Low Moisture Block Management Tips

While blocks can free the owner from daily supplement delivery tasks, they do not eliminate the need for feeding management. Successful use hinges on proper placement, maintenance, and monitoring.

• Provide adequate available roughage and energy at all times. Do not feed free choice to empty, energy starved horses.

• Provide unlimited fresh, clean water. Once horses are familiar with block, place block away from water supply and away from where animals congregate.

• Place one -125# or 200# block to every 5-7 head of horses and one- 60# block to every 2 to 4 head of horses. The amount of surface area to the number of horses is important.

• In areas with extreme heat, place blocks in the shade.

• Intake of these supplements will vary, depending on the quality of forages, pasture conditions and/or nutritional need.
