A Musical Journey Through Time

Dear Friends and Supporters of the Yakima Symphony Orchestra:

This year our season will have a new look. Although the overall number of concerts remains the same, all eleven programs will be wrapped into our mainstage YSO Capitol Series. We will be offering six Classical concerts and five Pops concerts.

The theme for our six-concert ClaSSiCal SerieS, A Musical Journey Through Time, is loosely based on an idea that longtime patron of the orchestra Dr. Jim Dodge

shared with me shortly before his passing. Each program will focus on a different period of music history, presented chronologically. In each case, we will present the most important composers of that era. A Baroque Beginning showcases the music of Bach, Handel and Vivaldi. This concert will feature the Yakima debut of Martin Chalifour, concertmaster of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, performing the beloved Four Seasons by Vivaldi. Classical Classics features music of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, along with Alexander Kobrin, Gold Medal Winner of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition! The Romantics includes Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 4 and the Brahms Double Concerto for Violin & Cello with John Marshall, principal cellist of the Spokane Symphony Orchestra, and yours truly playing the solo violin part. A Brave New World showcases 20th-Century masterworks and concludes with the ‘here and now.’ This action-packed program will include Strauss’ “Dance of the Seven Veils” with belly dancers, the Sibelius Violin Concerto featuring YSO Concertmaster Denise Dillenbeck, Stravinsky’s Petrushka, a ballet about puppets that we will present with Portland’s Tears of Joy puppet theatre, and the Yakima premiere of our very own Principal Clarinet Angelique Poteat’s Beyond Much Difference. You can’t get any more ‘here and now’ than that! After having taken this musical journey through time, we will step back and conclude the season with The Pinnacle: the greatest and most influential symphony of all time…Beethoven 9, featuring the Yakima Symphony Chorus and our new Chorusmaster Justin Raffa. An added bonus on this year’s ClaSSiCal SerieS will be the return of the University of Denver’s Lamont Opera Theatre for another spectacular, fully-staged opera production.

Our five-concert POPS SerieS will be filled with excitement and variety. We start with Classical Mystery Tour, the world’s premier Beatles tribute show. They sound and look just like the original Fab Four. We will then resurrect a tradition from several years ago, a family-style Halloween Spooktacular, joined by the Yakima Symphony Chorus. Everyone is encouraged to come in costume and join in the fun. We will share the stage again with the Yakima Symphony Chorus for our annual Christmas Pops Spectacular, this year featuring the Yakima Jazz Sextet. In February, along with the rest of the world, we will celebrate the 85th birthday of the king of film music, John Williams. Star Wars, E.T., Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park…do I need to go on? Come dressed as your favorite John Williams film character. Finally, we will present Sports Orchestrated: From Rocky and Chariots of Fire to the Olympics, the greatest sports music ever!

We are very excited about this season and look forward to having you join us on A Musical Journey Through Time!

Sincerely,

Lawrence GolanThe Helen N. Jewett Music DirectorYakima Symphony Orchestra

supporting Your YsO

My mixed media painting, “Passage,” chosen by the Yakima Symphony Orchestra to illustrate this year’s theme of “A Musical Journey Through Time,” is part of a large, interrelated series of artworks collectively titled illuminated Chaconne, inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach’s iridescent masterwork for solo violin, the Chaconne from the Second Partita in D minor. Using the design foundation of an expanding spiral galaxy, the paintings of illuminated Chaconne follow life’s passage through recurring

cycles of change, as it continually builds new forms from the seeds and structures of the past.
