YMCA Calgary had another exciting year in 2012. As Chair of the Board of directors, and president and Ceo, we have the privilege of being involved in a variety of ways with initiatives and projects.

the year began with the grand opening of the Saddletowne YMCA in the genesis Centre of Community wellness in northeast Calgary. this amazing complex is home to more than 5,000 YMCA members, countless drop-in users, the north east Centre of Community Society soccer fields and recreation spaces, visitors to the Calgary public library, and the accessible community space of 1000 voices. this facility is becoming a true gathering place for community members, and we are proud to be a partner.

the fourth quarter of 2012 began with the opening of the YMCA in South health Campus. this state of the art health campus provides the YMCA, u of C, and Alberta health Services with unique opportunities to come together in the wellness Centre to meet community needs, campus staff needs, as well as patient needs. this vision focuses on holistic health and wellness, and we continue to explore the myriad of ways the YMCA fits in the continuum of patient care and community wellness.

in between these two openings, the association continued to serve its many members, program participants, and drop-in users. thanks to our generous donors, we raised over $1.4M in our Strong Kids Campaign to support more than 15,000 children and youth learn and grow at YMCA—15,000 who otherwise could not afford to be at the YMCA. we are proud to be able to contribute to the health and well-being of our children and youth.

our strategic planning task force embarked upon a process to create a vision that will guide our work over the next 10 years. the vision is that

“our communities are healthy and vibrant because children, youth, and adults belong, grow, thrive, and lead”.

we look forward to the next phase of work that tasks us to understand community needs, provide services to meet those needs, and work with partners and stakeholders to build healthy communities.

we hope you enjoy the next few pages that tell some of our YMCA stories.

we invite You to Begin Your own health and wellness Journey

My YMCA journey started three years ago when i was learning to adapt to being a new single mom to my daughters, taylor and Brooklyn, and coping with the recent diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS), all at the age of 26. i stumbled across a “ free art “ program at the YMCA close to our home and immediately registered my girls—i wanted to get their minds off the change of life we were experiencing. the Art-reach program allows them to be creative and gives them a way to express their feelings through art. Most of all, they are able to make new friends. YMCA staff have watched taylor and Brooklyn develop into fine young ladies, and helped them overcome struggle and disappointment. As a single mom on a sole income, i was worried about what kind of summer i was going to be able to provide for them last year. when bills keep coming, sometimes there isn’t much left at the end of a regular month, let alone summer holidays. i was overwhelmed with joy when my girls were offered the opportunity to attend Camp Chief hector YMCA through YMCA Strong Kids funding. i watched my special needs daughter taylor, grow from her camp experience. She has become more independent and more confident about herself. this was a place for her to fit in and be a kid, without people picking on her. taylor has since kept

that confidence. She is the first to approach a group of kids and make friends, the first to offer a helping hand and she holds her head up higher now. Brooklyn has had a lot of responsibilities since we became a single-income family with her sister being special needs, and me having MS. Camp Chief hector YMCA was a place where she could go and just be a nine-year-old regular kid. Brooklyn gained more confidence and more compassion, and she was able to be a kid with no responsibilities for a week. the YMCA experience has changed our family forever in so many ways. we have re-evaluated what family means. we understand each other better and have more patience with each other. the YMCA has brought me and my kids closer and has made us stronger. the YMCA staff have become my friends and the YMCA is our family too.

in december 2012, Kuldip stood tall in front of his YMCA language instruction for newcomers to Canada (linC) class at the Shawnessy YMCA and received his three year longevity award. this was a proud moment for Kuldip to show fellow classmates how much he had grown. Kuldip arrived in Canada five years ago seeking a new home and better life for his family. Although he had gained employment, something was missing. A friend mentioned the YMCA was a great place to work. After a successful interview, Kuldip began his career in the housekeeping department of the YMCA Asset Management team and never looked back. when Kuldip first moved to Canada, he understood very little english and expressed feeling inadequate when he heard young children speaking fluently. in April 2012, he took a very important step in his personal growth by starting linC classes at the Shawnessy YMCA. gradually his confidence and ability to communicate in english grew. his YMCA linC teacher noticed such a huge improvement in Kuldip’s english that she moved him to a higher level class in a short amount of time. Kuldip resides in northeast Calgary and travels to the Shawnessy YMCA every weekday working

40 hours per week and attending linC classes 12 hours per week. despite 11-hour days and a long commute, Kuldip loves every moment of it. Since beginning his YMCA journey, Kuldip talks about the many friendships he has made, the unwavering support from staff, volunteers and members and is grateful that he can provide his family with a good life in Canada. when asked why he doesn’t work and attend linC at the Saddletowne YMCA which is very close to his home, he states, “the people at the Shawnessy YMCA are like my family. i have so much support here. i find value coming to the YMCA and i feel this is my second home.” Kuldip has come a long way since arriving in Canada. his personal growth and sense of achievement is evident in the glowing smile he wears each day.

