Federalists American political party founded in the 1790’s by Alexander Hamilton. They supported a federal government with a lot of power with a national bank to pay for the war.

Jeffersonian/Democratic-Republicans American political party founded in the early 1790s by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Named after Thomas Jefferson, and is the political idea supporting a federal government with limited powers and advocating a strict interpretation of the U.S. Constitution.

THOMAS JEFFERSON

•April 13, 1743– July 4, 1826•A Founding Father•Author of the Declaration of Independence•President of the United States from 1801 to 1809•Co-founder and leader of the Democratic- Republican Party•Created the Jeffersonian Democracy, a political idea supporting a national government, but with greatly limited powers. •He advocated for a strict interpretation of the U.S. Constitution so the national government couldn’t get too powerful. •He wanted the states to be able to decide for their own people, not the federal government in Washington.

CHARLES PINCKNEY

•October 26, 1757 – October 29, 1824•Author of the Pinckney Draft 1787 which was the basis for the Constitution of the United States.•Changed his political views to include the common man•Became a supporter of Thomas Jefferson and supported Jefferson for President. •Government should have 3 parts: President, Congress and the Supreme Court.•Favored individual religious freedom and protection from government authorities.•Favored states' rights and a limited federal government
