School Strengths Why is Yass High School a good place at which to learn and work? There are many ways that question could be answered but I think two important ingredients of Yass High‟s success are its connection with the local community and the quality of its teaching staff. Connections to the local community were in evidence on the weekend when the school band, under the direction of Mr David Greenwood, performed at the Anzac Day ceremony at the Memorial Hall and school leaders joined the march down Comur Street. Just last week, I read on assembly a letter from the local Red Cross thanking students and organising teacher, Ms Jenny Rajchert, for their assistance in raising money via the Red Cross Doorknock. Caitlin Nelson represented not only her school but her community and local Lions Club when she won the zone final of the Lions Youth of the Year and was runner up at the district competition in Canberra last month. The quality of teaching staff was on display at our School Development Day last Friday. Yass High is an acknowledged leader in the district as far as computer network services and the lap top program goes. This is due in large part to the efforts of Mr Rod Saville who has implemented a very effective program to train staff and students in making the most of the new opportunities that technology brings. Mr Saville lead staff through a number of activities on the day including a self assessment tool which helps staff identify their own strengths and weaknesses and an enjoyable game to show the potential of mixing group work and computer presentations. Mr Saville and Technical Support Officer Sam Columb will be working hard over the next few weeks as they distribute laptops to students in Year 9 and support teachers in using them effectively in the classroom. Another valuable staff member was working hard throughout School Development Day. Ms Tracey Bills has run first aid and CPR sessions training local teachers for years and Friday was no exception. Tracey‟s expert knowledge and calm, good-humoured manner make these sessions both informative and enjoyable. Teachers are grateful that their skills in assessing and dealing with accidents and emergencies have been enhanced. As Tracey says, these are skills which we practise hoping that we never have to use them but there is no doubt the school is a safer place as a result of our training. Also on School Development Day, head teachers ran sessions for their faculties on topics such as reporting and assessment. It was a successful day and staff enjoyed the catering of Ms Barlett and Year 11 Extension Maths who cooked and presented morning tea and lunch as a fund-raiser for their excursion to Melbourne later in the year. School Strengths

Why is Yass High School a good place at which to learn and work? There are many ways that question could be answered but I think two important ingredients of Yass High‟s success are its connection with the local community and the quality of its teaching staff. Connections to the local community were in evidence on the weekend when the school band, under the direction of Mr David Greenwood, performed at the Anzac Day ceremony at the Memorial Hall and school leaders joined the march down Comur Street. Positive Uniform

Students are able to receive acknowledgment that they wear the school uniform with pride on school reports. In order to do this, they must consistently wear the top level of uniform – „perfect‟. For girls this means a school T shirt or white collared T shirt, navy jumper if cold (a coloured coat can give extra warmth if needed), plain navy shorts, skirt or trousers and solid covered shoes (which would give protection in a practical area). The solid covered shoes (not canvas volleys) are essential for all junior students and those seniors who take practical courses: art, science, food tech, metal work or construction. Boys must wear plain grey shorts or trousers. The school sport T shirt and representative jumpers can be worn on sports day (Wednesdays for seniors, including Year 12 and Thursdays for juniors). Students who wear the second level of uniform – „acceptable‟ – are on the right track but can still improve their appearance. They wear the school colours but their clothing may include logos, stripes or checks. White T shirts may not have collars and students may wear sports uniform on days other than their official sports day. We encourage these students to work towards perfect uniform. The final category is „out of uniform‟ and these students need to consider how they can show more respect for and pride in their school. They will find themselves unable to represent the school at sporting or cultural excursions until their uniform improves.

School Jumpers

Samples of hooded school jumpers are arriving in the school this week and we hope to have them available for students to try on for size very soon. The jumpers will include a school crest and will sell for $30. We hope they will arrive in time for the worst of the winter weather. Students are asked to bring a note from home if they need to wear a jumper of the wrong colour while they are waiting for the school jumpers to arrive.

Bringing lunch to school

Students and parents are reminded of the importance of a good lunch to help ensure a healthy mind and body. Students who forget or do not bring their lunch to school may see Ms Pinson who will arrange a simple lunch of sandwiches and a drink from the canteen. Parents can send in money to cover this the next day. Parents will be rung if this situation reoccurs.

Many ‘Y’ Awards Won

Each week on assembly, a name is drawn from the box containing all the „Y‟ awards earned by students in the previous week. One lucky student wins a canteen voucher and all students are considered for inclusion in an excursion later in the year. Mrs Rayner‟s Maths class is keeping a record of students receiving Ys and teachers giving them and they share the latest data each assembly.

