This week in class: In class this week, we celebrated World Book Day by having a whole week focussed on Traditional Tales. We have shared with the children many different stories and asked the children questions about the stories, such as who are the main characters? What happened at the beginning of the story? What happened at the end of the story? Etc. On Thursday we dressed up as our favourite book characters and the children had a wonderful day full of book related activities. We had a visit from Year 6, who came to read to the children and finished the afternoon off by having a visit from Reception where we shared and spoke about our World Book Day outfits and favourite stories.

20, the different shapes and using the language ‘more than and less than’. In phonics we will be learning the sound ‘o’ and the red word ‘the’.

Word of the week Extinguisher – We will be using the word extinguisher when talking about the fire service.

Literacy and Communication and Language Our traditional tale this week was the story of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. The children enjoyed listening to the story and as part of our personal and social development we talked about Jack and his actions. Did we think it was right for Jack to take the hen and the harp? Was Jack a good or bad character? Was the giant a bad character? Reception also went on their school trip to The Discovery Centre and stepped into a fantastic world of storytelling and fairy tales. The children had an amazing time exploring and creating their own stories. We must also congratulate the children on their excellent behaviour, well done Reception! On return to school, the children then wrote a recount of their day in our Big Write session. The children recalled the events of the day and wrote independently, using their sounds and remembering capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. Phonics lessons continue daily and the phase three sounds are being used in sentence writing along with tricky words. Independent writing skills are being encouraged in all areas of our learning and reading back what we have written. Can you read it and does it make sense? Next week we will read the story of The Three Little Pigs.

Maths

In our Maths lessons, we have continued to add two numbers together and record our answers in a number sentence. Counting forwards and backwards continues and we have practised doubling numbers. Children have continued to double numbers by adding on the same number. We also shared our classroom with a giant beanstalk with some very large footprints! We measured the footprints using different objects and also found something longer, shorter and the same size. Some of us also discussed the ‘difference’ between two objects when measuring with multi-link cubes. We estimated first and then counted the difference to check our estimating skills to see if it was a good guess. Next week we will be learning time and practising addition and subtraction.

Suggestions of ways you can support your reception child with the EYFS curriculum:

Please continue to practise all of the sounds your child has learnt, with a particular focus on digraphs and tri-graphs when reading. Search for ‘tricky words’ and practise writing them. Compare objects and talk about the difference in size. Order objects according to height and size and use different methods to measure them (e.g hands, feet, bricks, books) Look at the time and discuss what times of the day we do different things such as breakfast time, lunchtime and suppertime – food is always an important part of the day!

Thank you Reception parents! The children looked amazing and had a fantastic literary time celebrating world book day. It was made possible by your support, providing the children with such wonderful and creative costumes. Please ensure your child has an Oakfields coat for playtimes and if buying or replacing this coat, please ensure it is big enough to wear over the top of the school blazer. We thank you for your continued support and we wish you a very restful weekend.
