What will I do?At our summer schools you’ll have the chance to experience life as a first-year student. You’ll attend lectures, seminars and hands-on workshops, get tips on putting together your UCAS application and gain important study skills. You’ll also learn first-hand what student life is like from our student ambassadors. There will be lots of opportunities to make new friends too!

Why choose London Met summer schools?Our summer schools give you the opportunity to explore university life and discover what your course is really like.

How much does it cost?Our summer schools are completely free and include lunch, refreshments and all trips and activities. Please note that all of our courses are non-residential. Unfortunately we cannot provide accommodation.

Who can attend?Our courses are designed for Year 12 students from UK state schools and colleges. While some of our courses require you to be studying a particular subject already, others are open to everyone, regardless of the course you study. Priority will also be given if you meet any of the following criteria:• neither of your parents attended university• you are/have been in local authority care• you have a disability affecting your studies• you have been eligible for free school meals

during your secondary education• you come from areas with low overall

progression rates to higher education

Design and build your own robot

Electronic engineering, robotic engineering

Those studying computing or physics A level / BTEC or equivalent.

This is a fantastic opportunity to find out why robotic technology is increasingly used in everything from surveillance drones to personal butlers. You’ll get hands-on experience of making robots perform tasks using our in-house designed system that develops programs for robots – you could be programming a series of tiny robots to follow a black line, avoid obstacles and write simple words, for example. You’ll also attend a series of short lectures and seminars introducing robots, their design, operation and applications before building your own robots and presenting your work to an expert panel of industry specialists.

Human sciences Biology, biomedical sciences, chemistry, forensic science, pharmaceutical science

Those studying biology or chemistry A level / BTEC or equivalent.

You’ll take part in a series of lab-based activities exploring the form, function and diseases of our body’s most complex recycling system – the human kidney. You’ll discover the anatomical structure and relate it to the holistic function of the organ. Sessions will take place in the University's £30m Science Centre, which includes one of the largest open-plan laboratories in Europe, and the week will culminate in a kidney dissection.

A week of creative technology

Computer games graphics, programming

Any student with a strong interest in computer graphics, animation, game design and development.

During this exciting week you will develop skills in 2D character design and 3D modelling, discover different techniques for animation, use cameras and tripods to create a cinemagraph and learn how to draw with code. The workshops will include short lectures and the opportunity to work with industry-standard software, culminating in the development of a small portfolio.

Psychology in the real world

Psychology Anyone studying psychology A level / BTEC or equivalent.

Last year at our psychology summer school, just some of the topics we discussed included why magical illusions work, nature vs nurture, the effects of drugs on the brain, peer pressure and eyewitness memory. Each day we explore a different core area of psychology and how it can explain human behaviour in real-world contexts in a mixture of short lectures, group practicals and hands-on workshops.

An introduction to university maths

Maths, statistics Those interested in studying maths at university. Ideally you will be studying maths or another numerate subject at A level / BTEC or equivalent.

During the week you will get a taste of what it is like to study mathematics at degree level. The sessions will be a combination of theory and practice of various topics taught at London Met. We will discuss logic and sets, application of matrices, dynamical systems, optimisation, problem solving and statistical models. You will also have the opportunity to use computer algebra software such as Maple, SPSS and Excel.

Acting and re-acting Theatre practice, performing arts A level / BTEC theatre, drama or performing arts students. We may also accept you if you have significant performing arts experience.

If you want to get a taste of studying theatre practice at degree level, with the chance to work with specialists in movement, voice and acting, then this summer school is for you. The week will involve a series of practical theatre workshops, where we will be investigating the notion of 'acting and re-acting’. The workshops build towards a performance of both text-based and devised work which will be performed on the last day.

Gender, sexuality and education

Sociology, education, social policy

Those studying courses related to sociology, history, citizenship or politics.

The topic of gender and sexuality is an important part of sociological research. You’ll be investigating different aspects of femininity and masculinity and you’ll take part in a nature or nurture debate. You’ll also develop presentations with the help of leading academics in this area and explore how gender and sexuality shape the way we experience the social world.

Journalist for a week Journalism Anyone who has an interest in studying journalism at university.

Working with a professional journalist in our cutting-edge newsroom, we will give you training in journalistic techniques before you take on the role of a reporter, photographer and sub-editor. Using professional production software, you will write and research your own news for distribution to fellow students and staff at the end of the week and develop the creative, organisational and interpersonal skills required for a career in media.

