o An annual classical music festival in the city will now be christened as 'Sur

o The festival, to be held on February 4 is organised by Debapriya Adhikary

and Samanwaya Sarkar, disciples of Girija Devi.

o In the past three editions, it was called 'Sur Festival, from now on, it will

be 'Sur Girija Devi Festival'.

International Camel festival

o The two-day long, 25th International Camel festival has kick-started in

Rajasthan's Bikaner district.

o Organised by Department of Tourism, Art & Culture, Bikaner Camel

Festival is a yearly event in Jan that the city celebrates in honour of ship of

the desert, Camel.

o The seventh edition of the Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav, under the Ek

Bharat Shreshtha Bharat matrix, is set to begin in Karnataka.

o The state paired with Karnataka is Uttarakhand.

o The event will cover a profusion of art forms from classical and folk, music

and dance, theatre to literature and visual arts.

Int. kite festival begins in Gujarat

o The international kite festival which attracts kite flyers from across the

country and the world began on Sunday in Ahmedabad.

o The international kite festival was inaugurated by Gujarat Chief Minister

Vijay Rupani at Sabarmati Riverfront.

o The state government-sponsored festival will culminate on January 14,

which is celebrated as Uttarayan (Makar Sankranti).

World Book Fair Begins in Delhi

o The World Book Fair started in New Delhi. Environment issues like

climate change, global warming, and water pollution will be the main

theme for this year’s Fair.

o The annual book fair will see around 800 publishers from across the

country in different languages.

o Apart from the EU nations, more than 40 countries are participating in the

book fair.

India gets a Kashmiri film

o For the first time in 45 years, a Kashmiri feature film, shot and produced

entirely in the Valley, will hit cinema halls outside Kashmir.

o Kashmir Daily explores the themes of drug addiction and unemployment

in Kashmir.

o Ironically, the film will not see a theatrical release in Kashmir as there are

no functioning cinema halls in the Valley.

171st Araadhanai Music Festival Begins

o The 171st Araadhanai Music Festival of one of the Trinities of Carnatic

music Saint Thyagaraja begins in Thiruvaiyaru, Tamil Nadu.

o The main function of the festival – the choral singing of Thyagaraja’s five

kritis in Ghana ragas – will be held on his Samadhi day.

o Saint Tyagaraja, was one of the greatest composers of Carnatic music, a

form of Indian classical music.

Turkey's Bird Language in UNESCO's List

o The unusual and very efficient whistle language used as a means of

communication by villagers in remote northern Turkey entered the

UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

o UNESCO has accepted the "bird language" of Black Sea villagers as an

endangered part of world heritage in need of urgent protection.

o The UNESCO is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) based in

Paris.

Odisha releases Braille calendar

o The visually impaired in Odisha will get this year’s Odia calendar and

almanac in the Braille format.

o It is printed and published by Computerised Braille Press in Berhampur.

o Printing of the calendar, Braille Dinapanjhika 2018, has been sponsored

by the Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities

Department of Odisha government.

2018 declared as Telugu promotion year

o Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu declared 2018 as

Telugu promotion year.

o He made this announcement at 29th edition of Annual Book Exhibition of

Vijayawada.

o Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and the Chief Minister inaugurated the

fest, which will remain open till January 11 at Swaraj Maidan.

UP theme state for Surajkund crafts mela

o The Haryana tourism department disclosed that Uttar Pradesh would be

the theme state for the 32nd Surajkund International Crafts Mela.

o It would be organized at Surajkund, Faridabad from February 2 to 15.

o Apart from all other states, about 24 countries would also participate in it.

o The fair provides a world-class platform for handicrafts from around the

world to showcase their skills.

44th Khajuraho Dance Festival Held In MP

o The 44th edition of Khajuraho Dance Festival 2018 was held at Khajuraho

temple, a UNESCO world heritage site in Madhya Pradesh.

o Khajuraho Dance Festival is an annual cultural festival that highlights the

richness of various Indian classical dance styles.

o The 6-day festival showcased classical dances including Kathak, Odissi,

Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi, Kathakali and Mohiniattam.

Guwahati organises festival ‘Aadi Mahotsava’

o On 23rd February 2018, ‘Aadi Mahotsava’, a tribal festival organized by

Assam, began at Gandhi Mandir Indoor stadium, in Guwahati, Assam.

o The ‘Aadi Mahotsava’ is held for 10 days. It was inaugurated by Assam

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

o ‘Aadi Mahotsava’ celebrates the art and culture of tribal communities.

