These are comments from some of our Young Carers in Somerset. “I’m Claire and I am twelve. I belong to a group called Young Carers. A lot of people don’t understand what a Young Carer is, what they have to do, and the responsibilities they have to undertake.” “I get to spend time with my brother, to help someone I love… sometimes I get angry.” “My mum’s not well. I go to school and do all the normal stuff, but when I get home I have to help get tea ready for me, mum and dad, every night. I have to help with the housework all the time. It’s hard to fit it all in.” “I worry about my mum when I’m not with her. It’s hard to focus at school sometimes.” “I don’t go out with my mates because I worry about leaving my mum on her own.” “I help my mum get washed and dressed in the morning. I wouldn’t want anyone else to help her; I know I do it properly.” “It’s just me and my dad. He’s disabled, so I have to do all the housework. I like to do it, but I get very tired.” “Somerset Young Carers Project, I feel like they’re the carers for us.” For more information, please contact a Young Carers Team Leader for a discussion, or Somerset Direct on 0300 123 2224. The project works with children and young people living in Somerset who have regular caring responsibilities for another person. This could be a parent, grandparent, brother, sister or other relative. The length of time you are supported will depend on the amount of care you provide and how this affects you.

Care may be needed for the relative because they have:

A disability Poor physical health Poor mental health An addiction to alcohol or other

substances

Caring could mean: Doing extra jobs around the house Cooking and preparing meals Helping with medicines Helping to make sure someone is safe Checking to see someone is happy Fetching and carrying Lifting equipment Helping someone move about Helping someone get washed or

dressed Helping with childcare Shopping Organising money or appointments Translating or signing

Children first, Carers second

Some of the things the project can offer you
