Girl’s Rugby Union On Monday the 27th of August the Girl’s Rugby Union Team started their 6 hour bus ride to Forster to compete in the State Championships of the Coast to Country Cup. We arrived at the Smugglers Cove at 6pm. After we got rooms organised we went to the beach to have a little training session before the big carnival on Tuesday. The next day everyone was pumped. First up the girls versed Maitland thrashing them 25-0, a convincing start to the day. The next team we faced was Condobolin with Daisy starting the game off by scoring in the first 3 minutes, we had a good lead from the beginning. Condo struck back putting their first score against us. They were no match against our girls when we rallied our force and scored another 4 tries winning 25-5, still undefeated. We had a break and watched our next opponents Aberdeen, they looked tough and were going to be hard to beat but the girls had confidence! They ran onto the field ready to win. The first try went to Aberdeen early in the game but the girls woke up and scored 2 tries straight away leading 10-5 at half time. There were some big hits in the second half and with no help from the Ref Aberdeen scored again but the Rugby girls threw it straight back in their face with another try. Late in the second half Casino had a penalty close to the line but because the ref was so docile - Aberdeen were offside and stole the ball and scored a runaway try evening the game at 15-15. Our girls made it through to the grand final by the skin of our teeth by collecting only one more bonus point then Aberdeen. In the grand final we met Brisbane Waters, a touch side, that were fast and fit and hadn’t played as many games as the Casino girls. Even though they were no match with the girls tackling they outpaced us and quickly scored 2 tries going into half time with a 10-0 lead. The girls didn’t give up, we got 10 points on the board only to be defeated at full time by 20-10. Our first loss of the day. But the girls played well and played hard. Daisy Gordon scored 9 tries throughout the day and collected Most Valuable Player, Freya Russell scored 2 tries as well as Lakesha Fraser scoring 2 tries. Jahnae Jackson got players player and performed some massive hits! All the girls played well and it was an admirable feat. Our team is now the second best Rugby 7’s team in the state!!!! - Freya & Darian

Year 10 Agriculture Students recently studied a unit on Dairy
Farming and the Dairy Industry. The unit was called ‘Cows Create Careers’. During this unit they raised two calves that were bottle fed twice a day (these calves were kindly donated by local dairy farmers Mr Sam and Mrs Fleur Tonge). Two guest speakers from the dairy industry also came to talk with the students about dairy farming, milk processing and the many career pathways associated with this industry. As part of the unit, assignment tasks
were undertaken which included writing a letter of appreciation to the dairy farmers who donated the calves, an advertisement poster promoting a calf milk replacer product, and a 3D model of any aspect of the dairy industry. Two of these tasks are worthy of special mention in this article. One was a clever 3D representation of a NLIS (National Livestock Identification Scheme) Ear Tag with explanation labels that related to the numbering system on the ear tags made by Angelique Dillon. The other was a large model of an older style ‘Walk Through’ Dairy and Farm (see photo) made by Luke Vidler with assistance from Liam Morris, Steven Newby, Rhys Patton and Ben Pitman. This model is on display at the school’s office and we invite your inspection of it.

U15s BOYS BASKETBALL TRIUMPH!
On Tuesday 28th August both boys and girls travelled to Lismore to compete in the Zone Knockout. Both
teams were successful in progressing through the first round with narrow victories over Evans River (Girls
12-10, Boys 18-16).
Despite a valiant effort, the girls were beaten (18-12) in round two to a very well drilled Lismore High team
–who went on to win the girls division. Standout players were Nikki Connell as Centre and Talluah Close at
Point Guard.
Due to late withdrawals the boys were fortunate to advance straight into the final round against competition
favourites Richmond River – a team boasting three representative players. The boys fought hard in attack
and defence and managed to hang on to be down by one point at halftime (21-20). In the third quarter the
boys rallied and pressured their opponents,
keeping them scoreless by intercepting passes and
forcing turnovers with their well organised zone
defence. Game high-scorer Jakobi ‘Dingo’
Robinson (12 points), overall high-scorer Thomas
McGrady (10 points in both games) and a
dominant Travis Eggins (6 points) helped extend
our score to give Casino an eight point lead going
into the fourth. Richmond River was left reeling as
our boys continued to unite and finish out the
game (34-23).
It’s great to see boys basketball evolving as a
competitive sport at Casino High, and I wish the
team good luck as they go on to compete in the
Regionals. Massive thanks to the parents who
provided travel and support on the day – we would
not be able to participate without them. Mr.

