

There is a growing awareness that spirituality, or the way a person searches for and finds meaning, is

part of human wellness. Spiritual health care must become part of health care theory and practice. Plato was the first to claim that it is impossible to heal the body without know-ing something about the soul because we are, by nature, part of a greater wholeness.1 Later researchers and writers have studied this reality. For example, Cobb and Robshaw state “there is what many people recognize as a spiritual quality to life, which, in suf-fering, confronts people with questions and possibilities that reach beyond the immediate dilemmas of physical insult.”

In 1998, the World Health Organiza-tion endorsed a proposal to include the word “spiritual” in its description of overall health.4 The connections between spiritual beliefs, practices and mental and physical health are a growing area of research that is finding its way into practice. The discipline of spiritual health care brings together our

Spiritual health

thinking, beliefs, behaviour and culture to address the many ways human beings seek to be well in body, mind, relationships and soul. Research has demonstrated that positive religious involvement and positive spiritual understanding are closely linked with better health outcomes and longer life expectancy.

‘Health and the Human Spirit’ is a Mani-toba Health strategic plan in response to the growing awareness that spirituality, or the way a person searches for and finds meaning is part of human wellness. The plan identifies ways in which spiritual health care can be-come enhanced within the current delivery of health care and represents a commitment to advancing the contribution of spiritual health care in Manitoba.  The plan builds on what has been established and envisions a fuller integration of all health care disci-plines under the common goal of healing and well-being.

Commercial Tobacco

Commercial tobacco is completely different than traditional tobacco. Commercial tobacco is a destroyer,

while traditional tobacco is a healer.Commercial tobacco is an industrial

product containing dangerous and toxic chemicals.

There are many types of commercial tobacco products sold in Canada. The most known commercial product that is manufac-tured and sold across the world are ciga-rettes. Did you know cigarettes have over 4000 harmful chemicals in them…including at least 43 known cancer-causing chemicals!

Other commercial tobacco products besides cigarettes are smokeless tobacco products such as chew and snuff, flavoured products, pipes and cigars, and electronic cigarettes/vaporizers.

Traditional (Sacred) Tobacco

What is traditional Tobacco? Several First Nations people and commu-nities in Canada use traditional

tobacco. The sacred uses of tobacco will vary

from community to community but a truth remains constant, tobacco should be used for prayer, protection, respect and healings.

Elders teach that tobacco is one of the four sacred medicines (Sacred Tobacco, Sweet Grass, Cedar, and Sage) placed on Earth for our use. When Sacred Tobacco is used prop-erly it can be used to communicate with the Spirit World and the Creator.

Traditional Tobacco is used to:• Pray;• Give thanks to the Creator and Mother

Earth;• Communicate with the spirits; and• Purify the mind and heal the body.

Traditional Methods of Using Sacred Tobacco:

The smoke from tobacco being burned on sacred fires or in sacred pipes rises to the sky, carrying prayers to the spirit world.

Sacred Tobacco can be used as offerings to say prayers and give thanks to the Creator.

Sacred Tobacco in combination with other plants/herbs is used to treat some illnesses.

Tobacco is always offered first before guidance, advice, ceremonies, or taking from the animal or spirit world.

Mental health

By Kathleen Keating-Toews

Imagine living in a world where hor-rifying memories are so vivid, the lines between past and present are blurred.

You spend your waking hours on high alert. You feel intense fear. You see threats everywhere. You have difficulty sleeping, and when you do sleep, nightmares plague you.

LUCAS JACKSON / REUTERS FILESSome people suffering from trauma abuse

substances in a bid to feel “normal.”You experience extreme mood swings.

Others may simply see you as a difficult person to be around.

Few understand you, many don’t want to. You may even struggle to understand yourself.

For others, the symptoms might be less severe, but nevertheless, an impact is made.

This is the nature of trauma. Now imagine there is something you can

take that can help you feel instant relief.

