Congratulations to all who

earned this honor!

The students, staff and parents of Yale Junior High School started off the holiday season by supplying twelve local families with extra large Thanksgiving baskets. The 12 turkeys were donated by Mr. Todd Kaatz and Ben’s Supermarket in Brown City. The student council and class officers collected canned and boxed food from students and parents at parent teacher conferences. Lastly, the Yale Junior high School staff donated $250.00 and had a staff member volunteer to go out and purchas the remaining necessities for the Thanksgiving baskets. We would like to thank all of the individuals that made the Thanksgiving basket donations a reality.

Yale Junior High School has a history of raising funds for “Julie’s Kids” during the Christmas season. Money raised goes to help needy students and families in our community. This year, students are hosting a holiday dance with 100% of the proceeds going to “Julie’s Kids”.

Class officers McKenzie Kosiara and Savannah McEvoy, along with Student Council member Rachel Bartley pack Thanksgiving baskets with food donated by students, parents and staff.

Patriots Pen, a youth essay writing contest sponsored by

the V.F.W is a nationwide writing competition that gives

students in grades 6, 7 and 8 the opportunity to write es-

says expressing their views on democracy. First place

this year went to Bailey Bischer with the topic WHEN

IS THE RIGHT TIME TO

HONOR OUR MILITARY HE-

ROES? Bailey, son of Ric and Dawn Bischer is an 8th grade

student in Mr. Rick Collins Social Studies Class. Runner

up Danielle Mackey, daugh-ter of John and Kathryn

Mackey is an 8th grade stu-dent in Ms. Sally Morgan’s

social studies class. Mrs. Steen spearheaded this pro-

ject at the Junior High.

Bailey’s essay will compete at the district level at a banquet

held in Cass City on January 10, 2010. If he is chosen at

districts he will move on the state competition in Kalama-

zoo followed by nationals in Washington D.C. with the

opportunity to win a $10,000.00 Savings Bond.

Honor Roll Recognition — “The Goods”

It pays to be on the honor roll. Students are recognized in a number of ways at Yale Junior High School. For those individuals who work hard and earn high academic marks in their classes, the honor roll recognition “goods” are your reward. Students who make the honor roll are asked to pick up their recogni-tion “goods” during their lunch period. Students earn pennants, pins, bumper stickers, and wrist bands every time they make the honor roll. Congratulations to all students who earned the honor roll this last marking period.

Stay Connected To Your School

One of the most important things a parent can do for their child is stay involved and know what is going on in their life. School also plays an important role in the development of a child. In order to better serve parents and establish communications between the school and home, Yale Junior High School offers a variety of different communication tools. All staff e-mails are posted on the school web-site (www.yale.k12.mi.us). Parents can also access their child’s academic grades (homework, test score and overall average) through Parent Connect. If you have not enrolled in Parent Connect, please contact Joann Sabada at 387-3231 ext 284.

A special thank you needs to go out to Mrs. Jenise Brennan, Media Tech, for all of her work and record keeping that she does for the AR program. On the following page is a complete listing of all of the students participating in the junior high school AR reading program and photos of the top four readers in each class. Thank you Mrs. Brennan!

Greetings from the 2010 Yale Junior High Yearbook

Staff! This year has been hard but rewarding; Year-

book Staff has been busy designing and submitting

pages to meet our deadlines. In addition to learning

new photography skills, staff is using computer pro-

grams like Herff Jones eDesign, MS Publisher, and MS

Excel. We have also learned sales techniques for sell-

ing yearbooks and advertisements. The 2010 Yearbook

costs $25 and is still available for purchase. If you are

interested in purchasing advertising for the yearbook,

please contact the Junior High office at (810) 387-

3231 ext. 232 or Ms. Morgan at

Accelerated Reader News

We are almost half way through the school year and thought that it would be a good time to recognize the students who are putting forth the extra effort to challenge themselves and their reading comprehension skills. A.R. is a curriculum–based assessment tool that monitors both the quality and quantity of reading performed by the students. This reading program is strictly voluntary. Each book has a point value based on the number of words and its reading difficulty. The Junior High has currently has over 900 Accelerated Reader titles the student may choose from. As students accumulate points they are awarded small incentives, 25 pts = E_Z Glide Pen, 50 pts. = Econo Water Bottle, 100 pts. = Locker sized Whiteboard w/pen, 150 pts. = Pen on a Rope, 250 pts. = Lunch with the Principal and a T-Shirt, 500 pts. = Mega Reader Certificate at the Awards Ceremony and the student’s name engraved on a plaque. Congratulations to the following high achievers and their efforts put forth to earn their points:

Title I

Title I is a federal supplemental program designed to help students reach high academic standards. Avoca, Yale Jr. High, and Yale Elementary Schools all receive Title I services. In receiving funds for these programs, Yale Public Schools has a require-ment to provide information to parents regarding your child’s classroom teacher’s professional qualifications upon request.

Information will be provided to you upon request of the following:

-Whether your child’s teacher has met Michigan qualification and licensing criteria for the grade levels and subject areas in which the teacher provides instruction.

-Whether your child’s teacher is teaching under emergency or other provisional status through which Michigan qualifi-cations or licensing criteria have been waived.

-The baccalaureate degree major of your child’s teacher and any other graduate certification or degree held by the teacher, and the field of discipline of the certification or degree.

-Whether your child is provided services by paraprofessionals and, if so, their quali-fications.

You will also receive timely notice if your child is, for whatever reason, assigned, or has been taught for four or more consecutive weeks by a teacher who is not highly qualified. A highly qualified teacher would be defined as a teacher that meets Michigan’s qualifications and licensing criteria for the grade level or subject in which the teacher is providing instruction.

You may also re-quest additional in-formation on the level of achievement of your child in each of Michigan’s as-sessments. Michi-gan uses the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) to determine levels of achieve-ment. Information on your child’s MEAP assess-ment will be available at the school your child at-tends in late Jan. or Feb. Information on teacher qualifications can be obtained from the Central Administration Office.