YEAR 11 Hospitality Sea-World
Excursion 2012. Students commenced their Hotel School
on the 20th August 2012.
On arrival at the resort, students were
given uniforms to wear with the resort
logo on their pocket, along with their own
name tag as they could be identified by
hotel guest as employees of the resort,
each student looked a worthy employee
and acted appropriately.
Students were placed into two groups;
they were then taken to different areas of
the resort to work for specified times e.g.
Kitchen, Concierge, and Front of House
etc.
In the afternoon students spent time in the classroom gaining valuable theory information in the running of an
organisation, such as Sea-World.
In the evening we became guests of the resort and students were able to dine in the Shoreline Resorts along with other
paying customers. Students dressed up and looked very dashing and were a pleasure to be with.
All students were exemplary in their behaviour they represented both themselves and their community of Casino with
respect and dignity.
Congratulations to all students on graduating on completion of the course and special congratulations to Gabby
Andrews, Nicole Green, Courtney Connell and Eliseo Urrea on your achievements as ‘STAR PERFORMERS’ during
the week.

The Boys Education Leadership Camp
This year marked the 11th annual pilgrimage to
‘Stinson Campground’ with a healthy number of
camp participants…35 brave young souls. The
weather proved our friend as the clouds and rain
experienced earlier in the term cleared to give way to
3 fantastic days.
Upon setting up camp the boys readied themselves
for the Stretcher Bearer Track. The boys powered
their way to the final location in record time (under 2
hours) transporting additional equipment for a special
construction activity. The boys learnt more of the
significance of the walk and the special place it now
holds for them. The boys recited a special pledge
prepared by Mr Pietens three years earlier and wrote
their names into the ‘Leadership Honours Book’. The
book, ode and totem pole remain on the mountain in
a secret location awaiting the groups return next year.
It was then that the boys began constructing their
own stretchers. With great will, tenacity and team
work teams of boys worked together to safely transfer a stretcher patient back to base camp. This was the Stretcher Bearer Track
after all!!
Day 2 the boys journeyed to Westray’s Grave, a 19km hike. The boys set a good pace relishing the dryer conditions. Despite a
hard push the day before along the ‘Stretcher Bearer’ many of the boys showed great resolve and stamina. Life lessons in the
meanings of trust, responsibility and managing risk in our daily lives are always themes we look to develop in our young men.
Lessons that were reinforced over the course of the day which helped galvanise an understanding for many. At night, a number of
the boys competed in a ‘Best Chef’ competition (Roley Lollback can cook ladies – desserts are his specialty!!), played night
games, discussed a number of issues around the camp fire, played guitar and cooked damper.
Day 3 began with an early breakfast before packing up camp. As the tents dried from the early morning dew the boys participated
in a number of team, trust and leadership activities led by a number of our Year 10 Senior Leaders selected by the teachers on the
camp. After packing the bus, lunch was enjoyed at the Rathdowney Café. On the final leg of the bus trip home the boys (who
hadn’t fallen asleep) viewed a movie and no doubt began to reflect on a place that now has special significance and meaning to
those who have been.
I would like to thank all the boys for making this camp one to remember. A special thanks to Mr Flynn,
Mr Pietens and Mr Ellis for their outstanding efforts, guidance, care and support in making this a worthwhile and fun experience
for our young men.