Imagine you can take something that can help you to feel “normal” again.

This is the nature of substance abuse. Finally, imagine you cannot stop seeking

relief this way because it is the only way you ever feel better.

This is the nature of addiction. The Addictions Foundation of Manitoba

defines addiction as an unhealthy relation-ship between a person and a mood- or mind-altering substance, experience, event or activity, which contributes to life prob-lems and their recurrence. Those who have experienced trauma are vulnerable.

Trauma is an experience that overwhelms a person, leaving them with a sense of fear, helplessness and horror. Various events can produce a traumatic experience. It can be anything from the breakdown of a relation-ship to domestic abuse to living through war. A person’s response to these types of events will differ between individuals depending on factors such as age, coping skills and family and support networks.

Analysis: Trauma, substance abuse often intertwined

Trauma occurs in many forms. First-hand trauma can arise from experiences such as surviving assault. Secondary trauma can oc-cur in situations such as with crisis-support workers who hear daily accounts of traumat-ic experiences. Trauma can also be passed down intergenerationally, such as with the ongoing impact of residential schools.

Trauma can display itself in multiple ways, such as anxiety, physical pain, difficul-ties with relationships, intense flashbacks and nightmares. Clusters of symptoms that lead to major difficulties over an extended period of time might result in a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), though not all traumatic experiences will lead to PTSD.

Trauma is not an uncommon experience.According to the Manitoba Trauma Infor-

mation and Education Centre, between 55 and 90 per cent of all people have experi-enced at least one traumatic life event. In addition to addiction, trauma contributes to a number of other health and social issues. Trauma and addiction can happen to anyone of any age, gender, cultural or socio-econom-ic background.

Although not everyone who experiences trauma is at risk of substance abuse or ad-diction, the connection is well-established. The two have a cruel relationship -- each one feeding off the other.

The biological connections between trau-ma and addiction are deeply layered, com-plex and variable depending on individual circumstances. Simply put, the human brain develops over time and is sculpted by experi-ence. Distressing life events produce changes within the brain to adapt to its environment. The threat-detection centre within the brain responsible for the freeze, fight or flight responses, can become hyper-reactive. At the same time, the memory centre malfunctions, resulting in the re-experiencing of distress-ing events. The survivalist areas of the brain take over and decrease the person’s ability to inhibit behaviour.

An understanding of the psychological connections between trauma and addiction is vital. We all have a need to feel safe and content. Despite risks, some people seek re-

lief from the overwhelming feelings trauma creates by misusing substances.

Further, the ability to change addic-tive behaviour based on previous negative experiences may also be impaired because of changes in the brain, so the cycle continues.

Understanding the nature of trauma does not mean we excuse the behaviours and societal harms associated with addiction. Rather, this understanding helps us have compassion, and that is a critical component for healing. Addictions Foundation Manitoba encourages others to accept the challenge of being compassionate to those who are dealing with trauma and addiction. For those who are directly affected, the act of self-compassion can be an excellent motivator for positive change.

One of the greatest factors in healing from trauma and addiction is resiliency, a term once tied to the engineering field to describe materials and structures that can withstand severe conditions.

Today, we recognize resiliency as the abil-ity to rebound from adversity. In weaving the fabric of resiliency, it is not the single thread that withstands the weight of agoniz-ing experience. Families, communities and larger systems represent the other threads we must weave together to create a cloak of protection.

Imagine mending the wounds of the soul using the threads from the fabric of resil-iency.

This is the nature of hope.Kathleen Keating-Toews is with the Ad-

dictions Foundation of Manitoba’s Knowl-edge Exchange Centre. If alcohol, drugs or gambling are causing problems for you or someone you know, call 1-855-662-6605 or visit afm.mb.ca.

Many fad diets claim to help you lose weight fast in a short period of time, but do they really work?

While some people do lose weight when following the latest fad diet, the diets are not always healthy, they can be nutrition-ally unbalanced and weight loss is often temporary. For weight loss to last long term, it is important to make healthy changes to your lifestyle.

