XXX]I.--2Votes on various Species of the American Genus Astylus, Cast., with Descriptio~ts of t/~eir Sexual Characters [Coleo2otera ~. By GEORGE CHAaLES CHA~PION, F.Z.S.

CERTAIN species of the Malaco&'nn genus Astylus, Cast. (=-M,c.glossa, Solier) exhibit rema,'kable sexual characters, two only of which appear to have been specially noticed by authors, viz., the broad, vertical lamella on each side of' the terminal abdominal segment; in ~ 3' of A. tr~fasdatus and A. ga~i, mentioned by Gugrin, and the deeply emarginate, bispinose apices of the elytra in ~ ? of A. octopustulatas and A. t, ntillarum, observed by Gotham. The presence of these and other important external structures~ accompanied by peculiarities in the d' g('nital armature (visible in many dried specimens), has induced me to examine the tegmen and tedeagus (penis-sheath *) of nearly all the species repre- sented in the British Museum, or in that of the Hope Collection al~ Oxford. These chitinous structures are noticed in det, ail in the present paper ; and in a number of eases the insect itsel:, owing to uneertait~ties of identification, is re- described, or named, if new. The principal external charac- ~ers obscrvod~ apart t'rom the longer antemlm or curved tibiae of the males of certain species, are : - - ( i ) the presence of two compresse(], subeonical, tuberenliform or (lentif()rm promin- ences on the metasternum in c~ (A. octopustulatus, gorhami, &c.); (2) lhe long, spiniform, anterior troehanters in d' (A. sub~/riseus); (3) the obliquely produced or dentiform inner apical angles of one or more of the intermediate joints of the anterior tarsi in c~ (A. antis, spleudidus, correptus, and co~vext~s); (4) the posteriorly constricted elytra in (3' (A. co~'reptus) ; (5) the deeply emarginate, bispinose apices of the elytra in ? (A. octo2oustulatus , 9orhami, a~tillarum, &e.); (6) the sinuato-truneated apices of the elytra, with sharp or dentiform sutural angl% in ? (A. quadvillneatus, imbricatus, &e.); (7) the elongate, conical~ terminal, abdo- minal segment: in (~ (A. se.vm~wulatus, &e.) ; (8) the laterally lamellate terminal abdominal segment, amt broadly divided fifth ventral segment, in c~ (A. trifasci,,t,s and gagi); (9) the forcipate terminal dorsal segment in ~ (A. forcipatus).

The tegmen of the g' in many of the species is very deeply emarginate or cleft at the apex (A. trifasciatus, &e.) ; in others it is feebly emarginate (A. octopustulatus, &e.)~ tluueated (A. cyan'erythrus~ &c.)~ or simply rounded al~ the

tip (A. eorrepO~s) ; the margins of ~he distal portion of this organ are usually clothed with long curled hairs. The very elongate penls-sheath exhibits a variety of" forms : (1) almost straiglfl~ fl'om near the base and simply pointed at the tip (A. antis and many other species) ; (2) broad, compressed, and obliquely truncate at the tip (A. sexmaculatus); (3) eonstricted distally, and obliquely truncate and sub- securiform at tim tip (A. v!'ttaticolli~); (4) flattened and strongly bisinuate as seen m profile (A. trifasciatus and gayi). The long membranous sac, containing the true intromittent orgal,, has not been examined : the distal portion of it is usually seen protruding from the dorsal surface of the penis-sheath at seine distance before the apex of the latter~ and in some cases the exposed part appears to be studded with asperities or short bristles*. The terminal abdominal segment of the ~' is separated from the preceding segment, on both the ventral and dorsal aspects, by a mem- branous space, ex~ending broadiy ibrward along the entire length of the fifth ventral segment~ in A. trifasciatus, sex- maculatus, &e., allowing great freedom of movelnent of this portion of the body during copulation. In several species a thickened hook-like process has been noticed on the front of the first ventral segment in c~ ; but as this structure is almost covered by the posterior eoxm, nnd cannot be seen {ill ~he abdomen is detached~ no use has been made of it in the present paper.

