Year Three Curriculum Autumn 1 Autumn 2 Spring 1 Spring 2 Summer 1 Summer 2 PSHE: ‘New beginnings’ We set up our classroom and get to know each other and our new school. We also explore British rules and law. Art: Colour and pattern is studied and we use what we learn to produce symmetrical quilt squares. History: We study changes in Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. This topic begins with a journey back in time where two Stone Age men visit our school! Please see our school blog for photos. Science: We learn about rocks and fossils and link this to the Stone Age. Art/DT: This compliments our Stone Age work and includes cave painting, clay pots, jewellery and building. RE: Why did Mary & Joseph… make the journey to Bethlehem? We also learn about the role of Jesus. Science: We explore forces and magnets and enjoy experimenting! RE: If life is a journey, does it ever end? Why do some people go on a pilgrimage? This study includes discussion about mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. We visit Walsingham to learn more about Christianity and pilgrimage. Science: We learn about plants and what they need to grow and survive. Science: We study the skeleton, muscles and keeping healthy. Geography: We discover more about the local area of Bowthorpe and its history. Y3 children follow the Read Write Inc program until their reading is secure. Others will take part in English lessons, which cover the following.

In maths we follow the National Curriculum for the level the children are working at. We have two groups working on the Year 2 to 3 objectives and two groups working on the Year 3 to 4 objectives. We regularly assess the children to ensure they are in the group that gives them the correct level of challenge.

Term: Autumn Spring Summer Theme: Billy Goats Gruff Fruit Aliens Robots Poetry We explore list poetry and

write poems about trolls.

We look at shape poems and write our own about different fruits. We enjoying tasting fruit too.

We learn an alien poem by heart and edit this to write our own versions.

We write poems about robots, which we design ourselves.

Shakespeare The whole school will work on this. This will include lots of learning through drama.

Narrative We learn the traditional tale of The Three Billy Goats Gruff and write our own stories with goodies and baddies.

We learn a story called The Papaya That Spoke. We use the pattern of this story to write our own with strange things talking.

We learn a mysterious story about Aliens landing. We write our own stories about aliens visiting too.

We use the opening from The Iron Man as inspiration to write own our super story starts.

Non-fiction

We learn instructions about trapping a troll then write our own instructions for catching some Stone Age dinner (this links to our history topic work).

We learn about advertising and produce our own TV adverts about a made up fruit.

We invent our own aliens and write non-chronological reports about them.

We watch a video clip about an inventor and write newspaper reports based on this.
