Science policy requires people who can understand and communicate and discuss science issues with both scientists and the public. Careers in science policy are popular options for scientists and engineers and include opportunities to work in academia, non-for profit organizations, government, or industry. As with many other career paths, however, landing a first job in science policy after finishing graduate school can be challenging. Therefore, early career scientists should start preparing for these careers early in their graduate or postdoctoral training. In the Preparing for Careers in Science Policy workshop, Dr. Fortis-Santiago will discuss a variety of science policy careers, what types of fellowships help explore those careers, and what opportunities student and postdocs should pursue to increase their chances of transitioning away from the bench and into the world of policy. She will also talk about her experiences in science policy and diplomacy during her tenure as an AAAS S&T Policy fellow. This workshop will cover: Types of jobs in science policy Science policy fellowships, with personal input about the AAAS S&T Policy fellowship Career opportunities for international students and postdocs Skills needed to succeed in science policy Transferable skills needed to succeed in science policy How to successfully apply for science policy fellowships Writing about your science for a science policy or a broader audience Preparing a resume and cover letter for policy positions Identifying professional development opportunities that will enhance your chances of landing a job in science policy