Canteen News

The canteen had to replace an oven recently. Thanks to Retravision for a good deal and to Howard Stacey who installed it for free. We appreciate the support of local businesses and tradesmen. It has been great to welcome some new volunteers to the canteen recently but we are keen for more new faces. If you are a parent, grandparent or carer with a little spare time, please get in touch with Lyndall or Anne on the school phone number. The Canteen committee met recently and it was announced that $10,000 has been given to the school for teaching and learning resources. Thank you to all for supporting our school canteen.

Who wins the Apple Ipads

THE ANSWER CONTINUES TO ELUDE US ALL……..while we wait for ALL students to finalise their sponsorship pledges. What we do know…………OVER $8000 has been collected so far. Congratulations to the whole school community. Without your generous support the Breakfast Club would not be able to continue. With the colder months now upon us it is more important than ever to further support the opportunity for all students to begin their school day with a hot chocolate before class begins. The Apple Ipads are now due for release in Australia sometime in May. It won‟t be too long now before the winners are announced.

BBQ for Brekky

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, all Yass High School students are invited to enjoy and benefit from breakfast at school. In fact, most mornings your little Brekky Club is visited by almost 200 students. Mmm, one may think ……….. not so little. Of course financial support is the key to continuing the Brekky Club and the combined spirit of all students ensure this is achieved, but the energy comes from its volunteers. The commitment they show daily to support the Brekky Club is truly outstanding.

Without promises of rewards or recognition, a 30 strong group of volunteers dedicate their time happily to the daily operation of the Brekky Club. Incredibly, many begin their day at 7am but all give with their heart, from set up to packing up, from serve up to clean up. On Tuesday 27th March, it was an absolute pleasure to invite each volunteer to a celebratory BBQ; a BBQ to celebrate their commitment to keeping our Brekky Club strong and successful. You are an amazing group of students. Often not having the opportunity to gather as a dedicated group,

the BBQ was a great opportunity for each volunteer to gain a greater understanding of the larger network in which they volunteer. If only we could just say a THANK YOU big enough to really show our appreciation.

How do you use Mathematics in your career?

In the 19th century the mathematics used in most careers, and daily life was very obvious. For example, in shopping the shopper and shopkeeper both used mathematics in a visible way using hand written calculation. To make most purchases, only primary level mathematics was needed. In the 20th century, mathematics became both more prevalent in careers, but also hidden. Again, using shopping as an example, adding machines and cash registers meant that the mathematics needed for the purchase to occur was a higher level, but the people making the purchases may not have been aware of the mathematics needed. Now in shopping, the shopper can scan the objects and uses a piece of plastic to make the purchases. For an observer little or no mathematics is obvious, yet for the purchase to occur postgraduate university mathematics is needed to ensure the scanner is accurate and the use of the plastic card is secure. For many secondary school students, the relevance of mathematics is hidden and the question becomes “When will I use this?” The Maths faculty would like the support of the community in providing seminars for students on how mathematics is used in careers and community. If you use mathematics in your career and would like to share that information with students, please contact Mrs Bartlett at Yass HS on 6226 1711 for further information.

How good are you at Maths?

Indulge in mind exercises by entering the Australian Mathematics Competition

Students from Yass HS are invited to enter this prestigious international competition. Students at Yass HS have achieved excellent results in this competition each year, including Prizes, High Distinctions and Distinctions. Students compete against other students in their year group. The competition is conducted at Yass High School on Thursday 5 August 2010 during school time. All students receive a detailed report showing how they went on each problem, with comparisons as to wider statistics. Students also receive a certificate or award commensurate with their performance. The AMC provides the student an extra opportunity for external recognition. The certificates are often kept by students for their folios. They are well understood by employers and so can be used as evidence of problem solving ability. Sample and practice questions are available at http://www.amt.edu.au/wuamc.html . Entry forms for all competitions are available from teachers and the front office, notes and money are due to the front office by Friday 7 May 2010.

Year 8 Agriculture Excursion to Bookham

Mr Armour‟s Year 8 travelled to Bookham for a day‟s excursion on the property “Glenrock” owned by Mr and Mrs Tony and Louise Armour. The purpose of the trip was to look at what happens on a typical Yass area farm and to collect information for a project to be assessed as part of the course. We began the day looking around the Homestead area and noting the buildings and equipment there. We soon proceeded out along a farm track towards a large wash-away gully that has been extensively planted with trees to correct erosion damage. A lot of fun was had climbing around the extensive gully.

After a morning break beside the track we joined Tony Armour and assisted in drenching some 150 two-tooth merino wethers. This was a job that the whole class threw themselves into and before long they had demonstrated their skill in yard work as well as drenching.

