Welcome Message from the General Co-ChairsOn behalf of the ICEM’2018 Organizing Committee, we would like to welcome you all in Alexandroupoli for the XXIII edition of the International Conference on Electrical Machines (ICEM). It is really a great honor and pleasure to host ICEM in this city.
The ICEM has been established as the oldest, the largest and the most prestigious International conference entirely devoted to electrical machines. Started 1n London in 1974 under the leadership of Professor Arthur Ellison, ICEM is now a regular biennial event, mainly organized in Europe.
Very successful recent editions have been held in Helsinki, Finland in 2000, Bruges, Belgium in 2002, Cracow. Poland in 2004, Chania, Greece in 2006, Vilamoura, Portugal in 2006, Roma, Italy in 2010, Marseille, France in 2012, Berlin, Germany in 2014 and Lausanne, Switzerland, in 2016. Even though the ICEM is an independent and nonprofit organization, it has established links with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Inc. (IEEE) with technical co-sponsorship of its societies in 2006. This has the consequence of a real jump in quality, and now ICEM papers are published in one of the most important scientific databases in the world, the IEEEXplore. Moreover, ICEM papers are now more referenced than in the past, due to what IEEE is providing in terms of international visibility. For the 2018 edition, ICEM has received the technical co-sponsorship of the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS) and the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES).
ICEM is coming in Greece again after twelve years; the previous time it was in Chania, and it was very successful. Alexandroupoli is at the crossroad of people and cultures. A “key” city of Greece, whether you leave or enter the east, l inking Europe to Asia, West to East. At the same time, it is one “open embrace” towards the open sea and noted for the hospitable spirit of its 60.000 inhabitants.
The Greek island of Samothrace is located in the northeastern Aegean Sea near Alexandroupolis. In ancient times, the island was home to a temple complex known as the Sanctuary of the Great Gods. An excavation on the Greek island of Samothrace unearthed a large winged female statue carved from white Parian marble. Known today as the Nike of Samothrace, the sculpture is considered one of the greatest masterpieces of antiquity.
The ICEM’2018 Organizing Committee wishes you a very successful conference, in which you will certainly attend interesting technical sessions, you will meet new and old friends and colleagues further collaborations, and you will return back home with new ideas in this continuously expanding technical field of electrical machines.
We hope you will keep many fond memories from your participation.

Welcome Message from the Local Organizing Committee On behalf of the ICEM'2018 Local Organizing Committee, I would like to welcome you all in Greece. For me and my colleagues from the Greek Universities, it is a great pleasure and honor to host the XXIII International Conference on Electrical Machines (ICEM) in Greece for the third time. After Athens and Chania, in 1980 and 2006 respectively, Alexandroupoli becomes the center of Electrical Machines’ specialists for a few days. Alexandroupoli is situated in the ancient and modern region of Thrace, northwest of the Evros River estuary on the Gulf of Ainos, an inlet of the Thracian Sea.
The first settlement in Thrace dates back to 100,000 BC. Ancient Thrace stretched from the Aegean Sea to the Danube and from the Black Sea to the borders of Macedonia. According to Herodotus the Thracians were in ancient times, the most populous people after the Indians. Prehistoric residents are added to the Thracian tribes that descend from the North. In the 7th century BC the Greeks colonize the Aegean, the Hellespont and the Black Sea. On the coast of the Thracian land, major Ionian colonies are founded and flourished: Maroneia, Abdera, Byzantium, Anchialos, Apollonia, Mesembria, Odessa.
Ancient Greeks considered the Thracians to be superior to culture as well. They were the first to teach the worship of the Muses, the cultivation of the land, the fortification of the cities, the rules of martial art, the construction of artillery, etc. The famous Orpheus was not only a singer, he was also a philosopher, as well as a mysterious ceremony editor, to whom the constitution of the Eleusinian mysteries is attributed. The major stories about him are centered on his ability to charm all living things and even stones with his music, his attempt to retrieve his wife, Eurydice, from the underworld, and his death at the hands of those who could not hear his divine music. Thracians was Democritus, a researcher and rapporteur of atomic theory, Lefkippos, a philosopher and individual researcher and the Sophist Protagoras.
In the area of Thrace Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH) was established in July 1973 by Legislative Decree No. 87 of 27 July 1973, and started operating during the academic year 1974-1975. It was named "Democritus" in honor of the ancient Greek philosopher Democritus, who hailed from the town of Abdera in Thrace.
The administration of DUTH is headquartered in Komotini, which is the capital city of the Administrative Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. The University is currently operating eight Faculties and nineteen Schools in four cities of Thrace - eight in Komotini, five in Xanthi, four in Alexandroupolis and two in Orestiada. Overall, more than 15,000 students are studying at DUTH at undergraduate and post-graduate level.
We hope you will enjoy your participation in the Conference but most important you will enjoy your stay in Alexandroupoli, Thrace, Greece. Try to find a little free time to explore the beauty of this place.

