TRANSCRIPT

Many items that we find in our bathroom are packaged in or made from plastic. However due to their small size and other limitations they cannot be recycled via your yellow bin and need to be disposed of in the red bin. These include:• dental floss, lipsticks,

eyeshadow packs, medicine blister packs

• any product that comes in a plastic tube such as toothpaste and sunscreen

• disposable items such as razors, cotton buds and toothbrushes.

There are companies that may recycle some of the above mentioned items. Seek them out on the internet starting with planetark.org

Plastic in the bathroom

What happens to your Kerbside Recycling & Waste

Tricky items. Can these be recycled?

• Recyclable material is sorted and separated then distributed to various recycling facilities across the country and overseas.

• Recycling avoids precious resources going to landfill and reduces pressure on diminishing natural materials.

Meat TraysMeat trays commonly found in supermarkets are either polystyrene or hard plastic.

Polystyrene (foam) food containers cannot be recycled and must go in the red bin. (They usually can be torn, or can crack when folded).

Hard plastic Not all hard plastic meat trays are the same!Manufacturers use different processes in the production of meat trays resulting in some trays not being recyclable. The Australasian Recycling Label is gradually introducing their labeling system on a range of grocery items including meat trays.

LANDFILL The Red Bin• The waste material collected from every

red bin in the Shoalhaven is sent to the West Nowra Recycling and Waste Depot and deposited directly into landfill.

• Over 28,000 tonnes of household waste ends up here annually.

• There is no sorting or recovery of materials presented in the red bin loads. When recyclables end up in landfill, those precious resources are lost.

RECYCLING The Yellow Bin

If the tray has this symbol it can go in your

yellow recycling bin.

If the tray has this symbol it must go in your red landfill bin.

Look for the ‘Redcycle’ bins. Visit redcycle.net.au for a list of items classified as soft plastic.