Early childhood: learning through play

Early childhood studies, early years teaching

Those interested in studying early childhood studies or early years teaching at university. This is also suitable for those currently studying health and social care.

During this week we will consider the importance of play to children and adults. Through observing children in play we’ll be looking at the different types of play and play activities they enjoy. We may take a visit to the V&A Museum of Childhood to look at the toys you played with as children and to discuss how toys have changed through the years. You will also experience lectures and undertake your own research into a particular aspect of play to present at the end of the week.

Law Anyone who has an interest in studying law at university.

We will introduce you to the fascinating world of the British legal system. You will learn how law is relevant to what sometimes may appear to be the most mundane aspects of our lives and how law has developed over hundreds of years and continues to develop today in response to increasingly rapid social, political and technical change. You will have the opportunity to participate in a debate in our mock courtroom involving questions of human rights in relation to the expression of religious belief and to visit the Royal Courts of Justice.

Fundamentals of fashion marketing; how marketing is used in the fashion industry

Marketing, business, fashion Those with an interest in studying business and marketing. This would suit anyone studying business, textiles, design, sociology or vocational courses in retail, operations management, fashion or leisure.

If you want to sharpen your business skills and see how the latest marketing techniques are shaping the fashion industry today, then this is a great introduction. This course combines the excitement of exposure to the fashion industry with an understanding of the role and significance that fashion marketing plays in contemporary society and the nature of consumer demand.

Managing resources in business: the fascinating challenges of the aviation industry

Business management, aviation management, human resource management, travel and tourism

Anyone who has an interest in studying business or aviation-related courses. This would suit those studying business, economics, retail or travel and tourism.

Aviation is a truly global business. The management of airlines and airports goes well beyond just planes and flights. It must draw on sound management practice from professionals with very different skills in business, finance, logistics, economics, marketing, law and human resources, as well as safety, security and intercultural communications experts. You’ll be looking at a number of real-world problems facing managers in the industry and discover how professionals in the field approach and analyse situations to find solutions.

City modelling Architecture, design Those studying at least one art or design-related subject at A level / BTEC or equivalent.

In the city modelling course, you’ll be investigating a site where you’ll be asked to design and create a shelter for a person. Working with architects and design professionals, you’ll be guided throughout from a sketched design that will be realised as a model. At the end of the week you’ll present your work in a special exhibition in our own public galleries.

London through a lens: a visual poem

Film and broadcast production Anyone studying a media, art or design-related subject at A level / BTEC or equivalent.

Working in two groups, film students will get a taste of planning and making a visual film. Sessions include workshops on shot planning, storyboarding, shooting on a DSLR (digital) camera and editing as well as a film shoot on location in the city. At the end of the week your film will be screened in a special exhibition in our own public galleries.

Street photography Photography, fine art Those studying at least one art or design-related subject at A level / BTEC or equivalent.

You will build on your photography skills with hands-on studio sessions before heading out into one of the most exciting and fashionable areas of London to test out your skills in a range of locations. At the end of the week you’ll present your photos in a special exhibition in our own public galleries.

Street style Fashion design Those studying at least one art or design-related subject at A level / BTEC or equivalent.

Taking inspiration from the sights, sounds and materials of the city streets, you’ll be working with a top fashion designer on your own cutting-edge creations to tell a story about London and its people. You’ll present your creations in a special exhibition in our own public galleries.

Urban sketching Fine art, design, illustration Those studying at least one art or design-related subject at A level / BTEC or equivalent.

This course aims to develop your sketching skills in response to architecture, space, light, texture and movement of figures. You’ll work across a variety of different settings and drawing materials, and be taken off-site to London’s streets and introduced to exciting new ways of recording and describing your physical and emotional response to your surroundings. We’ll be introducing you to colour theory, working with perspective, mark making, composition and how to use figures effectively to convey scale and atmosphere. At the end of the week you’ll present your work in a special exhibition in our own public galleries.

Painting Fine art, illustration Those studying at least one art or design-related subject at A level / BTEC or equivalent.

This five-day course begins with basic guidelines on how to set up a painting studio and select equipment and materials. We’ll be looking at drawing with paint and creating different atmospheric effects. We’ll also be investigating the material properties of paint, to discover how paint can influence your ideas as much as your ideas control the paint. You’ll be exploring a range of painters who create unique objects that communicate to us viscerally using paint.
