READING GUIDE
The Ants and the Grasshopper
On day, a family of ants was busy working carefully
laying out grain to dry. All of them were working
very hard.
A grasshopper approached them with a fiddle
under his arm. “Hi!” he said. “I’m pretty hungry.
Can you give me some of your grain?”
The biggest of the ants replied, “But why don’t
you have any grain? You have had months to
collect it.”
“Well,” said the grasshopper, “I just wanted to
play music, so I spent my summer doing that. I
didn’t collect any grain because I was too busy
having fun.”
The ant replied, “I don’t think it’s fair that we
worked hard all summer to collect the grain, and
then you come and want to take out grain even
though you didn’t work for it.”
The ant continued, “We like to make music and
have fun too, but we knew that it was important
to collect grain in the summer so that we had
something to eat in the winter.”
The grasshopper said, “But I’m really hungry!
Aren’t you going to give me any grain?”
“No!” The ant shouted. “You can’t expect
rewards if you don’t do the work!”
