Setting up your Music Video project in Adobe Premiere Pro

Use these instructions to ensure you are setting up your project correctly in Premiere Pro; otherwise your footage will not look how it should.

REMEMBER:When you start to edit, always think of the big picture first

before you go on to the small detail. If you obsess about getting a particular shot or transition absolutely right before you've got a rough edit in order, you may end up running out of time!

Always start with a rough cut of how you want your video to look and then fine-tune it after your teachers have checked it.

1. When you have opened up Adobe Premiere Pro, you will see the box appear. Click New Project.

2. The next box will come up and this is where you will need to Name your project – E.g: Miss B’s Music Video.

3. You will also need to save your project in the correct location.

4. Click Browse next to the Location tab and save your project in to one of your group member’s folders on the Media Drive. E.g.: Media Drive > 11C > Sarah Jane > Year 11 Controlled Assessment > Year 11 Music Video.

Once you have entered your project name and hit ok, the Sequence Settings box will then appear. As you will be filming your footage in the setting of 1080p 50, the setting that you will need to choose will be: AVCHD 1080p50.

5. Don’t panic if you’ve selected the wrong setting! Fortunately, Premiere Pro will know if you have selected the wrong setting when you drag your footage in to the timeline as this box will appear:

If this appears, then you MUST select Change Sequence Settings.

6. Now that you have your project set up, Premiere Pro will look like this:

7. Now you will need to import your footage. To do so, open up the folder on the Media Drive that contains all of your footage, select all of the clips you wish to import and then drag them in to this box.

8. All of your selected footage will now appear in the box on the bottom left hand side. You should re-name your clips, as this will make it easier for you to know what each one contains.

9. To play and check a clip, double click on it and it will appear in the Preview window. Go through and check all of your clips to make sure they look ok before you start editing.

10. To start your edit you can either select the whole clip or part of a clip. To select part of a clip, double click on it and then set an IN (I) and OUT (O) point for wherere you want your clip to begin and end. I and O are the keyboard shortcuts for selecting the clip – this will make your life easier!

11. Once you’ve selected your IN and OUT point, the preview clip will look like this:

12. Then drag the clip to the timeline, ensuring that the video appears on Video track 1 and audio appears on Audio track 1. (Don’t worry – you can get rid of any audio from the footage later):

13. To see what your footage looks like directly from the sequence, click on the sequence and it will appear in the Program Monitor on the top right.

14.MAKE SURE TO REMEMBER TO SAVE YOUR WORK EVERY 10 MINUTES! THIS IS VITAL otherwise you may lose all of your hard work!FILE > SAVE (or click SAVE AS to change the location of where you would like to save it)

15. When making a music video, your audio track MUST be on your sequence from the moment you start editing. This will help you to lip synch correctly and make sure everything is cutting to the beat or on the correct lyrics.

16. To import your audio, you do this in the exact same way you imported your footage.

17. Your imported track will look like this once you click on it:

18. Drag your music to Audio Track 2 (If you need help editing your track or shortening it, ask Miss)

19. Your Music track should be on a separate track to the audio from your video footage so that you can keep any diegetic sound from the footage if needed.
