Year 11 Exams Revision Guide
2016
This guide is intended to provide you with the information needed in order to prepare you for
your Year 11 examinations. Make sure that you check the revision tips, that you have your
Mock exam timetable and that you get enough revision in during the weeks and months ahead. Examination Tips:
- Make sure you have your exam timetable
- Make sure you know what topics you need to revise
- Check you have asked your teacher for a list of exactly which topics will be included in the
examination
- Check that you know the layout of the examination How should I revise?
Good preparation is the key to exam success.
Use mind maps to help you condense your notes
Revise with a friend if this helps you.
Use past papers and revision guides to go over sample or past questions
Attend as many revision sessions as possible
Ask your teacher for help if you don’t understand anything or need further
explanation
Make a revision timetable (a useful website to help with this is www.getrevising.com)
Revise in small chunks of time and build in regular breaks.
This question is the most straightforward. You’ll be asked to either:
Identify facts or opinions
Write down things you learn about from the text
Select specific words to show you have understood the question
Practice reading non-fiction texts (newspapers, magazines, blogs, leaflets)
Pick out the main points – you could discuss them with a friend or relative
For the summary questions you need to show that you can:
Pick out the relevant information from the text
Put the words in the text into your own words
Practice reading non-fiction texts (newspapers, magazines, blogs, leaflets)
Identify the main points in them
Rephrase those points into your own words
In one of the questions, you will be asked to explain how the presentational devices effect the reader; you’ll need to
show that you can:
Focus on what the presentational devices make the reader think
Explain how presentational devices create an impression on the reader
Make a revision card with all of the presentational devices – colour, images (photographs, drawings, cartoons,
arrows etc), font, size of font, position of text and images, layout, size of images compared to font and writing.
One of the questions will ask you to discuss the language that the writer uses; you will need to show that you can:
Identify the most appropriate quotations to support your idea
Write clearly, explaining how the quotations you have chosen achieve the effect the writer wanted
Read a range of non-fiction texts and decide what their purpose is
Highlight or underline the words or phrases that help the writer to achieve that purpose
Try to explain what it is about the words or phrases that do that
You will get a choice of two questions – choose the one that you think you have the most to write about or that you
are most interested in.
You will be assessed on:
How relevant what you write is – does it show that you have understood the task?
Imaginative and interesting vocabulary
Varied sentences – to create specific effects on the reader
Paragraphs
A full range of punctuation
Clearly organised structure – an engaging beginning, a detailed middle and clear, controlled ending
Accurate use of capital letters and spelling
Practice writing under timed conditions
Revise the rules for punctuation – look them up if you are unclear
Create revision cards that have synonyms (words that mean the same thing) for some of the following
commonly overused words:
said, nice, boring, dark, happy, sad, like
Check the spelling corrections in your books and practice ones that you know you often get wrong
Mathematics
Exam Type – AQA 4365 Linear Mathematics Importance – Is this exam important? YES, incredibly! Results will be used for set changes and support decisions with the tier of entry (Higher or Foundation). The results for the mock exams are very good predictors of final grade. For example if you are aiming for an A* in your GCSE at the end of year 11, you should be achieving that or very close to achieving that in the mock examination. Length of Exam
Length of Exam
Higher Paper 1 1 hour 30 minutes 70 marks Higher Paper 2 2 hours 105 marks

Art and Design (AQA)
Pupils will sit a mini GCSE final examination for their mock exam. The paper was provided to all pupils at the end of the last half term. It is exactly the same as the full GCSE which will be given in the new year. There are 4 exam titles which pupils are working on in lesson time with individual tasks being set each week. Pupils should be attending after school sessions each week. The externally set GCSE (in April/May 2016) examination for art and design is given to the pupils
at the end of January 2016. There will be a choice of titles available for the boys to work from.
They will have approximately 20 hours of lesson preparation time to discuss, develop and practice
the techniques they would like to use.
They will sit a 10 hour examination split over two days. They can only take into the examination
work they have produced in lesson time. At the end of the examination all work is handed in for
moderation and cannot be adapted, changed or modified in any way. All coursework is also
submitted for marking.
All the work is displayed for an external moderator’s visit where the marks are checked and
submitted.
The final mark is made up of 60% coursework and 40% externally set examination.
The pupils will each receive their own examination paper and we strongly recommend that they
visit galleries or look at virtual gallery tours on line to research the topics and suggested artists.
Collecting information in a sketchbook and doing drawings each day will provide evidence of
independent thinking and generate a variety of different starting points.
