For obvious reasons, yard sales in general got off to an extremely slow start this summer, but they’ve picked up as summer has begun to turn into fall. Having so many on the same day no doubt helped attendance and also gave you the opportunity to safely catch up with friends and neighbours along your way. We came home with a few things and saw lots of people happily loading up their cars with treasures that found a second home, others were just happy to see some familiar faces as the quiet summer comes to a close.

Public Notice of Intent:

The Council of The Township of St. Joseph will consider a by-law to reduce the speed limit on the D Line between the 10th Sideroad and the Huron Line, and the F&G Line from HWY 548 to the A Line, from 80 km/h to 60 km/h at their meeting of September 16, 2020.

Any person wishing to comment should contact the Clerk Administrator at 705-246-2625 or email [email protected] before noon, Friday September 11th.

Even with the provided map, signs certainly helped find a few places

Cookie mask! - just one of the items we picked up. The epoxy coated picnic tables were tempting as well!

Harold Kent Celebrates at Age 95, with his Family Submitted by Arlene Kent-W

2020 is a milestone year for Harold Greydon Kent, born September 8, 1925. Due to covid restrictions, Harold celebrated his 95th year at a smaller family gathering than what was perhaps originally antici-pated for this landmark event.

In 1947, Har-old married (late) Edith Jane (Boyle) Kent (1928–2017) and bought Maple Ridge Farm, at 2704 A Line where he has lived all of his life. We all miss mom who is no longer there with him. Harold and (late) Edith’s five children, their partners and some of their 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren attended his 95th birth-day celebration. Harold’s family would like to share here their father’s life so far. They continue to aspire to their dad’s role model of a strong work ethic in business and community service.

Work and Business. Harold has worked in farm-ing, part-time for the phone company, owned and operated a construction company, and sustained a family maple syrup business.

Phone Company. Harold worked part time for the St. Joseph Island Municipal Telephone Company for 21 years until Bell Canada in 1967 took over buying out the local company on the Island.

Construction Business. Farming and working in construction was Harold’s main full time life work. Learning the construction business from his father Greydon, Harold got his tickets in plumbing and wiring and operated a construction company for 44 years; in later years his younger son Lynn joined him. Together they built and serviced many homes and cottages on the Island and North Shore, em-ploying several local Islanders in the construction business.

Maple Syrup Producer. Every spring for 80 years, beginning at the age of 14, Harold has been making maple syrup on Maple Ridge Farm. In 2019, Kent Bros. Maple Syrup celebrated 100 years (1919-2019). For 27 years Harold was a Director of the

Ontario Maple Syrup Producers’ Association (OMSPA) (1968-1994), making trips to Lindsay, Ontario for an-nual meetings. Harold served as President of OMSPA in those last few years.

Church & Community. Harold continues to be active in his church and community, whether on the island or in Florida where they used to spend their winters.

United Church Member & Choir Member. As a member of the Harmony/St Marks United Church, Harold attends the Sunday services faithfully (until Covid) and has been a member of the church choir for 48 years. Harold misses the social interaction of the choir rehearsals every Thursday night and church ser-vice on Sundays, but appreciates his granddaughter Jennifer’s visits who brings the church service up on her ipad so he can sing along to the hymns.

St. Joseph Island Plowing Match. Harold enjoys competing in the annual St. Joseph Island Plowing Match. He first competed many years ago, then was busy with his business for years, however in his 80s started to compete again. Although the plowing match is cancelled this year, Harold hopes to participate next year.

Winters in Florida. For about 37 years (1978-2015) Harold and Edith spent most of their retirement years going south for the winters to Florida. Harold often helped neighbours in their community park in Zepyrhills, with plumbing and electrical issues at no charge. A well-known fact to his family and commu-nity is that Harold can “fix anything”! Competing in shuffleboard tournaments in Florida; bridge and card games of any kind were social activities they enjoyed at any time of the year.

Oldest Chartered Member of the Legion, Branch 374. Not only did Harold turn 95 in September 2020, but this year marks 75 years that Harold has been a chartered member of the Royal Canadian Legion. Har-old has been the oldest chartered member of Branch 374 for some time. In addition to serving in many executives positions for the Legion (Treasurer for over twenty years, and a couple of terms as Secretary Treasurer and President), Harold has been active at annual events of Community Night and Syrup Festi-val weekends. Harold often did plumbing and wiring for the old and new Legion Halls, and worked in the kitchen. For about 25 years, Harold enjoyed being a Bingo caller. Over the years, Harold has received many awards and recognition from the Legion for his over and above service, contribution and dedication: Life membership, certificate of merit, 50-year club, and the 75-year club in June, 2020 (awards night deferred).

Longevity. Harold at age 95, continues to drive his own car, blow the snow out of his lane by tractor in the winter, and mow his lawn on his riding lawnmow-er in the summer
