1. Golden Age- Ideal time period or best time in the life of one person or a group of people because in the person’s view, the period in question was or is the “best”. Everything and anything encountered by more than one person has a golden age.

After the war, the superhero genre lost steam, marking what many consider to be the end of the Golden Age.

Example: Golden Age of Comics

The Golden Age of Comic Books describes an era of American comic books, from the late 1930s to the early 1950s. During this time, modern comic books were first published and rapidly increased in popularity.

Long Term Hatred- Series of events from the past that contribute to one group hating another.

Page 7: Yearly Themes. Task: Use guide sheet to complete the items on the slides

Cycle of Hate-Two or more groups caught in a constant back and forth reactionary series of actions. Similar to Long Term Hatred but the difference is:

Long Term Hatred is about the events that

occur. The starting point of tension.

The cycle is about the act and react series of events.

Task: Come up with a comparable group experiencing such tension.

4. Strict Interpretation-How one interprets and applies a written document like a religious book, constitution or any document. Strict interpretation means the reader applies the text of the document as is or follows the document requests as is. There is no deviating from the text in question. Loose interpreters try to find loopholes in the text simply because the text does not include the written language.

Another ExampleOld Testament

You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination. (NKJ, Leviticus 18:22)

If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them. (NKJ, Leviticus 20:13)

How would you respond if:

1. The person next to you slapped you in the face.

Page 11: Yearly Themes. Task: Use guide sheet to complete the items on the slides

5. Slap Back Thesis-Responding to one’s acts of violence direct at you in a similarly violent manner.

HarlemBY LANGSTON HUGHESWhat happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore— And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over— like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?

Page 13: Yearly Themes. Task: Use guide sheet to complete the items on the slides

Ideology:Republicans have a collection of idea about

running a government. So do Democrats. The West Coast Offense is a strategy used in

football.

Page 14: Yearly Themes. Task: Use guide sheet to complete the items on the slides

7. Left Moderates and Right-Within the various ideologies exist people who choose to follow the ideology as is because the ideology is all that matters and is set in stone.

Left wants change or is

willing to budgeKeep things the

way they are

Moderates: Tend to vary left and right on certain

topics/issues

Gauge Yourself

1. Homosexuals in America should be allowed to get married, run for office openly gay and kiss their partners in public without fear or legal challenges.

2. Baseball should be changed to 3 innings that allow every player and the coach a change to bat.

3. Balut should be as American as apple pie.

Page 15: Yearly Themes. Task: Use guide sheet to complete the items on the slides

BalutIf you said yuck you have just offended my culture.

Page 16: Yearly Themes. Task: Use guide sheet to complete the items on the slides

8. American Exceptionalism-The idea that America is a beacon of light for humanity and has a responsibility to guide the human race. This thinking is based on the assumption that America is good for humanity. What

is the reverse thinking?

Engaging in “goodness”

Task: Come up with two Examples

And

How would you dispose of Bin Laden’s body?

What makes the following exceptional?

Hiroshima

Page 18: Yearly Themes. Task: Use guide sheet to complete the items on the slides

The Death of Bin LadenWhile the U.S. government might have preferred to cremate Bin Laden's remains prior to disposal, Muslim tradition forbids cremation because it's inconsistent with the resurrection of the body. (The Vatican placed the same prohibition on Catholics between 1886 and 1963.) U.S. officials have told reporters that Bin Laden's body was handled in accordance with Islamic principles, although some Muslim scholars have already argued that the terrorist leader should have been buried in the ground with his head pointing toward Mecca.

Page 19: Yearly Themes. Task: Use guide sheet to complete the items on the slides

How do you define Jihad?

Page 20: Yearly Themes. Task: Use guide sheet to complete the items on the slides

9. Jihad-A Muslim’s struggle. Think of Jihad as a Muslim’s struggle to remain religious and follow the religion as practiced.

Page 21: Yearly Themes. Task: Use guide sheet to complete the items on the slides

10. Bin Laden 1998 Fatwah-Written in 1998 and outlines why Bin Laden feels it’s the duty of Muslims to kill Americans and her allies. It’s his declaration of war on the US.

