What do you already know about fractions?
What is a fraction?

Monday – MathsL.O. To identify unit and non-unit fractions.
A fraction shows us a part of a whole. The whole is split into equal sized parts.

What is this fraction?
What does the ‘top number’ tell us?
What does the ‘bottom number’ tell us?

Monday – MathsL.O. To identify unit and non-unit fractions.

2
The ‘top number’ is called the numerator. It shows us how many parts are being counted.
The ‘bottom number’ is called the denominator. It shows us how many parts the whole is split into.
One half means that the whole is split into two parts and we are counting one of those parts. 5

You don’t need to pause the video when asked to. 6
Monday – MathsL.O. To identify unit and non-unit fractions.
Unit and non-unit fractions
Unit fractions: fractions where the numerator is 1. For example ½ or ¼ are unit fractions.
Non-unit fractions: fractions where the numerator is not 1.
For example 3/4 or 2/3 are non-unit fractions.