People blowed 'shankh' to create world record

o A record was set on the second day of Rajim Kumbh Mela in Chhattisgarh

after over 2,100 saints and locals blew 'shankh' (conch shells) together.

o Golden Book of World Records certified the record.

Madavoor Vasudevan Nair Passes Away

o Kathakali maestro Madavoor Vasudevan Nair collapsed on stage and died

while performing at Agasthyacodu Mahadeva Temple, Kerala.

o A recipient of several awards, including Padma Bhushan, he was the

follower of the Kaplingattu School, the particular style of south Kerala.

o Madvoor had also worked as a faculty in the Thekkan Kalari of Kerala

Kalamandalam.

Kovind Inaugurates Mahamastakabhisheka Utsav

o President Ram Nath Kovind will inaugurate the 88th

Mahamastakabhisheka Utsav of Lord Gommateshwara in

Sharavanabelagola in Hassan district of Karnataka.

o Mahamastakabhiseka of Gommateshwara, who is also known as Bahubali

takes place once in 12 years.

o It is an important Jain piligramage centre and lakhs of tourists visit

Shravanbelagola to see 57 feet tall monolithic stone statue.

Taj Mahotsav to start soon

o This year's 'Taj Mahotsav' will start with a dance-drama based on Lord

Ram instead of the usual theme based on Mughal culture.

o The move has led to the state government being accused of ignoring the

Mughal history.

o The government has, however, denied any role in the decision, saying that

the event is organised by local administration.

4,400-year-old tomb discovered in Egypt

o The tomb of ancient priestess Hetpet has been uncovered by

archaeologists near Cairo, Egypt.

o The famous Madhavpur Mela began at Madhavpur Ghed of Porbandar

district in Gujarat on 25th March.

o In a unique initiative, the four-day-long Mela will see its first-ever cultural

integration with the North-East with which it is said to share its roots.

o The Madhavpur Mela of Gujarat shares its connection with the Mishmi

Tribe of Arunachal Pradesh.

Silver Jubilee of Losar festival

o Buddhist Community of Itanagar celebrated the silver jubilee of the Losar

Festival.

o The festival was full of cultural presentations from across the state,

including the colourful Bhutanese and the Gorkha Cultural programs.

o For the locals, Losar gives them a good harvesting year ahead.

o For the Buddhist community, the festival is termed as the 'New Year'

according to their Buddhist calendar.

World’s first hand-painted film eyes an Oscar

o ‘Loving Vincent’ is the world’s first animated feature film entirely painted

by hand.

o With 65,000 frames to be exact, all paintings are in the distinct style of

Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh.

o The film is based on a probe into Van Gogh’s untimely death.

International Buddhist meet begins in Lumbini

o The International Buddhist Conference got under way in Lumbini, the

birthplace of Lord Buddha.

o Representatives from 16 countries including U.S., Japan, India, China,

Indonesia and Sri Lanka will attend the conference.

Manipur's Shirui Lily festival began

o Manipur's five-day Shirui Lily State Festival commenced on 24th April in

the Ukhrul district headquarters.

o The festival, organized by the State Tourism Department, aimed to spread

awareness and conserve the endangered state flower 'Shirui Lily', while

also promote the hill district as a potential tourist destination.

o The campaign is organized by The Giving Tree and Hill Wild.

Bisket Jatra being celebrated in Nepal

o In Nepal, the famous Bisket Jatra is being celebrated in Bhaktapur and

other parts of Kathmandu valley.

o The nine day annual festival marks beginning of Nepali new year.

o The Jatra begins four days before the start of new year.

o The main attraction of Bisket Jatra is chariot procession of Lord

Bhairavanath.

o The Manipur-based indigenous "Longpi Hampai pottery" has started

gaining prominence in the international markets owing to its intricate

designs and technology used to produce them.

o The ancient art has originated from two Longpi villages in Manipur

o It is practised by Tangkhul community residing in the hill district of

Manipur.