My name is Carolina del pilar hernandez vargas. i am 20 years old, and i’d like to share with you how YMCA Calgary has helped me to find the voice that i lost when i first came to Canada. i am originally from Colombia, and i have been living in Canada for just over three years. i moved to Calgary with my family, but because of language barriers and cultural differences, we found it very difficult at first. My experience of being a youth from an immigrant background in Canada has been difficult at times. when i first came to Calgary it was hard for me to communicate. i felt like a nobody in my new home and did not want to care about anything. one day i heard about a YMCA program in my school, a program called YMAp, for immigrant youth. i was so scared but the coordinator was very nice and made me feel welcome. My adjustment period wasn’t easy, but with the support of my family and the YMCA Coordinator, i was able to find my internal strength. Being involved with YMCA Calgary has given me so many opportunities. i feel proud of myself because, now, i’m the one helping young people and immigrants find their voice.

i have been a Youth Ambassador for the Canadian Council for refugees, and traveled to Montreal for a national refugee Youth gathering. i also helped create a workshop to help immigrants talk about their experiences in education. At YMCA Calgary, i gained confidence in myself and my abilities. i graduated from YMAp last year and have been working and volunteering with YMCA Calgary ever since. recently, YMCA Calgary invited me to read the proclamation during the YMCA world peace week. i am currently working in the Kids Club program at an elementary school and with Community outreach. Sometime in the future, i would like to become a social worker that works with immigrants and refugees. YMCA Calgary staff helped me realize that i wasn’t isolated or lost, and inspired me to help others. i will always be glad for what the future will give me because i know it is going to be splendid, and that i will never be alone again. now my family is bigger than ever… my family is the YMCA.

in 1999 at 48 years-of-age, rita gore was in the best shape of her life when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. After a lumpectomy, surgery and radiation, she wondered when she could begin doing weights again. it was a time before the benefits of exercise for women with breast cancer were known and the doctor told her that her arm would never be the same. gore said, “initially i felt fragile and worried whether i would be able to ever exercise like i used to.” YMCA connections and initiatives helped her find confidence, strength and motivation to become well again. gore joined Sistership dragon Boat racing team which trains at the eau Claire YMCA. the strength and conviction shown by fellow teammates paired with encouragement and good instruction from YMCA staff, helped her to gain skills and confidence. “Both organizations have allowed me to find my inner warrior and not let one doctor’s comment prevent me from safely resuming exercise ,” gore stated. Another opportunity came when CBC partnered with the YMCA to offer the live right now initiative. it was based on the idea that small steps can help people remain active. gore felt right at home and a strong connection to YMCA grew. gore appreciated that everyone is welcome at the YMCA regardless of socioeconomic circumstances.

it was a perfect fit with her personal values. She wanted to give back and discovered volunteer opportunities. She fundraised for the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign to help children who cannot afford the cost of programs or membership and acted as course marshal for YMCA Camp Chief hector’s Family Fun run. these days, gore has settled into a nice routine. She walks to the eau Claire YMCA because it provides peaceful time to reflect. At the YMCA, she enjoys a workout that includes the elliptical, weight lifting, cycling, rowing and stretching. now she encourages others to adopt a healthy and active lifestyle. incorporating writing skills and her passion for exercise, she writes about health and wellness topics for the YMCA and various publications. with the support of the YMCA her journey has come full circle and extends well beyond into the community. her advice to others? “Be open to trying new things and find a way to start. You don’t have to be an elite athlete. get help to develop a routine and know that you can be your own superstar.” gore has truly found a place to belong, an ideal environment to learn and grow, the support to thrive, and opportunities to lead others to find a path to health and wellness.

proactively addressing community needs for health and wellness,

Saddletowne YMCA opened in January 2012 as part of the genesis Centre of Community wellness, located near Saddletowne Circle, between the communities of taradale, Martindale and Saddle ridge.

“ “

Training with Gopal has made a positive change in my daily life. Before, I needed assistance and crutches to walk. With his continuous help and guidance I learned to use my lower body muscles and can now walk freely and independently. YMCA people inspire me to do my best and keep persevering. They truly make me feel like I am part of a community. ~ Eric Mariano

we were thrilled to introduce two locations to the YMCA family in 2012

After years of careful planning, YMCA Calgary opened a location within the South health Campus that borders Auburn Bay. this partnership connects hospital care with community services—like the YMCA.

“ “

Through the partnership with Alberta Health Services at South Health Campus, we provide a holistic and integrated wellness experience to anyone who walks through our doors. We have the opportunity to develop innovative approaches to building healthy communities.
