DEAR FRIENDS,For the Cahoon Museum, 2019 was a year of noteworthy accomplishments with widely expanded impact and service to our community. Our successes this and every year are made possible by steadfast support from our generous community of donors, members, and volunteers to whom we are profoundly grateful.

In 2019, the Cahoon Museum presented 9 high-quality art exhibitions that featured local, regional, and international artists and artwork. We launched a new series, Cahoon Contemporaries, that showcased the Museum’s commitment to innovative contemporary art practices from around New England and continued our Streetside public art initiative with the bold Blue Trees environmental art installation. As a result, we saw a 48 percent increase in visitation.

The Cahoon deepened our community connections and access to the arts. Community businesses increased exhibition and event sponsorships by a remarkable 64 percent. Of our robust schedule of programs – ranging from artist’s talks, art demonstrations, lectures, tours, and open houses – many were offered with free access or were free with museum admission. The Cahoon’s new website, launched in 2019, offered another form of accessibility to educational information and visits to the website nearly doubled.

In the year ahead, the Cahoon will focus on expanding educational programming for schoolchildren and families and work to ensure the Museum’s financial strength into the future with a new focus on planned giving.

Everything we do is made possible by the remarkable generosity of our donors and members. Thank you for all the ways you support the Cahoon and help us bring our educational mission to life – every day, on site and online. As we look toward the future, I am heartened and invigorated by the many milestones we’ve achieved together – none would be possible without your generous participation and contributions.

With gratitude,

Sarah Johnson

NEW ACQUISITIONSThe acquisition of significant artworks serves to expand and deepen the Cahoon Museum’s collection of American art. The Museum’s commitment to collecting works of the highest quality is supported by purchase funds from the Cahoon Society and Director’s Circle and also through the generous donations of many collectors. These gifts enable the Museum to further its mission of celebrating American art.

CHRONICLE FEATUREThe beautiful blue trees caught the attention of Chronicle and marked the Cahoon’s first tv appearance which aired on July 18. Nicole Estaphan from WCVB Channel 5, with Rich Ward behind the camera, interviewed Museum Director Sarah Johnson about the Blue Trees, the Sailors Valentines exhibition and the Museum’s ambitious exhibition schedule.

The Cahoon Museum commissioned artist Konstantin Dimopoulos to create a bold and colorful environmental art installation. The artist’s mission is to draw attention to global deforestation and the importance of trees to the planet. With the help of dozens of community volunteers, he temporarily colored trees on the Museum’s grounds a vibrant shade of blue. The artist believes that by changing our familiar landscape, his work can generate thinking and discussion.