The genus Ast.{tlus extends over the greater part of South America, and i~ particularly well represented at high eleva- tions in the Eeuadorean Andes, two species occurring as far nortil as l~anama, and lwo in the Lesser Antilles. The large Chilean forms have been placed under a separate genus, Mecoglossa~ by Seller, a name that might conveniently be retained tbr them, on account of the extraordinary genital armature of the c~, and the clett terminal ventral segment of the ? . Since the publication of the " Munich" Catalogue el Malacodermata, in 1869, numerous species of Astglus have been described or named by Kirsch, Berg, Steinheil, Gorham~ Bourgeois, and Pie. I t is questionable whether one of the papers by the last-named author, m~titled " S u r le genre Astylus, Cast." (L 'Echa,ge, xvii. pp. a -36, 1902), containing many proposed new names for 8. American forms, unaccompanied by definite descriptions or measurements~ and issued solely--as the author states--to secure priorit~y, should

* The genitalia examined have been dissected by Mr. A. Cant. To extract these pieces without injury, it has been found necessary to boil the detached abdomen in caustic potash.

Species of the Amer:c~tn Ge~us As~ylus. 341

This insect has extremely rugosely punctured elytra, and two more or less distinct costse on die disc ; the first and second |'aseise are usually connected with the dark sutural strip% and tile latter is someti, nes dilated at tlle tip. The re,talcs are broader than the males, and some of them (labelled with tile MS. name Mecogtossa intermedia in the F r y collection), from Lota, Chillan, &c., have much less coarsely punetate elytra. The long hairs on the under surface are cillereous in colour in the rugose f'orm~ and intermixed with black hairs in the smoother examples. The elytral markings arc sometimes reduced to two spots on the outer part of tile dis% the anterior one being quite small. Females largely preponderate in tho long series before me, few of which are labelled with any definite locality.

Hub. CHILE, Valparaiso (C. I)arwln)~ Concepcion, San Bias, Coquimbo (Mus. Brit.), Arauca,i~ (R. M. .'ltid:lleto,t), &c.

This insect is a smoother 7 very hairy form of A. trlfasclatus~ with the elytral markings usually reduced to three angular patches along the outer part of the disc and the sutural stripe dilated at the base and apex, and the long hairs on the under surface entirely or in great part black. The two forms have precisely similar (~ armature, and the smoother females alluded to under A. trif~sci~dus would be equally well placed under either of them.

3. Astylus sexmaculatus.

Of the ~wenty-five specimens before me, females pre- ponderating, five belong to the smaller form with a relatively narrow prot~horax in both sexes~ this latter corresponding to the D.flavofasciatus of Blanehard, from Corrientes, l~io Grande, Sapucay, &e. A male of each has been dissected, and the armature proves to be precisely similar. The broad, com- plet% submedian flavous fascia on the olytra separates A. antis from A. splendidus. The prothorax and the base of the elytra are thickly seL with lot,?,'~ erect or projecting, black hairs in both of them. The length varies from 10-16 mm.

with the flavous markings on the elytra reduced to an oblique subapical fascia on tho outer part of the disc; the fascia, however in one of tho five examples seen (2 d' c~, 3 ~ ~) reaches the suture and is continued along it for a short distance forward. The ~' characters are similar to those of A. anti 5 and the two insects are certainly nothing more than forms of one species. Both occur at l{io de Janeir% where also the smaller and narrower A.flavofascialus, Blanch., has been found.

To judge from the labels on 1he numerous examples before me, two or more species are confused in collections under the name A. bont, landi, after the. elimination of" A. rabripenMs ; and it is doubtful if much reliance can be placed on some of tile Ecuador locality tickets, as it is scarcely likely that an insect ranges from the sea-level at Guayaquil to the elevated region of Quite. (13 ? 9, ¢ (~ ~ ) , belonging to the British Museum, or to the Hope Collection at Oxford, vary greatly in size (length

1 1 ram.), and to some extent in colour. 4½-10, breadth 2~-5.~ The two black patches on the disc of the prothorax are often transversely confluent, and the dark coloration sometimes extends over the whole dorsmn, or leaves the basal margin only red ; and tlle reddish submedian and subapical fasciae on the elytra are very narrow in some examples~ and not con- nected along the suture, differing in this respect from Party's figure. Three ~f the specimens at Oxford are labelled with the MSS. names annulatus, K , longicornis~ K., and speciosus respectively. A normal large d' (speciosus in Mus. Oxen.) has been dissected for examination of the mouth-parts and genital armature. It is possible that the smaller, darker, and more opaque form, also from Rio de Janeir% may prove to be distinct? The synonymy quoted refers to the larger insect.