First, for over seven years the United States has been occupying the lands of Islam in the holiest of places, the Arabian Peninsula, plundering its riches, dictating to its rulers, humiliating its people, terrorizing its neighbors, and turning its bases in the Peninsula into a spearhead through which to fight the neighboring Muslim peoples. If some people have in the past argued about the fact of the occupation, all the people of the Peninsula have now acknowledged it. The best proof of this is the Americans' continuing aggression against the Iraqi people using the Peninsula as a staging post, even though all its rulers are against their territories being used to that end, but they are helpless. Second, despite the great devastation inflicted on the Iraqi people by the crusader-Zionist alliance, and despite the huge number of those killed, which has exceeded 1 million... despite all this, the Americans are once against trying to repeat the horrific massacres, as though they are not content with the protracted blockade imposed after the ferocious war or the fragmentation and devastation.

So here they come to annihilate what is left of this people and to humiliate their Muslim neighbors. Third, if the Americans' aims behind these wars are religious and economic, the aim is also to serve the Jews' petty state and divert attention from its occupation of Jerusalem and murder of Muslims there.

Go Back to Jihad

Surah 2190. Fight in the cause of God those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for God loveth not transgressors. 191. And slay them wherever ye catch them, and turn them out from where they have Turned you out; for tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter; but fight them not at the Sacred Mosque, unless they (first) fight you there; but if they fight you, slay them. Such is the reward of those who suppress faith. 192. But if they cease, God is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. 193. And fight them on until there is no more Tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in God. but if they cease, Let there be no hostility except to those who practise oppression.

11. Fanatacism- Excessive enthusiasm, unreasoning energy or wild and extravagant notions on some subject. Someone or a group of people taking something way too serious. A Star Wars fanatic. A GTA 5 fanatic. The kid at NY Knick game who showed up to the game naked because he painted his body in team colors.

Task: Who else could be a fanatic?

12. Arab Nationalism-The key here is the use of the word nationalism. Think nation as these people want to celebrate, defend and preserve their nation. Not every Arab is a Muslim. An Arab simply means a person from Arabia which is a place on the Earth. I once met a Puerto Rican Muslim. I once met a Christian Arab. Combining Muslim and Arab is wrong. However, in America we tend to lump both together. Anyway, an Arab nationalist is advocating for their home or nation.

Task: Who else would be a nationalist?

Page 25: Yearly Themes. Task: Use guide sheet to complete the items on the slides

13. Imperialism-When a stronger nation uses its economy, politics, military or culture to take over a “weaker”.

Sun never sets on the British Empire

Page 26: Yearly Themes. Task: Use guide sheet to complete the items on the slides

14. Sharia Law-Using the Quran as a nation’s constitution and basis for laws. Rules and laws are created based on the Quran.

So what does the Quran say and how does it approach the issue of adultery?

“Those who commit unlawful sexual intercourse of your women – bring against them four [witnesses] from among you. And if they testify, confine the guilty women to houses until death takes them or Allah ordains for them [another] way”. Quran 4:15

Task: Write a law for adultery that using this passage.

What Does the Bible Say:

Leviticus 20:10 - And the man that committeth adultery with [another] man's wife, [even he] that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death

Page 27: Yearly Themes. Task: Use guide sheet to complete the items on the slides

14. Political Islam-Using Quran to seek political change. The idea that other political and economic systems such as democracy, communism and fascism has failed humanity and therefore, Islam will guide humanity.

Syed Qutub’s MilestonesIn 1964, an Egyptian Islamic author completed Milestones. Milestones was Qutub’s solution to the problems of humanity as well as the Islamic world. In his view, communism and democracy failed Muslims. The failure of these forces must direct Muslims to seek change themselves.

Chapter 1: We must also free ourselves from the clutches of jahili society, jahili concepts, jahili traditions and jahili leadership. Our mission is not to compromise with the practices of jahili society, nor can we be loyal to it. Jahili society, because of its jahili characteristics, is not worthy to be compromised with. Our aim is first to change ourselves so that we may later change the society.

15. Caliphate-The political leader of a Muslim state/nation.

Task: What is your view of the Pope?

Facts:Started as an al Qaeda splinter group. Also known as Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant and Islamic State (IS).The aim of ISIS is to create an Islamic state across Sunni areas of Iraq and in Syria.ISIS is known for killing dozens of people at a time and carrying out public executions, crucifixions and other acts. 17. Wahhabism-An ideology followed by some Muslims wishing to practice pure Islam without deviating from the Quran. Such followers are strict constructionists without deviating from their religion and any threat to the religion will be defended to the end.
