Coming this fall: Open Studio Tour

October 11 and 12, 10:00AM—5:00PM

Save the lovely falls days of Oct. 11 & 12 to drive around the painted hills and visit more than 15 artists working in their studios. Lyle Conrad is heading up an Open Studio tour,

sponsored by YCAC. If you are an artist who wishes to participate, please contact him ASAP

at (607) 868-4673, or [email protected]. Provide one picture of your work, a brief art-ist’s statement, and directions to your studio. Each participating artist will contribute $30 to the cost of printing and distributing the map /

YCAC Expresses Appreciation Thanks to all the generous patrons who are supporting the first Finger Lakes Chamber Music Festival, and especially to Dr. Stephen and Elise Rosenfeld for opening their home for the Patrons’ Concert. Thanks to Bluff View Catering, Jane Smith, for the Patrons’ Concert refreshments, which she donated. Thanks to Hunt Country Vineyards for donating the wine for the entire Chamber Music series. The Board wishes to express gratitude to an anonymous donor who was presented YCAC $1000 to use at our discre-tion. Among other things, this will allow us to present sev-eral children’s workshops this summer at a nominal fee, and to offer scholarships where needed. We appreciate the generosity of the James P. Gordon Trust, which has donated $1500 to pay for the children’s concert in the Chamber Music Festival, to be held this year for the children at Camp Cory. Thanks to more than a dozen artists who submitted propos-als for placement of art in the public buildings of Yates County. A thousand thank-yous to Sandy Cline for building and maintaining our website.

Attic Art Sale Again—a reminder—the Attic Art Sale is August 1 & 2 and we are looking forward to your contributions to make this our most successful sale. Remember, proceeds from this sale support YCAC’s Community Arts Grants, available to all ages and groups in Yates County. In the past we have sent women to the Memorial Art Gallery for their first museum experience, provided cameras for students studying Ansel Adams, sup-ported the student-organized band at Keuka College, gave pottery classes to seniors, and more, all from

Fine Arts & Wines, Aug. 16 & 17, at Hunt

Country, Heron Hill, and Dr. Frank’s.

ARTISTS: Are you interested in donating the use of a piece of

your artwork for our annual holiday card fundraiser? If you would like to submit your work for considera-tion, call Beverly Oben at 315-536-8629 by August

A Rake in the Aisles of Guinness Country by Robert Darling I will arise and go now, and go where Guinness is free, And queue there with the tourists, and not regret the wait; Nine graced years have I gone there, for I am always thirsty For pleasures of St. James’s Gate. And I shall have some slurps there, for foam comes dripping slow, Dripping from the taps of the brewer to where my dry mouth gapes; There liquid’s dark as midnight, and the world is soon aglow, My glass refilled, and not a drop escapes. I would arise and go now, if only I could rise, But I lie under spigots hoping they will pour Just one more pint or gallon, like manna from the skies, From God to Guinness to this floor.

YCAC Board member and poet Dr. Robert Darling will sign copies of his latest book at the recep-tion for artists, July 11, 5:00-7:00 PM at The Gallery. The poem above is appropriate for the occa-sion: Bob will leave the next day for his annual trip to beloved “Guinness Country”.

Painters’ Corner by Curt Wright As we discussed in the last letter, I use five disciplines that a subject must possess. They are: 1. Subject - Is this really what you want to paint and can you establish a bond with the subject? 2. Composition – Can I manipulate the objects to create proper form? In some cases back to the snap-

shots, taking pieces of more than one picture to help create the composition. Sketching units within the subject area, making Xerox copies of various sizes to prearrange in your sketch, e.g. arranging boats in seascapes.

3. Sketch – Can I actually draw the subject…..Work within your limits! Sometimes it is great to expand past your capabilities, although usually just pushing your boundaries will work.

4. Light Source – Is there a good light source and can it be enhanced? 5. Values – Will the work be able to have the range of depth that helps with the overall composition.

For this newsletter I will take you through my process for establishing values.. The other four disciplines will be addressed in future newsletters.

So here goes -- I try to establish a range of values that tie in shapes as well as tone. Can I make all work together? The large shapes lead the way to composition with the use of light and dark areas. I begin the sketching process with pencil and char-coal, showing only my important areas of light and dark. As you draw, from time to time, set aside your work and view at a dis-tance squinting your eyes to see the shapes and range of value you plan on using. Once satisfied with the tone you can sketch another final drawing showing other information useful for the painting. Remember the canvas at this point must be the proper size (Golden Rule) and contain the other four requirements.

Notice to all organists and music lovers: An invitation to take part in a con-cert on the new Schantz pipe organ at the First Presbyterian Church of Penn Yan on Thursday, August 14, at 7:00 p.m. This is a volunteer concert with each or-ganist choosing a selection or two to play which could range from a Bach toccata to a hymn. Rochester Folk Art Guild to Host Ensemble Resonance Summer

Chamber Music The Rochester Folk Art Guild will present the world-class chamber sextet ‘Ensemble Resonance’ in a unique series of musical events – titled “Making Music Together: A Glimpse Behind the Scenes” – at its concert hall in Middlesex in July. What makes these performances unique is that they will showcase some of the ways music is arranged, rehearsed and performed within a small instrumental ensemble, and provide opportunities for audience interaction with the musicians. Each event will include six musicians and comprise a mixture of rehearsal, performance, dialog between audience and musicians, and participation together in rhythmic and improvisatory experiments.
