KEY SKILLS
MAKING COMPARISONS
We use comparatives to compare two things:
plus + adjective + que = more … than …Le footing est plus fatigant que la natationJogging is more tiring than swimming.
moins + adjective + que = less … than …La danse est moins amusante que le patin à glaceDance is less fun than (not as fun as) ice-skating
A few things to check when using comparatives:• The adjective must agree with the first noun mentioned.• In English, we sometimes add –er to the adjective (e.g. faster, easier) but you cannot
do this is French. You must use plus or moins.• Use liaison when plus or moins are followed by an adjective that begins with a vowel:
plus amusant que, moins intéressant que.
TALKING ABOUT SPORTS
Use jouer à + definite article with sports you playUse faire de + definite article with sports you do
Remember that à and de change when used with le and les
J’AI MAL À …
To say something hurts or that you are in pain, you use the expression j’ai mal à. As in other situations where we use à (like jouer à), the àchanges according to the noun that follows:
à + le au bras
à + la à la jambe
à + l’ à + l’épaule
à + les aux yeux
I can …Give opinions about sports ……………….Use the comparative …………………………

Use irregular verbs in the simple future tense ……………………………………..
J’irai au collège à vélo et pas en voiture
Au camp anti-fitness, on ne mangera pas beaucoup de fruits
Je ferai tous les jours des activités physiques
Talk about getting fit …………………………
Use two / three tenses together ……….
Moi, je mange assez sain, j’adore les fruits et je bois beaucoup d’eauJe ne suis pas très actif/active mais j’ai pris des résolutions. D’abord, j’irais / je vais aller au collège a pied
NEGATIVE STRUCTURES – FUTURE TENSE
To make a negative, you put the negative structure e.g. ne … pas, ne …plus, ne … jamais around the verb OR the auxiliary verb depending on which future tense you are using. Remember ne shortens to n’ in front of a vowel sound.
NEAR FUTUREThe ne … pas goes around the part of aller (auxiliary verb):Je ne vais pas manger équilibréI am not going to eat a balanced diet
SIMPLE FUTUREThe ne … pas goes around the main verb:Je ne mangerai pas équilibréI will not eat a balanced diet
After a negative un, une, du, de la, de l’ and des all become de (d’ before a vowel).Je ne mangerai plus de chips – I will not eat crisps anymoreJe ne boirai jamais de boissons gazeuses – I will never drink fizzy drinks.
THE NEAR FUTURE TENSE
The Near future tense is used to describe whatis going to happen in the future.
It is formed using the present tense of aller + the infinitive of the verb.
e.g. je vais regarder – I am going to watchJe vais finir – I am going to finishJe vais aller – I am going to go
THE SIMPLE FUTURE TENSE
The simple future tense in French is used to talk about what will happen in the future
In English it translates as I will…. e.g. I will go to college. But there is no word for ‘will’ in French: instead you need to recognise a future tense verb from the future stem and the endings below.
To form the future tense follow these steps:1. For regular verbs Take the INFINITIVE form of the verb and
add the following endings
je / j’ ai
tu as
il/elle/on a
nous ons
vous ez
ils/elles ont
avoir aur- j’aurai
être ser- ce sera
aller ir- j’irai
faire fer- nous ferons
2. For irregular verbs, the future tense is formed with the future stem of the verb and the future tense endings:
When you use si (if) with the present tense, the second part of the sentence may use the future tense. Si j’ai du temps, je jouerai au foot – If I have time, I will play football
e.g. Je jouerai au footI will play football
aller – to go
je vais
tu vas
il/elle/on va
nous allons
vous allez
ils/elles vont

DEPUIS – FOR/SINCE
We use depuis to say how long something has been happening or since when.
1) how long - depuis trois jours = for three days2) since when - depuis hier = since yesterday
It is a little tricky to use in French because we use a different tense in English:I have been playing football for two years = past tenseverb structureJe joue au foot depuis deux ans = present tense verb structure
IL FAUT + INFINITIVE
il faut means “it is necessary to” / “you must”.il ne faut pas means “you must not”It is followed by the infinitive.
Il faut manger équilibréYou must eat healthilyIl ne faut pas fumerYou must not smoke
After il ne faut pas, un, une and des become de:Il ne faut pas manger de bonbons(You must not eat (any) sweets
