The NADEP “Listening Post” Returns!Twenty years ago the largest employer in Hampton Roads closed its doors, falling victim to the base realignment process. The aircraft maintenance facility, known as the Naval Aviation Depot Norfolk (or NADEP), will be the subject of a special commemorative exhibit and event in September 2016.
The Naval Air Station featured a dedicated aircraft maintenance detachment from World War I, when the Construction and Repair Department was part of the commissioned station. In 1922, it was renamed Assembly and Repair Department and under that name met the challenges of World War II. In May 1948, the first jet squadron qualified for fleet operation. The Assembly and Repair Department, which had not assembled aircraft for some time, was renamed “Overhaul and Repair,” before being known as the Naval Air Rework Facility and finally NADEP.
The Norfolk facility served as the Navy’s chief supplier of aircraft parts and its major rework plant. By 1976, the air rework plant covered 174 acres and included 175 buildings. In the 1970s and 1980s its workers restored or repaired F-14 Tomcats, A-6 Intruders and F-8 Crusaders among other aircraft. Join us to commemorate and celebrate the good people and the good work of NADEP at the social event called “The Listening Post.”
This event is sponsored by Chartway Federal Credit Union. For more information call 757-322-3168