After drenching we headed out further into the farm and left our bus to climb Bald Hill which is a large hill in the centre of the farm. It took about a half hour to climb but the view was well worth the effort giving

a very good idea of the extent of the farm and the surrounding country. We had lunch at the top before walking back to the bus.

After this we visited the shearing shed and looked at the old sheep dip before boarding the bus back to Yass.

Mr Hall shows the class how the frozen semen is thawed prior to insemination

Year 9 Agriculture Artificial Insemination Day

As part of their Prime Lamb Unit, Year 9 Agriculture class have been taking part in the Synchronization and Insemination of the school‟s stud ewes. This involved understanding and applying their knowledge of hormones in female reproduction to have all the ewes ovulate on the same day (synchronization) and then at the correct time have them inseminated artificially.

Kaitlyn Pack is seen in the picture above delivering the dose of ram semen into one of our ewes while Mr John Hall of Livestock Breeding Services, Yass, looks into the ewe via a laparoscope to guide the delivery into the fallopian tube of the ewe. Picture in the background is Mr. Frank Grace, president of Yass Show Society, who kindly allowed the school to use the shearing shed at the Showgrounds for their task. At the time of printing 9 out of the 10 ewes inseminated for the school had fallen

pregnant as a result of the day‟s work and the students are looking forward to a high percentage of lambs in late August when they are due to give birth.

Yass High Show Team Completes Successful Autumn Program

The school‟s show cattle team began their year in January preparing two heifers and a bull for the show circuit in Term 1. Mr Glyn Williams bred the cattle from Newton-Wood Limousin Stud in Murrumbateman and was invaluable for his help through the season both giving advice and practical support to the students.

Competing in the Open Handlers classes, Tom McLucas (3rd), Kellie Armour (5th) and Joe Whiting (Encouragement) all performed well against quite a strong field of experienced competitors. In the cattle classes we were also very successful gaining ribbons for both heifers and our bull.

After the Canberra Royal the team competed at Yass Show where again the cattle did very well. A feature of the Yass Show was that some younger members of the team did well in their first show. Rachel McLucas was the winner of the best novice parader on the day, her brother Tom came third in the 17+ years category, Joe Whiting came third in the 14-15 years with Kellie Armour 4th, and Kristy Hansen and Caitlin Farmer also gained valuable first time experience in the show ring.

Support Talk

Yass Show The Support Unit students supported the show by entering art and cooking into the competitions. All students were recognised for the high standard of work. James DeMester came first for his Rainbow Fish painting and Daniel Anderson second for his Eagle. The class did their art with Ms Webbe after visiting the National Art gallery.

Excursions Mountain Trails On the last Wednesday of last term the support unit and aboriginal students went on an excursion to Mountain Trails. Mountain Trails is on Doctors Flat Road, Wee Jasper. The students were able to use the large trampoline, table tennis, basketball and football equipment. At 12 o‟clock the students were taken by the Mountain Trails staff for archery. All the students did very well and a competition was held amongst the students and staff. Sarah Davison hit the Bulls Eye 3 times winning the competition. Daniel Anderson and Jacob Davidson were very close behind. All the students had a wonderful time and were sad when the day came to an end.

Mulloon Creek Wednesday 22nd April the Support Unit joined Year 12 Geography on a field trip to Mulloon Creek. Mulloon Creek is owned by Tony Coote and is run as a biodynamic, organic farm. The ANU is also involved with the property testing Peter Andrew‟s work in Natural Sequence farming. The group did a 2km walk along the creek to see the various stages of the regeneration of the property. Both groups of students will be using the information from this day to complete curriculum outcomes.

Year 9 Students start learning with their new laptops

Yass High School students received their laptops from the Digital Education Revolution this week along with training on their care, connecting to the school's online learning centre, safety online, and guidelines for the "Laptop Learning Environment". All teachers expect students to bring their laptops to class every day fully charged and ready to learn. Teachers said they had been preparing "laptop wraps", lessons designed specifically for the laptops and presented online through the Yass High School Online Learning Centre to enhance the learning in all subject areas. All teachers have been receiving professional learning in using the laptops in their classrooms and many have had the use of laptops since last year to develop innovative lessons to use the laptops across the curriculum. Technical Support Officer, Sam Columb said that the new laptops had some improvements from the models last year with larger keyboards, better battery conservation and better quality screens. He has been busy commissioning the laptops to bring them to a state ready to begin learning straight away as soon as students receive them. Each laptop is noted in a database and linked to a year 9 student to trace usage and improve security. Most of the school, except for the demountables are covered by the wireless network with additional access points to be installed soon. A survey of the needs for the demountables has been carried out before the holidays and installation is expected by June. Parents who signed and returned the Laptop User Agreement should discuss with their children the implications of breaches, damage or loss of the laptop, and its use within the school values of respect, responsibility, safety and learning. They can find out more about the Digital Education Revolution at https://www.det.nsw.edu.au/strat_direction/schools/dernsw/index.htm

