    Exercise Number 3 (Spelling)

The following extract is adapted from Conrads Heart of Darkness: A Critical &Contextual Discussion by Cedrid Watts (1977). There are 22 spelling mistakes in(our version of) the text, try to find them (notice that some of the spellingmistakes are repeated several times):

    Spelling

When the tale was first published, as a serial in Blackwoods Magazine in 1899,the tittle was The Heart of Darkness. Obviously enough, the tittle-frase canmean the centre of a dark (= sinister, evil, corrupt, malevolent, misteriousor oscure) region. But because of the ambiguity of the word of, the frasecan also mean the heart wich has the quality of darkness, suggesting a humanbeing whith a dark (= sinister, evil, corrupt, malevolent, misterious oroscure) inner nature. The presence of The in the original tittle appears totilt the balance, so that most readers woud probably have sensed at once theformer meaning and overlooked (until they were well embarked on the narrative)the later. However, for the ensuing publication in book form, Conrad delettedThe; and by thus making the gramatical format of the frase resemble that ofsuch frases as man of straw or hearts of oak, he gave an equipoise ofambiguity to the tittle. The very equipoise is functionaly valuable, holding usbrefly in dout as we begin the tale, and appropriatly heralding some of theduplicities of affect to come.
