2018 NWTRPA & YOUTH CENTRES CONFERENCE YELLOWKNIFE, NT • EXPLORER HOTEL • OCTOBER 23-25, 2018

The NWT’s premiere training gathering for recreation leaders, health care staff, students, youth, Elders, youth centre staff, and volunteers.

Intergenerational Connections

Page 2: YELLOWKNIFE, NT • EXPLORER HOTEL • OCTOBER 23-25, …static.nwtrpa.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/...will bring together the Elders in Motion, On the Land, Recreation Leadership,

The NWTRPA and Youth Centres Conference is an opportunity for recreation leaders, health care staff, students, youth, Elders, youth centre staff, and volunteers from across the territory to explore trends and issues in recreation and receive training in four specific areas: Recreation Leadership, Elders in Motion, On the Land programs, and Youth Centres.Last year’s conference programme was inspired by the NWTRPA’s 2016 commitment to take action on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. We sought out speakers who could help us better understand the historical and ongoing relationship between colonialism and recreation. We also invited presenters to inspire our thinking on the role of recreation in unlearning colonialism and nurturing vibrant Indigenous communities. Decolonization remains a priority for the NWTRPA, as well as for this year’s conference.

Residential schools were created to break connections between Indigenous children and their families, territories, and languages. One of the ways that we can promote healing and cultivate strong communities is to repair and strengthen these relations. At the 2018 NWTRPA and Youth Centres Conference, we will focus our attention on strengthening relations between the generations.

How can recreation create opportunities for people at different stages in their life to spend time together and, ultimately, to learn from one another? What are the benefits of intergenerational programming for individuals, families, and communities? What are the challenges posed by intergenerational programs and how might we address them?

You will notice some changes to our conference layout. Following on this year’s theme of Intergenerational Connections, we have more plenaries than ever before. These plenaries will bring together the Elders in Motion, On the Land, Recreation Leadership, and Youth Centres streams, creating opportunities for cross-stream discussions about the possibilities and challenges of intergenerational programming. We will also have opportunities for stream-specific discussions during the speed dating and breakout sessions.

We hope that the 2018 conference is a space of learning, growth, and connection for you.

Thank you for joining us this year.

Sincerely, The Conference Committee

Dear Members,

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Qaggiavuut!ᖃᒡᒋᐊᕘᑦ!

QAGGIAVUUT!Qaggiavuut! is an organization that promotes the preservation and maintenance of Inuit culture and language through the performing arts. Through their work with youth and Elders Quaggiavuut! created the organization’s newest project, Kiviuq Returns Youth. This one-hour interdisciplinary performance brings together traditional and contemporary music, Inuit drum dance, throat music, and Elder storytelling in a contemporary retelling of one man’s legendary heroism and sorrows through the ages. The Elders are of the last remaining generation of Inuit that lived their lives traditionally on the land. They had first heard the stories as children in iglus, sealskin tents, and sod houses listening to their own Elders. Through Kiviuq Returns Youth, they continue the oral tradition of the legends of Kiviuq. Presenting on behalf of Qaggiavuut! are Christine Tootoo and Ellen Hamilton. Christine is an actor, performer, and throat singer based out of Rankin Inlet, NU. She wields an impressive resume, with credits on circumpolar and national stages, the latest as part of the Kiviuq Returns ensemble cast. Ellen Hamilton is the Executive Director of Qaggiavuut!, as well as a filmmaker, actor, and musician based out of Iqaluit, NT.

BOUNCE BACK LEAGUE Bounce Back League (BBL) is a program for 8-12 year olds that takes the best part of sport (e.g. drills, fun competition, leagues, tournaments) and the power of being part of a team and uses it to equip kids to better handle the ups and downs of life. This program is designed around “trauma-informed practice,” which takes the most cutting edge and effective approaches from both the clinical and academic realms of childhood trauma and healing and adapts these approaches to fit into Boys and Girls Club organizations and culture. Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada is a national child-and-youth-serving organization that provides safe, supportive places where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships, and develop confidence and skills for life. They have 700 club service locations in rural, urban, and remote

communities across the country where they welcome over 200,000 children and youth each year. Clubs offer programming and support services to meet the needs of their local communities. Presenting on behalf of BBL are Maren Rojas and Bruce Scott.

DID YOU KNOW that only NWTRPA members can attend the Conference as regular registrants? This is because, as well as being an educational event for recreation leaders, the Conference is a chance for the NWTRPA to connect with its members - Don’t worry, if you’re not already a member or your membership has expired, you can sign up or renew by going to members.nwtrpa.org.

What does it mean to be member of the NWTRPA? It means gaining access to tools and resources created especially to help you in your work. Many of these tools and resources, such as the rec leader directory and training tracking, are available through the NWTRPA Member Portal, which also happens to host the Conference registration.

A note on NWTRPA membership

Being a member also means gaining the power of the collective voices of recreation leaders in the NWT. The NWTRPA is the primary advocate for recreation in the NWT, promoting the issues that are important to you. As a member, you decide what those issues are by electing new Directors to the Board and voting for policy changes at the Annual General Meeting.

More than anything, being a member means helping to build a stronger community of recreation leaders in the territory. If you have questions about NWTRPA Membership or something else, email [email protected] or call (867) 669-8375.

Join us at the NWTRPA AGM Thursday, October

25th at 10:45AM. Members will learn about what the

NWTRPA achieved over the last year, elect new board members, and vote

on association business. If you would like to nominate yourself or someone

else for an open position on the NWTRPA Board of Directors, contact [email protected].

Nominations must be received by October 24th at 5PM