Moderately elongate, rather convex, shining, the elytra duller, clothed with erect, black bristly hairs intermixed with scattered cinereous pnbeseene% the vestiture of the under surface long, cinereous ; black, t~he antenme in great part, the prothorax with the entire margin~ the elytra with the sutural and outer margins and a narrow !-shaped streak running down the middle of the disc to near the apex, the coxa~, and legs (the tarsi, posterior femora, and posterior tibim in part excepted) testaceous; the head closely, the prothorax rather sparsely punctured, the elytra irregularly asperato-punc~ate, with the interspaees alutaceous. Head rather short an,I broad, arcuately impressed in front ; antennte moderately long. Prothorax transversely convex, hollowed in the middle at the base, shallowly suleate posteriorly. Elytra not very long, parallel, with or without two feeble costm on the disc, the apices narrow, rounded.

d'. Ventral segment 5 feebly arcuato-emarginate, 6 short, triangularly notched at apex. Tegmen t~'uncate at tip. Penis-sheath acuminate.

A variable insect, if tile specimens beibre me all belong to one species. The reddish or flavesceut marginal and dis- coidal virtue of the elytra are sometimes coaleseeut at the tip and the discoidal one may be reduced to a narrow incom- plete line. Four males have been dissected, showing some variation in the form of the legmen, which in a large example from Buenos Ayres has a short lobe on each side at tip. Two small malos from Monte Vide% with t~he sutm'al angles of the elytra obtuse and the tegmen rounded at apex, may bolong to a different species.'? The length varies from 6-9 ram. Tile dissimilarity in tile shape of the elytra in tile two sexes, the elytra themselves being sharply costate laterally in both of them, the peculiarly formed anterior and intermediate tarsi of tile d" (suggestive of the Palmaretic geuus t[e~dcopus), and the sim l,le , mm',w tegmen in the same sex, are characters of insuffici~,,,t import- ance to remove A. correptus from Astqh~s. Moderately elongaflc, narrow, feebly shining, clothed with long, erect, bristly hairs intermixed with adpressed, scattered, cinereous pubescence, the vestiture of the under surface long, cinereous; black, with a ~faint brassy tinge, the antenna% tibim, and tarsi flestaceous ; the elytra flavous, each with two broad vittm extending from the base to the apical declivity (one dorsal, the other submarginal), and a spot before the apex, black ; closely, finely, the dark portions of the elytra rugulosely, punctat% flhe t)unctures on the flavous portions conspicuous, and uuiseriately arranged within the dorsal and marginal ridges. Head broad, the eyes larg% promlnm~t ; anflennm moderately long. Prothorax transverse, narrowed anteriorly, canaliculafle on the disc. insect; tile elytra flavous, with two broad vittm (discoidal and submarginal), and a spot before the apex, black; tile antennm, tibim, and tarsi testaeeous; the terminal dorsal abdominal segment with a long process on each side. A. fo~'eipatus is not unlike the insect here identified as A. j,,tah31ensis , Pi% and is somewhat similarly coloured-- except that the prothorax is wholly black and the subapieaI spot on the elytra is testaeeous (instead of blaek)--differing from the latter in having a rougher, less convex prothorax, a stout costa on the disc of the elytLa, &e.*

