未来をまっすぐに見据えた顔を表現しています。それはまた、個性を大切にした教育・研究を育む学問の芽であり、世界に向かって大きく開いていきます。シンボルカラーはピーコックグリーンと若葉色。自然をイメージさせるグリーンを基調として、大学の実直さと安心感を表現しています。

山口大学のシンボルマークの形とカラーリングをイメージした、「自由さ」「好奇心」「柔軟性」を持ったネコをモチーフとして作成されたキャラクターです。名前の「ミィ（Me）」には、「ヤマミィに、山口大学の「私（＝アイデンティティ）」を体現する存在になって欲しい」「学生の皆さんに、山口大学でそれぞれの「私」を発見して欲しい」という想いを込めています。

「地域から世界へ」―地域に貢献しつつ、世界に　　　　羽ばたく総合大学―

国立大学法人山口大学長

　山口大学は、９学部８研究科からなる学生数１万人を超える総合大学です。1815年に創設された私塾「山口講堂」が源流で、2015年に創基200周年を迎えました。明治維新を成し遂げた、チャレンジ精神に満ちた地にある大学であり、この精神は、大学の理念「発見し・はぐくみ・かたちにする　知の広場」に受け継がれ、教育・研究・地域貢献の３本の矢により地域の発展、日本そして世界の発展に貢献します。　Society 5.0の時代に必要とされる知的財産科目及びデータサイエンス科目を１年生全員に必修化し、ネイティブ教員による英語教育、地域に求められる人材育成、アントレプレナー教育など実践的で特徴ある教育を提供しています。また、

「山口大学基金」による修学支援（奨学金）、留学支援、留学生支援など、きめ細かい学生支援と就職指導を行っています。研究面では、最先端の研究を有機的に結び付ける「研究拠点事業」と文理融合による地域に根ざした「山口学研究」を設置し、地域から世界に発信しています。自治体や地元産業との結びつきを強固にし、地域に求められる大学としてさらに発展するとともに、性別、人種、文化、宗教などの違いを許容し、グローバルに発展するダイバーシティ・キャンパスを目指します。

Yamaguchi University is a comprehensive national university with over 10,000 students in 9 faculties and 8 graduate schools. The university traces its origins back to Yamaguchi Kodo, a private school started in 1815. We celebrated the 200th anniversary of this founding in 2015. Situated in an area which still holds the spirit of the Meiji Restoration and challenging itself, the university has the its values in our motto: “Discover it. Nourish it. Realize it. A Place of Wisdom.” We contribute to local development and the development of Japanese and international society through the three fields of education, research, and social engagement.

We have made the intellectual property and data science subjects regarded as necessary in the age of Society 5.0 compulsory for all first-year students. The practical and distinctive education we provide includes English language education by native instructors, development of human resources required by the local community, and entrepreneurial education. We also are committed to providing detailed student support and career guidance such as study abroad support, international student support, and financial aid for study (scholarships) using the Yamaguchi University Fund. In the field of research, we have established the “Research Center Program,” a scheme which organically connects cutting-edge research and the community-based

“Yamaguchi Studies” that fuse together humanities and sciences. Through these, we are sharing our research with the rest of the world. The university strives to strengthen bonds with municipalities and local industries and to grow further as a university that meets local demands. We also welcome differences in gender, race, culture, and religion to create diversity on our campuses that thrives internationally.

はじめに　山口大学は、1815（文化12）年、長州藩藩士・上田鳳陽によって創設された私塾・山口講堂を前身とし、明治・大正期の学制を経て、1949（昭和24）年には、平和と繁栄を願い、地域における高等教育および学問研究の中核たる新制大学として創設されました。そして2004（平成16）年、国立大学法人山口大学が設置する国立大学となりました。　いま、新たな大学づくりに踏み出すにあたり、ここに「山口大学憲章」を掲げ、学生・教員・職員の三者が一体となって、理念の共有と目標の実現をめざします。

