BRINGING THE Y YMCA YOUTH & FAMILY SERVICES
2015 ANNUAL REPORT
WE KEEP BRINGING IT!
WE BRING THE Y to diverse communities in the area. Through community
partnerships we bring community centers into low income apartment complexes,
bring free afterschool programs to schools, bring adult role models into youths
lives bring case managers and therapists into the neighborhoods, and bring free
childcare for much of our community workshops and programs. WE ELIMINATE
THE BARRIERS of transportation, lack of child supervision, and insufficient funds.
In 2015, YMCA Youth & Family Services (YFS) impacted over 3,200 lives
through programs that promoted Youth Development, Healthy Living, and
Social Responsibility. The branch celebrated 11 years of bringing critical
services to primarily low income and ethnic minority youth and families. Our
clients’ lives are typically entangled with adverse childhood experiences
(ACEs) like abuse, neglect, divorce, incarceration, addictions, mental illness,
etc. YFS brings an innovative community needs assessment approach to
the people we serve. We bring the Y to them!
YFS 2015 Annual Report
As the new county provider for Wraparound services,
the Y brings coordinated care services to over 30 youth
to prevent lawful removal from their homes.
100% of youth in the Wraparound program were
diverted from activity within the juvenile justice
system in 2015!
Microsoft became a valued partner of the
Y by focusing on teaching video game
coding to the youth in the Northwest Park
community of Silver Spring. This will provide
skills they can use as entrepreneurs and in
the workforce.
BRINGING YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
We built healthy emotional attachment between parents and kids through play by offering the Y’s
Play Academy to the Carroll Avenue and Quebec Terrace Community. Over 25 children, parents, and grandparents came together to discover play as a family!
YFS 2015 Annual Report
The Y partnered with Maryland Multicultural Youth Center (MMYC) in an innovative group male mentoring program to Latino and African American young men in the Northwest Park Community of Silver Spring. In this program high school age and young adult men of the Conservation Corps mentor middle school young men.
92% of the youth who attended the Y’s Benchmarks afterschool
program 75% of the time or more received an A, B, or C in Science at school.
BRINGING YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
The Y’s Youth Links mentoring program brings 79 invested
adult role models into the lives of youth. Many of these youth
are involved in the juvenile and child welfare system.
Through the Y, in 2015 300 young people received mental
health therapy and counseling
services by licensed therapist.
For the first time, Healthy Kids Day came to the Rosemary Hills community. Families engaged in field games, dance workouts, health screenings, and healthy food.
The Y brought Healthy Eating and
Physical Activity (HEPA) to over 400
youth in after school programs with
healthy snacks, new physical activities and
even Smoothie Day for some. We made
sure no kid left program hungry.