30. Astyl~s co~wex~,s, sp. n. :Elongate oval~ rather convex, very shining, sparsely pilose ;

metallic blue, the basal job,ts of the antennm in great part rufo-testaceous, the elylra te~taee()us, with the suture narrowly and two broad stripes on the disc (un;{ed posteriorly in one specimen) ceeruleous, the legs black; tile head closdy, finely~ the prothorax sparsely, somewhat coarsely, and the elytra very eoarsely~ l)unctate. Head rather broad; antennm (~') long and comparatively stout, ~he joints longer than broad, in 9 alittle shorter. Prothorax transverse, ampl% rounded at the sides, the margins strongly reflexed. Elytra moderately long, somewhat acuminate at tip, without trace of costm, the humeri obtuse. Wings wanting. Legs moderately elongate.

d'. Anterim" tarsi with joint 2 drawn out into an oblique tooth, and 3 angulate, at the inner apical angle. Ventral segment 5 deeply arcuato-emarginate, 6 short, notched at tip. Penis-sheath drawn out into a long point at apex,

Length 5-5½, breadth 2{ ram. ( ~ ? .) Hab. P~RU, Chanchamayo (Thamm). One male and two females. A rather convex, apterous,

metallic-blue insect, with testaceous, cmruleo-bilineate elytra. Not unlike A. pallipes, Kirseh, fl'om Ecuador, but more convex, the antennm longer and stouter, the prothorax more ample and with strongly reflexed margins, the humeral callus obsolete, the legs black, the wings (so far as can be seen without opening the elytra) wanting. This species may have to be removed fi'om Astflus. The long antenn% &c., separate A. convexus from the Chilean genus Arthrobrachus.

* In the Fry Collection there is a damaged c~ of an allied larger form irom La Paz, Bolivia, with entirely testaceous legs~ the abdominal pro- cesses wanting', &c. It cannot be referred to A. boliviensis or exclama- tionia, Pic, from the same country.

Head small, subrostrate, the eyes large ; antennee short~ sen'ate, joints 7-10 about as broad as long, in 6 , transverse in ~. t)rothorax narrowed anteriorly. Elytra long, subparalle], costate from the hmneral callus to ,tear the apex, and also with an anteriorly evanescent costa on the disc ; the apices in 3' distinctly sinuate and with the sutural angle sharply produced, in ? very deeply emargimlte, with the sutural and outer angles each produced into a long curved tooth, those, at the sutm'a] angles overlapping, the outer one very strongly arcuate.

~'. Metasternum with two compressed, conical, tuberculi- form prominences in the middle behind. Ventral segment 5 deeply arcuato-emarginat% 6 long, subcylindrical (with the dorsal portion forming a long tube, which is cleft laterally at the tip), Tegmen feebly bifurcate at tip, deeply sulcate at the apex above, the apical portion thickly clothed with long, curled, blackish hairs. Penis-sheath sharply pointed~ cm'ved upward at the tip.

sutural angles. The male probably has tubercles on the metasternum~ these being present in the same sex of the nearly allied 2t. curvidens. The Venezuelan insect referred by Gorham to his A. vittatus may belong here ?

the allied forms as a eolour-variety (the lhird spot on the elytra small and the second wanting altogether), owing to the broadly sinuato-truncate apices of the elytra and the inwardly-produced dentiform sutural angles.

XXXIII . - -On some External Characters of Ruminant Artio- dactyla.--Part IV. The geduncinm (Cervicaprinm) and 2Epycerinm. By I1,. I. PococK, ~F.I~.S.

As in the previous papers of this series published in the ' Annals ' for June, August, and September of this )ear , the pagination subjoined to the specific headings refers to my treatise on the Cutaneous Gla:lds of the Ruminants printed in the Proc. Zool. Soc. tbr 1910.

Subfamily RED~rC~r~V~ (olim Cervicapri~e).

Genus DELEA.

Pelea eapreolus, Bechst. (p. 911).

A second specimen of this species, which came into my hands since 1910, enables me to confirm in every particular the characters of the genus, based on external f~atures, which I pointed out in that year.

Since this specimen, like the first, had no trace of inguinal glands, I think it may be assumed that Owen's statement as to their presence was false.

The only fact I have to add to my original description is that the false hoofs on both the fore and hind feet are united across the middle line.

Genus ELEOTII, AGUS~ Gray.

Eleotra#us aru~,dinum, Bodd.

In 1910 1 was'not in a position to incorporate an account