Ⅰ　基本理念　１　「発見し・はぐくみ・かたちにする　知の広場」の創造

　私たち山口大学は、21世紀の多様な課題を「発見し・はぐくみ・かたちにする」、豊かな「知の広場」を創り出します。　私たち山口大学は、この「知の広場」において、自らの役割と実績とを不断に評価しつつ英知の創造をめざします。

　２　共同・共育・共有精神の涵養　私たち山口大学は、共に力を合わせ、共に育み合い、共に喜びを分かち合います。この共同・共育・共有の精神を“山大スピリット”として涵養します。

　３　公正・平等・友愛の尊重　私たち山口大学は、“山大スピリット”による他者への配慮と自らを律する倫理観のもとに、あらゆる偏見と差別を排し、公正と平等と友愛の精神を尊重します。

Yamaguchi University has its origins in Yamaguchi Kōdō, a private school, founded by Ueda Hōyō, a feudal clansman of Chōshū Province, in the 12th year of Bunka (1815). Since then, this academic institution had undergone many changes in keeping with the needs of the times. In 1949, it was, in the hope for peace and prosperity, reorganized into a new-system of higher education to become a national university, established as the core for the higher education and research in the region. In 2004 it became a national university institutionalized by the National University Corporation, Yamaguchi University.

Now standing on the threshold of creating a new university, we hoist the Charter of Yamaguchi University, by which we aim to realize the ideals and goals of unity shared by our students, faculty, and staff.

I. Ideals and Goals1. Creation of a "Place of Wisdom: Discover it, Nourish it, and Realize it"We, Yamaguchi University, create a "place of wisdom" by addressing a variety of tasks the twenty-first century must strive for: an intellectual forum where we "discover them, nourish them, and realize them."We, Yamaguchi University, stand in the middle of the "forum" and aim to create intelligence by consistently assessing our own roles and achievements.

2. Fostering the Spirit of Cooperation, Interactive Education, and SharingWe, Yamaguchi University, work together, interact educationally for each other's personal growth, and share the joy of it. We foster the spirit, the "YU Spirit", of cooperation, interactive education, and sharing.

3. Respect for Fairness, Equality, and FraternityWe, Yamaguchi University, eliminate all the prejudices and discriminations there could be, for the "YU Spirit" shows consideration for others and our ethic regulates ourselves. We hereby hold in great esteem, fairness, equality, and fraternity.

II. Goals of Education1. Cultivation of Specialties and Adaptability to SocietyWe, Yamaguchi University, are aware that we are the region's core integrated university. Dissemination and Application of Advanced Research for Social UtilizationWe, Yamaguchi University, emphasize the importance of basic and advanced research activities and others that are useful in solving and overcoming the problems society faces. As an integrated national university, we disseminate to society useful knowledge developed from excellent and advanced research activities for long-term perspective.

2. Establishment of Interdisciplinary Research SystemsWe, Yamaguchi University, have a high regard for the independence of each individual discipline ranging from Humanities through the Social and Natural Science to Life Science, but organize these into alliances, to establish interdisciplinary research systems best suited for the needs of the twenty-first century.

3. Conforming to the Visibility and Accountability of Research ActivitiesWe, Yamaguchi University, establish a collaborative research base, facilitating the exchange of researchers within and without the University. We fulfill our responsibilities to make research processes and achievements open to public and to make ourselves accountable for them.

IV. Our Missions1. Creation of New ValuesWe, Yamaguchi University, strive to develop new values to create the harmonious coexistence of humans and science, and humans and nature.

2. Contribution to Solving Social ProblemsWe, Yamaguchi University, have the awareness that, whilst the last century has brought about prosperity and abundance, it has also seen the emergence of social problems such as the destruction of nature, and increased poverty, famines, and wars. We take this new century for one in which we should wield the power of the wisdom and bravery that we have striven to accumulate in order to solve those problems that beset society.

3. Cooperation for the Development of Local and International SocietiesWe, Yamaguchi University, nurture humanitarian and highly-cultivated personalities and human resources.