Fill up on vegetables and fruit – these foods are low in fat and high in fibre, vita-mins and minerals.

Make fibre your best friend – Fibre helps you feel full which can control your appetite.

Choose whole grain bread, whole wheat pasta, brown rice, high fibre cereal, beans, whole vegetables and fruits.

Watch your portions – Follow the plate method:

Make ½ of your plate vegetables (at least two kinds)

¼ of your plate for starch (rice, potato, bread, pasta) the size of your fist

¼ of your plate for protein (meat, fish, chicken, tofu) the size of a deck of cards

Eat less fat – choose lean meats, low fat dairy and healthy cooking techniques (broil-ing, boiling or baking).

Eat breakfast everyday – helps jump start your brain and your metabolism and

increases your energy.Don’t skip meals – may cause overeat-

ing at your next meal. It is essential to have three meals a day no more than 4-6 hours apart to keep your metabolism going and provide energy.

Limit refined sugars and fast food – these foods are high in sugar, fat, salt and “empty calories.”

Drink water - drink 6-8 cups of water every day. Avoid fruit juice. “Unsweetened” juice has natural sugar.

Exercise – 30 minutes most days of the week.

Following a healthy lifestyle is best for a healthy maintainable weight loss. A healthy weight loss is gradual (1-2 lbs per week). Remember, if a fad diet sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Talk with a registered dietician to plan out healthy food choices that will work for you and your lifestyle. The new STARS heli-pad at the Pine Falls Hospital avoids local ground transportation, instances of double

handling some patients and provides for direct site access to the Pine Falls hospital as opposed to the old STARS Heli-pad located at the Manitoba Conservation office near the Powerview Hydro Dam.

The key benefits of STARS Manitoba include providing sophostocated life-saving care with an experienced critical care nurse and advanced care paramedic on every flight, speed of the helicopter which flies at approximately 230 km/hr and the ability to land and receive patients directly at rural hospitals or at the scene of emergencies. Scene landings often occur on highways and difficult to access locations that are not accessible to ground ambulances. Accord-ing to Cam Heke, Communications Lead for Manitoba STARS, “the new helipad will save 20 minutes in overall response times with

an approximately 27-minute direct flight to the rooftop helipad at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg.” Pilot operator Jason Johnson and flight nurse Alan Mart empha-sized how important every minute is in their work for saving lives. STARS is a non-profit organization that does not charge patients for emergency and paramedic services. Trau-matic injury related responses often involve motor vehicle collisions, and a wide variety of other emergencies such as serious burn injuries, falls, industry accidents, assaults, snowmobile accidents, ATV accidents, and many others. Medical emergencies often involve such things as heart attacks, strokes, serious respiratory illnesses, and pregnancy related emergencies. STARS also has emer-gency Transport Physicians on-call 24-7 to either fly with the crew when needed, or to provide real-time over the phone coordina-tion of care.

Yoga is self love.

Whoa. Self love? I thought it was about being flexible and strong. I thought it was about getting into

funny positions and chanting Ommmmmm. What is self love anyway?

Every one of us is here for a reason, for a purpose. We are here to grow, to learn, to expand. We are here to be our awesome selves and to bring our unique gifts and tal-ents to the world. That can sound like a lot of pressure. So how do we show up as our best selves in the world? How do we learn to love and accept ourselves just as we are when society is constantly telling us that we aren’t good enough?

Yoga is a great tool to start that journey of self discovery.

The beauty of yoga is that it takes you exactly where you are today. You don’t

have to be in any sort of shape, have any experience with physical activity, or look a certain way. You simply have to show up on your mat, ready to get to know yourself on a deeper level.

Yoga is a personal practice. In all classes, practitioners are instructed on how to modi-fy each posture for their body. Every student looks different in their expression of a pose and each student is learning something unique about themselves as that pose brings up thoughts and reactions. Each student is on their own journey of self discovery as the energy of the group offers support and encouragement, a safe space to open up and reflect.

