I referred in my last column tothe sadness, which still pervadesour Wantima workplace with theloss of Ron Halstead. It has been

underlined for us as we processthis great gift to Jazz History ofhis vast collection

We have had a very useful visitfrom Barbara Prosser-POWell, theArts Coordinator of the KnoxCouncil. As a result of thesediscussions we have subinttted a

request for financial assistancefrom the Council. I have also

agreed to serve as a member of agroup to conduct a cultoral auditof the city. We have some hopesof benefit from closer association

with our local authority. We arethe only state-wide cultural bodylocated in the municipality

the University of MeIboumeMuseum of Art. Robyn came tosee the Archive and to advise us

Financially we still have ourheads above water, but barelyRon Halstead' s wonderful

bequest of $20,000.00, whenadded to Dane Elisabeth's and

the retained life subscriptionsmakes OUT cash managemaitcapital $52,000; his yields about$2,500. We now have 150members at $22.00 each. It costs

about $8,000 a year to operate thearchive and our total income has

so far just made it year

FRIENDS OF THE ARCHIVE

As noted in previous issues ofVJAZZ the Archive has a Friends

program where volunteers spendone day a month at Waritima,escorting visitors trough thevarious sections of the Archive

This has bean very successful, butwe are in need of more volunteers

Tony Lambides was one of thefirst to volunteer for the Friends

program and is now in charge ofour overseas collection of sound

recordriigs. Tony has done awonderful job of sorting andcataloguing the hundreds ofrecordriigs that have come to theArchive mainly bequestcorrections and is a marvellousresearch resource
