Swings and roundaboutsWhile orders for yard cranes in Asia are down by half, demand in Europe, North America and Africa is growing once again, writes Benedict YoungThe table overleaf shows a total of 634 yard cranes on order for delivery in 2010 and beyond. Not unexpectedly, orders are down on the 2009 total of 994 and the current order books represent the lowest numbers since 2004 when 468 cranes were on order. This years survey was carried out three months later than in previous years so deliveries in the first half of 2010 have also been included. Cargo Systems approached 14 manufacturers for details of yard cranes on order. This year Hyundai Samho reports RTG cranes on order, representing its first yard cranes for several years. Paceco Espana and Mitsubishi Heavy Industry report that they currently have no yard cranes on order. Terex Port Equipment, comprising the former Fantuzzi Group, is known to have orders in hand for its yard cranes but the company has declined to take part in this survey because of a corporate policy not to divulge customer-specific information. This should be taken into account when making any year-on-year comparison of the data. The 634 cranes on order comprise 482 RTGs and 152 RMGs, both of which are slightly down on 2009. However, RMGs represent 31% of the total order books, up from around 25% in earlier years. Demand in China has softened, with a total of 99 units on order, down from 215 last year. Orders for elsewhere in Asia total 145 units, down from of 274 cranes last year, which was the all-time peak for the region. With 145 cranes on order for Europe, the region has seen a partial recovery in demand after a lull in 2009 when there were 135 units in the pipeline. North Americas growing appetite sees demand more than double to 39 units compared to just 16 last year, while order numbers in South America and the Caribbean remain virtually static at 49 units. The Middle East, Persian Gulf and Red Sea region sees demand fall back to 53 the same as 2007 levels down from the alltime peak of 91 units on order last year. Orders from Africa, meanwhile, have reached an all-time high of 91 units. ZPMC remains the leading manufacturer with 316 yard cranes on order. Notable customers include Hanjin Shippings new semi-automated Total Terminal International Algeciras in Spain, which will receive 32 RTGs. The Chinese supplier also has orders for 42 RMGs for operators at Koreas Busan Newport. Elsewhere in Asia, Doosan is fulfilling an order from PSA Singapore Terminals for 37 RTG. Konecranes order for 25 RTGs for the port of Savannah represents the majority of units on order in North America. The Finnish company also has orders for 20 RTGs for Malta Freeport and 12 for Haifa, Israel. The other major Finland-based company, Cargotec, will deliver 16 RTGs to Transnet Port Terminals in Cape Town as part of the reconfiguration and densification of the former straddle carrier facility. Cargotec also has an order from Hamburgs HHLA for 10 RMGs to service the newly automated Container Terminal Burchardkai, which is also adapting from a straddle operation.
