You Are What You Read is part of Scholastics global literacy

campaign, Read Every Day. Lead a Better Life. The social networking

site around books celebrates the great reads of our lives. Everyone

is invited to join this global community to discuss the books that

have influenced our lives. Teachers, parents and students there is a

separate community for kids - are invited to submit the five book titles

that have helped shape who they are, what we call your bookprint.

Share these great reads with fellow book lovers, discover new titles,

and access a live feed of comments, reviews, and the latest book news

on You Are What You Read at www.youarewhatyouread.com .

Also included in this guide: a Sample Letter for Parents, to let them

know about this program and how they may support your classroom

    activities at home.

    Younger children want to

    learn to read! Help them

    stay excited about books.

    Surround them with a

    good mix of picture books

and chapter books. Givethem plenty of time to

    read, turn the pages, and

    enjoy the illustrations.

    Then ask them:

    What do you like about

    the book that you are

    reading right now?

    Is it funny?

    Does it have sillypictures?

What is it about the book

    that makes you smile?

    Give each child an

    opportunity to explain

    what it is about the

book that he or she will

    remember tomorrow. Set

aside time each week forthe children to talk about

    the books they enjoy and

    remember.

    BestBooks BooksWithin

    ReachPassit On

    Within the You Are What

    You Read web site (www.

    youarewhatyouread.com/

kids), students can selecttheir own bookprints

    the five books that have

    special meanings for them.

    Once your students have

    selected their bookprints,

    have them trace their hand

    onto a piece of colored

    construction paper. Have

    them cutout the hand

    shape. In each finger of

    their cutouts, students

    can write a book title.

    Identify each students

    hand, and hang them on

    the classroom wall to keep

    good books within reach.

    Good books are often

    passed on from friend to

    friend. But how do you

    know what kind of books

your friend likes to read?By asking questions.

    Working in pairs,

    have each student ask

    his partner a series of

    questions about what kind

of books he or she likes.

    After the students have

    answered the questions

    about the kinds of books

    they like, have the partners

    comb the library shelves in

    search of the right book.

    Later, give the children

    a chance to give their

    impressions of the book

    that was recommended to

    them. Was it something

    they would recommend to

    someone else?

Bookprints Tell Your StoryA bookprint is the mark that a book leaves on our

lives, shaping who we are and who we become.

As described by Dr. Alfred Tatum, professor at the

University of Illinois-Chicago, our textual lineage is

a reading and writing autobiography, which shows

that who you are is in part developed through

the stories and information youve experienced.

Once your students have created their bookprints

in the You Are What Your Readsite (www.

youarewhatyouread.com/kids), give them achance to explain to the class what is special about

each of the books that they chose.

Call for BookprintsWithin the You Are What You Readweb site

    (www.youarewhatyouread.com/kids), students

can select their own bookprints the five books

that are most special to them. Once your students

have shared their bookprints with the rest of the

class, they can find out the bookprints of their

families and friends outside the classroom. For

example, ask students to find out the five books

that have special meaning for their parents or

caregivers. They can record the information, then report it to the class. Ask students to make

observations about their findings. What kinds of

books are popular? What are some of the most

    popular titles?

T hree ThingsKnowing which books other

    students have loved, and why,

    is the best recommendation for

what a student might chose to

    read next. Invite your students

    to expand on their bookprint.

    Have them each write the

name of the books they love

and three things that they liked

about each book. Have theclass work together to publish

    a newsletter. Distribute it to

other classes, or post it on your

school web site.USE THE SHEET (PDF) BELOW TOHELP STUDENTS SHARE THEIRTHOUGHTS ABOUT THE BOOKSTHAT ARE IMPORTANT TO THEM.

Share a PageSometimes, just a single

    passage from a great book

    can be so entertaining, so

    humorous, or exciting, that

it sums up the whole book.

    Have your students select

a passage from one of their

    favorite books to share with

the rest of the class. Have

    each student read out loud

from the text. The rest of the

class can decide if what theyheard was intriguing enough

to make them want to read

    the book.