Yoga is a practice that encompasses body, mind and soul. When you show up on your mat, the practice starts with grounding, with letting go of your day and taking a moment to connect back to your self. Next, you move through a set of physical postures designed

Coverto open you up and reveal the thoughts and emotions you have been holding on to that no longer serve you. This gives you the op-portunity to release your old habits of think-ing and feeling to move forward as a more raw and clear expression of your true self.

Depending on the style of yoga, the postures will challenge you physically and mentally in a different way. In a yin yoga practice, for example, you will hold a relax-ing pose for three to five minutes which will challenge you to stay present in the moment and to observe your physical and emotional reactions to the posture. Yin yoga is a medi-tative and therapeutic style of yoga designed for release and recovery. In a vinyasa yoga class, you will be moving dynamically and will be challenged to try new things, to get out of your comfort zone and to examine your physical and emotional reactions to the demands of the practice. Every yoga practice,

no matter what style, ends in shavasana (corpse pose) where you lay down in medita-tion to absorb the teachings of the practice.

Yoga means connection. It is a beautiful practice that welcomes everyone, no mat-ter what kind of body they are living in, to connect to themselves, to each other and to source. Yoga is more than just a physi-cal exercise. Yoga is a deep unravelling of the layers you have built around your heart to reveal the love and perfection that has always been there, the awesome light that is, and always has been, your true nature. Yoga is coming home to yourself.

Have you considered massage therapy to help you recover from an injury, old or new? To increase your ability

to perform your daily activities? To help improve your state of wellbeing?

Will it help you? Well, it depends… It depends on many factors including your age, the age of the injury, the type and extent of the injury, your general fitness and activity level, the quality of the nutrients you intake, including air and water, and it depends on the skill level of the therapist.

A workshop, “Traumatic Scar Tissue Man-agement” was presented by Nancy Keeney

Smith and Catherine Ryan at the annual MTAM Conference (Massage Therapist’s As-sociation of Manitoba). Nancy and Catherine are full time massage therapists who have worked many years on their client’s injuries, have spent many hours training, many days attending and presenting at national and international conferences on this topic and related topics and many hours studying the related research. Together they have written a book and have put together a workshop for RMTs and other hands-on manual therapists. It is a great opportunity to incorporate the latest research into the work in such a timely

Massage Therapy for Scar Tissue and Trauma? It Depends!

manner. Few professions are able to do this, and do it with the skills they already possess!

“Less is more”, “the skin is the way in”, and “It depends” were three comments often used by the instructors. One of the main premises of the training is that many injuries have not recovered in a timely fashion due to the constrictions in the tissues. They may be caused by tension in the muscles, crushing injuries, over action of the bodies injury response, lack of movement in the area and other factors. This may prevent the healthy flow of the nutrients coming in and the debris moving out. The gentle, very gentle, compression of the tissues in the af-fected areas can often help especially when combined with gentle, very gentle, massage techniques that clear the path, to help move the debris out to the lymph system. Thus, an injury may be caused to begin its recovery. Case in point: a volunteer was brought in to provide a demonstration of the techniques. He had a major injury to his hand 3 years ago, was treated with surgery and physio-

therapy at the time and was still unable to close his thumb and first finger together, (think opposable thumb). He thought that this was as good as it was going to get and adapted by using his second finger to do the pinching action so necessary to his job and daily activities. 15 minutes of treatment and he could close that gap! Another 15 minutes and he could manipulate his thumb and fin-gers in very close to normal movement. Will this kind of success come to anyone with an injury? It depends! Suffice to say there are never any guarantees, but it is worth the attempt to try and help improve the chances of recovery.

People with injuries such as burns, direct trauma, fractures, surgical scars (elective and interventions), repetitive strains and more may benefit from this work. How many treatments will it take?