Big effort and no disgrace for our Open Soccer Boys At a sunny morning at Walker Park the big boys took on Crookwell. Yass started the game ready for a big game and very quickly took it up to the opposition. The backline had plenty of work to do as Crookwell came back at us just as hard. Many thanks to our goal keepers Mungo Bright and Tom Pinson who showed true courage putting their bodies on the line, showing a real display of athleticism by continually saving countless goals totally frustrating the opposition. Unfortunately, Crookwell eventually found the net but not without Yass doing our uttermost best to keep them out. It would be hard to pick the best player on the day, for me all our boys are heroes and I‟m proud of you all for giving your 100% and glad to have been a little part of it. Crookwell 3 - Yass 1. Big thanks to Anthony Gallagher for setting up the field and Alex Rose and David Pinson for refereeing the game.

Yass young guns star in Braidwood The first round game for the Yass High School 15‟s and under Soccer boys against Braidwood was the best start to the competition we have had in a long time. All our boys were pumped up ready to rumble and after 4 minutes of continual attack Aidan mega star Lees put the first goal away for us. A minute later he received a gem of a pass from James who can Byrne and scored our second. Has Yass has got talent? You bet we have. The Braidwood boys were stunned and pulled back more defence. The first half saw most of the play down on their side mostly due to the defence of Ben all star Wylie, Richard the kid Alley, Luke the knight Southwell, angry Angus and Jai the boy Tarzan Smith. Our halves were brilliant also, Adam the brave Minary-Bland, hard utility Shane Bingley, Hayden future Starr, all rounder Rex Stacey and Sam the man Young never stopped running the entire game. James and Aidan combined well again and this time James was the one to score. With little to do in goals Campbell Chalmers keen to get amongst it, reacted like a wild stallion when he moved to midfield in the second half. This helped keep everyone‟s energy levels up. Rex went to goalie did a fine job. JJ and wing man Brad Hazell had some excellent runs down the wing. All the young guns should be very proud of themselves. Two more goals came from Brad Hazell on the far post and you should have seen power play Jacob Davidson‟s mighty smash from just inside the box, what a beauty. The parents and coach who took the long drive in the rain were treated to an unforgettable game which will be in the record books. Final score 5-1. Congratulations boys and the best of luck against Trinity on the 5th May at home.

Open Girls and Boys Zone Basketball

On 24th February Open Girls and Boys Basketball teams travelled to Goulburn to play in the zone open basketball competition. The girl‟s first game was against Goulburn High School and our team matched the scoring with the talents of the state players from Goulburn but unfortunately Yass High lost. The Yass High team made Goulburn work hard and maintain their best side on the court. The remainder of the games were friendly matches. The boys play their first game against Karabar High School and played a very competitive and fast game. Yass High boys lost this game but will be a force to be reckoned with in the future. At big thank you to Michael Wilkinson for refereeing all our matches. We wish to thank the many parents for providing transport and their support during the day.

BRING HOME A BROTHER OR A SISTER

In June-July 2010, students, aged 15 – 18 years, from over 15 countries will be arriving in Australia to study at local schools for 3, 5 or 10 months. Opportunities exist to act as a host family in a volunteer/unpaid capacity. Hosting can be on a temporary, short or long term basis. Host families help provide our students with the chance to study and experience life in Australia. This is a great way to learn about another country and culture, establish a lifelong link to a family in another country and contribute to international goodwill. If your family can offer a friendly, supportive and caring home environment, contact us today. To learn more about this opportunity call Student Exchange Australia New Zealand on 1300 135 331 or visit our website: www.studentexchange.org.au

Seeking Volunteers

Southern Cross Cultural Exchange is seeking volunteer host families to host international exchange students arriving in July 2010 for a stay of 5 months. As in past years we would be grateful for your support by inserting the following information into your next school newsletter, or pinned to your noticeboard or website. We would appreciate any feedback or a copy of your newsletter if possible: YOU COULD LEARN A LOT FROM AN INTERNATIONAL BROTHER OR SISTER. Climate change? Further education? Cultural differences? Language? Study habits? Careers?

And what fun teaching him or her about Australian culture ! Capture the spirit of family and friendship by hosting an international exchange student from Southern Cross Cultural Exchange. Carefully selected students will arrive in July 2010 for 5 months from Europe and Scandinavia. They will attend a local secondary school, are fully insured and have their own spending money. If your family would like to have the opportunity to have a brother or sister from overseas for a semester, please call us now. CONTACT : 1800 500 501