World's Largest Bird Sculpture 'Jatayu'

o Kerala tourism will soon inaugurate the world's largest bird sculpture,

Jatayu Earth's Centre in Kollam, Kerala.

o The replica of bird 'Jatayu', a character in the Ramayana is 65 feet tall & is

positioned right at the top of a rock situated 1,000 feet above sea level.

o The rock, 'Jatayupara', where the structure is based, is the place

where Jatayu fell after its wings were slain by Ravana.

Digitisation of dying languages

o Centre and State Governments are working along with start-ups to provide

regional language-related products and services.

o Languages like Ol Chiki script of Santali which is also one of the 22 official

languages of India and Gondi language are gaining popularity due to this

measure.

o The not-for-profit organisation 'Indic Project' has developed open source

tools for language digitisation.

India to organise cultural festival in Egypt

o India is organising a 5 day cultural festival in Egypt to commemorate the

157th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.

poetry.

UNESCO adds 8 pre-Islamic Iranian sites

o UNESCO has added 8 pre-Islamic Iranian archeological sites to its World

Heritage List.

o The sites collectively appear on the worldwide list as the "Sassanid

Archaeological Landscape of Fars region (Islamic Republic of Iran)".

o With the latest addition, Iran now has 24 sites on the heritage list of the

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.

19,500+ mother tongues spoken in India

o According to the latest analysis of 2011 census, more than 19,500

languages or dialects are spoken in India as mother tongues.

o There are 121 languages which are spoken by 10,000 or more people in

India, which has a population of 121 crore.

o 96.71% population in the country have one of the 22 scheduled languages

as their mother tongue.

'Experiencing North East’ festival begun

o The ‘Experiencing North East’ festival depicting the uniqueness of North

Eastern culture is being organised at India International Centre, Delhi

from 27th-31st October 2018.

o The festival is a part of Destination North East series.

o It is being organised by the North Eastern Council (NEC), Ministry of

Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) in collaboration with

o The first corn festival of the country held in Chhindwara in Madhya

Pradesh from 29-30 Sept.

o The event will see scientists working on maize from across the country

who will share their knowledge of the new developments and

opportunities for corn based products.

o Madhya Pradesh is one of the largest corn producing states in India with

Chhindwara being the highest corn producing district.

'Gita Festival' will be held in Kurukshetra

o The 'International Gita Festival 2018' will be organised in Kurukshetra in

'Jhiri Mela' inaugurated by J-K Governor

o Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik inaugurated a week-long

'Jhiri Mela' at village Jhiri in Jammu district on 23 November 2018.

o The annual fair is commemorated in the memory of the martyrdom of

'Baba Jittoo'.

o He was a farmer who gave up his life about 500 years ago in protest

against the oppressive demands of a landlord.

o The three-day 'Jangalmahal festival' was inaugurated in Kolkata on 23

November 2018.

o Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated Manipur's annual

'Sangai' tourism festival on 21 November 2018.

o The festival is named after the state animal, Sangai, the brow-antlered

deer found only in Manipur.

o The 10-day festival will see various cultural troupes from different parts of

the country.

o The festival was held for the first time in 2010.

'Aadi Mahotsav' being organised from 16 Nov

o 'Aadi Mahotsav', a National Tribal Festival is being organised from 16th to

30th November 2018 in New Delhi by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs.

o The theme of the festival is 'A Celebration of the Spirit of Tribal Culture,

Craft, Cuisine and Commerce'.

o The Mahotsav will comprise of display and sale of items of tribal art and

craft, tribal medicine and healers, tribal cuisine etc.

International Cherry Blossom Festival began

o The 'India International Cherry Blossom Festival 2018' was inaugurated in

Shillong on 14 November 2018.

Northeast Youth Festival to begin from 15 Nov

o Tripura will host the 6th 'Northeast Youth Festival' from 15 November

2018.

o Various sports events and cultural programmes such as folk music, folk

dance, rock music, martial arts, adventure sports, handicrafts shows, yoga,

and boat race will be held at the three-day festival.

o The 24th Kolkata International Film Festival began in Kolkata on 10

o A centenary tribute will be paid to legendary Swedish director-producer

Ingmar Bergman through the screening of eight of his outstanding movies.

o Malayalam film Olu will be the opening film at the 49th International Film

o Mauritius Acting President Paramasivum Pillay Vyapoory announced that

Mauritius would organise the 'Gita festival' in February 2019.

o The International Gita festival was inaugurated in Haryana on 7 December

o Mauritius is the partner country and Gujarat is the partner state of the
