Happy �ew Year! Message from CMH President

As the old year closes and the New Year is upon us, now is the time to reflect on the old and usher in the new. First I wish happy thoughts to several members who have moved away to pursue career opportunities in other states – Todd Pressley and Dave Manley. Both have been steadfast contributors to the health and welfare of the club, as officers, members and supporting the gaming community in general. Their presence will be missed. As Mr. Manley was the Club Treasurer and vacated the office, Larry Irons has stepped up to become the Interim Treasurer until club elections in May. Thank you Larry for your prompt response and willingness to carry the torch. Club elections will be held in May at the Sunday meeting as usual. I will be stepping down as President due to increased family commitments. Other offices up for election include Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and Historian. I hope that the current officers will continue to run for their posts, but understand if they choose not to renew their commitments. The New Year brings in new dues. Dues have remained the same at $50.00 for the year, payable in January. This year the schwag are gray dice with black pips and a red CMH shield on the “6” side. Paid members will receive the usual 4 dice with their membership. Additional dice will be available for sale in February. For 2010, the club will run a deficit of approximately 700 dollars. While we can support such a loss for several years, now is the time to determine the financial direction of the club. Possible solutions include increasing revenue and cutting costs. In terms of increasing revenue, it is unlikely that membership dues will be sufficient to cover our current and future needs, as such, additional sources of revenue may be required – fund raisers such as t-shirts or schwag, fee based tournaments, a fee to use a table at our Annual swap meet or other events. Our two largest expenses are the Sunday meetings at Baker and the FNF’s at Baker. For 2011, the meetings for the Monthly and FNF meetings at Baker have already been paid for. Going forward, possibilities include reduced or eliminated FNF at Baker, possibly moving the cancelled nights to a game store in the north Metro area, possibly Total Escape in Broomfield or Stonebridge Games in Longmont. If you have ideas for additional areas that can be used to generate revenue or have an opinion on maintaining FNF at Baker, please let a club officer know.

Thank you to Tony and Stan for your contributions. 2010 is coming to a close as I write this editorial. I would say it has been another successful wargaming year at the club. This year we had some membership changes. Todd Pressley stepped down as Historical Miniature Coordinator at Denver Gamers Association conventions. Todd later in the year moved to Virginia. In May Larry was voted in as Vice-President and Doug Wildfong as Historian. Dave Manley announced at the end of the year he would be moving Arizona and Larry took over as interim Treasurer. Binhan coordinated West Wars convention and Dan coordinated the Veterans War convention. We welcomed a new member to our club, Nate Forte. We continue to game with a variety of miniature scales and rules. Popular rules this year were Black Powder, Disposable Heroes, and DBM. Zombie games were popular this year. Ancients, WWII and American Civil War continue to be popular.

Veteran’s Wars Flames of War Tournament After Action Report by CMH Member

On Saturday of Veteran’s Wars we held a Flames of War (FOW) tournament (sponsored by Stonebridge Games) which drew 8 players. Just four players shy of what we needed to make it a FOW Nationals Qualifying Event. The tournament was 3 rounds where the top scoring players were matched against one another. In the first round, we try to match axis versus allies and the following rounds fall as they may. It was a hard fought day with CMH’s own Scott McKenzie winning Best Overall Score. J ames Bush from Fort Collins took second followed by Jeff Lambert. Jeff also won the best painted army. Scott’s son, Colin took the last prize winning spot at 5th. Nate Forte, another CMH member, ended up getting honorable mention for his poor dice rolling skills and bringing up the rear. We are grateful to Stonebridge Games in Longmont for sponsoring and providing the prize support for the event.

We were fortunate that one of the players, Paul Stone, brought his remaining FOW stock from his now closed store and was selling it at a 35% discount. Many bargains were to be had. If you are interested in seeing what is left, please let me know and I can put you in touch with him.

The Tournament was viewed as a success by all the participants with everyone having a fun afternoon. Perhaps next year we can bring in a few more players to make this a National Qualifying Event.

Colorado Military Historians, Inc.

Colorado Military Historians (CMH) is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote historical wargaming and the study of military history. Founded in 1965, CMH meets monthly on the second Sunday of the month, except in May when the meeting is deferred to the third Sunday. The meeting starts at noon at the Baker Recreation Center, 6751 Irving Street (just a few blocks west of Federal Blvd), Denver, Colorado. The club also hosts gaming every Friday night, called “Friday Night Fights” (FNF) at 7:00 p.m. The first and third Friday of the month, these meetings will be held at the Baker Community Center. The second and fourth Friday of the month, the meetings will be at Valhalla’s Gaming Center, 6161 W. 44th Ave., Wheatridge, Colorado. CMH maintains ties with numerous local, regional and national groups to help promote the hobby. CMH is governed by member-elected officers serving on the Board of Directors (executive board). Terms of office are one year, with elections held at the May meeting. New members are accepted after attending three CMH functions and a vote of the membership. Dues are $50.00 per year, payable in January. Members wishing to receive a snail-mailed newsletter subscription must pay an additional fee of $15.00 per year. Authors retain ownership of articles and graphics published. CMH reserves the right to edit or reject submissions to the newsletter.
