Principal’s News Welcome to Week 9 of Term 4 at Yanco Public School. The end of the year is rapidly approaching, with numerous official functions and end of year presentations taking place. STOP PRESS – STOP WORK MEETING TUESDAY As many of you may be aware from media reports, a stop-work meeting has been called by the NSW Teachers Federation to discuss the current salaries negotiations. This is planned to be held from 9.00 am to 11.00 am tomorrow, Tuesday 3 December 2013. The school will remain open, however; there will be changes to normal class structures during this time. Please see the letter to parents attached to this week’s newsletter for details. Light Up Leeton Yesterday evening students from K/1/2 and Years 3-6 performed two items at this year’s Light Up Leeton Community Concert. K/1/2 performed “12 Aussie days of Christmas”, while Years 3-6 performed ‘Aussie Jingle Bells.’ All staff were very proud of the efforts of the students and the outstanding performance skills demonstrated. The props created for the performance added to a wonderful, festive occasion and were appreciated by the audience. Well done to all who attended and gave up their time to represent the school in such a positive manner. Election of 2014 Captains The process of electing school captains for 2014 has commenced, with all Year 5 student sent home with a ‘captain’s package’ last week. This year students will have to address criteria for being a school captain and the expectations of fulfilling a role as a student leader at Yanco Public School. Next year the school captains will have the opportunity to attend the National Young leaders Conference in Sydney in March, while all Year 6 students will attend the GRIP Leadership Conference in Wagga Wagga in May. Students who are nominating for the position of school captain will present their school captain’s speeches at this week’s Primary Assembly on Friday, commencing at 12.30 pm. All parents are invited to attend. Year 6 Farewell The Year 6 farewell will be held at the Yanco All-servicemen’s Club next week, on Thursday, 12 December 2013. Invitations for the evening will be sent home with Year 6 students this week. Could I please ask that parents and caregivers please respond quickly with their RSVP so that final numbers and catering details can be finalised. School Reports Staff are busily finalising the Semester Two student reports. At this stage reports will be sent home with students next Wednesday, 11 December 2013. Parents are reminded that if they have any concerns after the have received their child’s report, please contact the school and make an appointment to discuss your child’s progress with their classroom teacher. Presentation Night The last major school function for 2013 will be school Presentation Night, which will be held on Tuesday, 17 December 2013. The format will remain unchanged from previous year’s Presentation Nights, with details going home to parents next week. LHS Orientation Day Last Wednesday Leeton High School held their Orientation Day, with all Year 6 students enrolled to attend Leeton High School in 2014 attending. Comments from the students were very positive, with many informing me that they had an enjoyable day and that the atmosphere was friendly and inviting. Thank you to the staff from Leeton High School, in particular Year 7 advisor for 2014 Nick Turner

and Principal Greg Horton, for organising a very beneficial day for our students. School Christmas Party On Friday, 13 December all students will have the opportunity to participate in the school Christmas party. I would like to thank the parents who have been busily organising the party, for the benefit of students. Details of the party will be sent home in next week’s newsletter. School Swimming A quick reminder to all parents and caregivers that the K-6 Swimming program continues this week, with all students and staff travelling to the Leeton Town Pool every afternoon from Monday to Thursday. All organisational details were in the permission note previously sent home with students. The program will continue until Thursday, 12 December 2013.At this stage more parent helpers are required to assist staff with implementing the program. If you can assist please contact the school on (02) 6955 7162. Proud and Deadly Awards The Leeton Aboriginal Educational Consultative Group (AECG) will host this year’s Proud and Deadly Awards at Parkview Public School this Wednesday, 4 December 2013 at 6.00 pm. A number of students at Yanco Public School will be receiving awards, as previously publicised in the school newsletter. I look forward to seeing members of the school community at the awards. Equity Funding In 2014 Yanco Public School will receive increased equity funds through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM) based on socio economic data and Indigenous students. The fourth in a series of information sheets on the reforms currently taking place within the NSW Department of Education and Communities is attached to this week’s newsletter. Please take the time to keep informed with the reforms currently underway, either by reading the information provided in the school newsletter of by visiting the department’s website at https://detwww.det.nsw.edu.au Primary Principals Association Meeting Last Friday I attended an area meeting of the NSW Primary Principal’s Association (NSWPPA). One of the major topics discussed is a plan by the NSW Department of Education and Communities to change the status of teaching principals of P6 and P5 schools, of which Yanco Public School (P5) is one. Hopefully, more details will be provided during the discussions concerning salaries negotiations. I will keep the community informed on the current debate with regular updates in the school newsletter. End of Year Activities As we work our way towards the end of the year numerous activities will take place. These include:

• Friday, 6 December 2013 – School Captains (2014) Speeches at school assembly

• Thursday, 12 December 2013 – Year 6 Farewell at Yanco All-Servicemen’s Club

• Friday, 13 December 2013 - School Christmas Party • Tuesday, 17 December 2013 – School Presentation Night

Sports Report School Swimming K-6 School Swimming will take place again this year, with the swimming program commencing this week. Students will travel by bus to the Leeton Town Pool each afternoon from Monday to Thursday during weeks 8, 9 and 10 of this term. Please ensure your child comes to school prepared for swimming. All students will require swimmers, a towel, their school hat and $2 for bus travel. Students may also bring a pair of thongs to wear to the pool and return. Please note that thongs are not to be worn to school. T20 Cricket Gala Day Due to changes in the PSSA calendar LNPSSA will now hold the Boy’s T20 Cricket Gala Day at the end of the year, for boys in Years 4 and 5 only. They may then be eligible for selection in the Riverina PSSA Cricket team when in Year 6 the following year. The T20 Cricket Gala Day will be held on Friday, 13 December and it has now been decided at a meeting that Small Schools will be not be sending a team. Students in Years 4 and 5 who would like to attend can contact Mr Allen. Aquatics Fun Day On the last day of Term 4, the last day for students, all students will travel to Yanco Agricultural High School for an Aquatics Fun Day at their pool. All students swimming ability will be tested during the K-6 Swimming Program and students will be required to wear a coloured wrist band indicating their swimming ability. Notes for the organisation will be sent home with students this week.

News from the Classrooms Year 5/6 Students in Year 5/6 have been busily banking class ‘reward’ money for positive behaviours in their Bank Books since the beginning of Term 3. On Friday, 13 December 2013, after the Christmas party, Year 5/6 students will participate in an auction of prizes, with students being able to purchase their prizes using the balance displayed in their bank book. Some fantastic prizes are up for grabs, including iTunes cards, comics, a netball, books, pens, magazines and numerous other items. This reward system has been a great opportunity for students to develop financial literacy skills which will assist them later in life.

__ P. and C. News School Raffle Fundraising The P & C have already commenced selling raffle tickets in this year’s end of year fundraising raffle. One book of tickets per family was sent home with students last week, with a number of students already selling their raffle book and requesting another. Tickets were also sold at the election booth at Yanco PS and during the P & C car wash. Please support this initiative as all funds are used to support activities at the school. This year the P & C have already: • Provided funds to install the wireless network in the classrooms • Provided funds to purchase $1,000 worth of additional reading

resources • Subsidised the cost of the K-6 excursion to Narrandera

School Uniform A reminder to all parents and cares that school uniform items are available from the school during office hours, Monday, Tuesday and Friday. We have been greatly encouraged by the number of students wearing new hats this summer
