WHERE HAS MY WATER BEEN?

Page 3: YES! Use your entrance ticket to answer the following questions………. How is it possible that the water in our bottles has been around for millions

COULD MY WATER HAVE BEEN DRUNK BY…..

Page 4: YES! Use your entrance ticket to answer the following questions………. How is it possible that the water in our bottles has been around for millions

YES!

Page 6: YES! Use your entrance ticket to answer the following questions………. How is it possible that the water in our bottles has been around for millions

Use your entrance ticket to answer the following questions……….

How is it possible that the water in our bottles has been around for millions of years (even before dinosaurs)?

What happens to rain water and water from lakes and rivers?

After answering both questions, put your entrance ticket in your science folder.

Page 7: YES! Use your entrance ticket to answer the following questions………. How is it possible that the water in our bottles has been around for millions

RAISE YOUR HAND TO TELL MEHOW IS IT POSSIBLE?

For your water to have been to….

and

For your water to have been drunk by….

Page 8: YES! Use your entrance ticket to answer the following questions………. How is it possible that the water in our bottles has been around for millions

What is a cycle?

Page 9: YES! Use your entrance ticket to answer the following questions………. How is it possible that the water in our bottles has been around for millions

A cycle is……

• a series of steps• a process• things working together to make something

happen

Page 10: YES! Use your entrance ticket to answer the following questions………. How is it possible that the water in our bottles has been around for millions

Talk about it with your group……

What are some cycles you know?

Page 11: YES! Use your entrance ticket to answer the following questions………. How is it possible that the water in our bottles has been around for millions

Cycles

Page 12: YES! Use your entrance ticket to answer the following questions………. How is it possible that the water in our bottles has been around for millions

So…….

Why is it possible that a stinky skunk could have drunk my water too?

Page 14: YES! Use your entrance ticket to answer the following questions………. How is it possible that the water in our bottles has been around for millions

The Amount of Water on the Earth Never Changes!!!It’s the same water drank by dinosaurs, cavemen and even skunks!

Water just keeps going through the same cycle over and over again The earth doesn’t ever get any new water!

The water cycle includes the following steps:

1. EVAPORATION

2. CONDENSATION

3. PRECIPITATION

4. RUNOFF

During Today’s Lab…………………….

You will be focusing on what happens during the water cycle.

Page 16: YES! Use your entrance ticket to answer the following questions………. How is it possible that the water in our bottles has been around for millions

ProblemWhat happens to rain water and

water from lakes and rivers?

Page 17: YES! Use your entrance ticket to answer the following questions………. How is it possible that the water in our bottles has been around for millions

Research

You will be using the laptops to work together in your groups to investigate the water cycle and What happens to rain water and water from lakes and rivers?

Page 18: YES! Use your entrance ticket to answer the following questions………. How is it possible that the water in our bottles has been around for millions

ExperimentWe will be adding a hydrosphere to the “biospheres” we have created. Then, we will be adding two types of water: room temperature water and warm water.

Page 19: YES! Use your entrance ticket to answer the following questions………. How is it possible that the water in our bottles has been around for millions

Hypothesis

Hypothesize what will happen in each of our biospheres.

Page 20: YES! Use your entrance ticket to answer the following questions………. How is it possible that the water in our bottles has been around for millions

Data Observe what happens in each of our biospheres

and

record your results in the data section of your packet.

Page 21: YES! Use your entrance ticket to answer the following questions………. How is it possible that the water in our bottles has been around for millions

Conclusion

Develop a conclusion that tells what happened in your experiment and why your hypotheses is or is not correct.

WHAT QUESTIONS DOES YOUR GROUP HAVE

about the water cycle?

and

About today’s problem:

What happens to rain water and water from lakes and rivers?

Brainstorm questions with your group and add them to your research questions in your packet

Instructions for Research

• Work together to answer all required questions in the research section of your packet

• Use the 3 required links on our homepage when your begin your research

• Work together to problem solve and find the information. Make sure everyone in your group is participating

• Record what you find in your packet

Page 24: YES! Use your entrance ticket to answer the following questions………. How is it possible that the water in our bottles has been around for millions

Write Your HypothesesMake sure your Hypotheses relate to your research and today’s lesson

• What will happen inside your biosphere when room temperature water is added?

If__________________,then______________. • What will happen inside your biosphere when hot

water is added?

If_______________, then_________________.

Experiment1. Let Mrs. Roffo know you are ready for the experiment.

2. Students will fill the bowl inside their 1st biosphere with room temp water.

3. Students will seal the container with plastic wrap and place it on the towel.

4. To ensure safety, Mrs. Roffo will fill the bowl inside the 2nd biosphere with heated water. Do not leave your group or come near the sink!

5. Mrs. Roffo will seal the container and put the container on a towel in the center of each group.

6. Observe your biospheres for 5-10 minutes. Record your observations in your data.

Make sure your data is valid! Do not touch or move the biospheres!

Page 26: YES! Use your entrance ticket to answer the following questions………. How is it possible that the water in our bottles has been around for millions

Data• Observe your biosphere for 5-10 minutes.

• Write about what you see happening in each of your biospheres.

• Draw pictures that show what is happening in each of your biospheres.

Page 27: YES! Use your entrance ticket to answer the following questions………. How is it possible that the water in our bottles has been around for millions

ConclusionWrite a Paragraph

• Use the words and pictures from your data to write a paragraph that explains what happened in each of the containers. Tell why you got the results you did for each container.

• Answer the question: “Were my hypotheses correct, and why or why not?”

• Answer the essential question: What happens to rain water and water from lakes and rivers?

Page 28: YES! Use your entrance ticket to answer the following questions………. How is it possible that the water in our bottles has been around for millions

Lesson Closure• 1 person from each group will explain what they

have seen in their biospheres. • Answer the following questions on your exit ticket:– How is it possible that the water from our bottles has

been around for millions of years (even before dinosaurs)?

– What happens to rain water and water from lakes and rivers?

• Hand your entrance/exit ticket in • Keep your lab packet in your Science folder for

tomorrow’s lesson