Message from the Technical Program Co-ChairsThe XXIIInd edition of ICEM is a major event of the worldwide engineering community working in the field of electrical machines and their applications. It was therefore a great honor and a pleasure for us to be in charge of the technical program of ICEM’2018. This is the seventh time after Chania in 2006, Vilamoura in 2008, Roma in 2010, Marseille in 2012, Berlin in 2014 and Lausanne 2016, that ICEM proposes its new shape to participants and to authors with the technical co-sponsorship of IEEE. For this purpose, it has been asked to submit a full provisional version of each paper for both regular tracks and special sessions.
For the 2018 edition, the Organizing Committee has proposed to participants:
5 tutorials6 tracks for regular papers7 special sessions on “hot” topicsA student forumA technical exhibition
Altogether, 481 papers have been submitted and approximately 400 will be in the final program involving more than thousand authors from countries all around the world. The mean number of reviews per paper has been higher than three with almost 600 reviewers involved. In the technical program, the papers have been classified in 3 poster sessions and 30 oral sessions.
The Technical Program represents the integrated effort of many individuals, namely, authors, reviewers, track co-chairs, special session organizers, and local committee members, whom we would like to thank for their contributions to the success of ICEM’2018.
It is our strong opinion that the world's state of the art on electrical machines will be well represented across both technical tracks and special sessions. However, if few words have to be chosen, then "embedded, grid-connected, design, modelling, analysis, control and condition monitoring" are our choices of index terms summarizing the large majority of presentations. We look forward to the intellectual stimulation of all participants, and would like to thank you again for attending ICEM’2018.
Welcome to Alexandroupoli!

The City of AlexandroupoliAlexandroupoli or Alexandroupolis is a city in Greece and the capital of the Evros regional unit in East Macedonia and Thrace.
With its strategic position, a crossroads of sea and land routes, Alexandroupolis connects Europe and Asia, East to the West. This beautiful seaside city, whose trademark is a Lighthouse, forms the centre of a truly fascinating region. Alexandroupoli benefits from its position at the center of land and sea routes connecting Greece with Turkey. Landmarks in Alexandroupoli include the city's lighthouse in the port, the archaeological sites of the Mesimvria Zone and Maroneia stretching out to the small port of Agios Charalambos, the city's waterfront (the center of commercial activity), and the nearby Evros Delta.
Alexandroupoli is one of the newest cities in Greece, as it was only a fishing village until the late 19 th century. However, the modern city is located at the site of ancient Sale a Greek city of the classical era founded by colonists from the island of Samothrace, mentioned by Herodotus.
Evros Delta is an important wetland on a national, European and international level. For many years it is a Protected Area, as it has a big value for wildlife and humanity.
In Evros Delta hundreds of thousands of birds find shelter and food all year round, while it constitutes a very important natural resource for the local community, because of his value for fishing, stock breeding, agriculture, climate, flood protection, education, recreation, science. The narrative of the innumerable
birds that bred at the Evros Delta (geese, herons, pelicans, swans), the plentiful fish collected in the nets of fishermen and wild mammals roamed numerous wetland are now only a distant memory and nostalgia. Despite the degradation of the value of Evros Delta for wildlife is great, especially for birds, which are a magnet for many visitors, students, scientists and bird watchers.

Tutorial ITheme: Modulation Techniques for Low Voltage Drives and their System Aspects
Hall: Dimokritos 1
Presenter (s): Tsoumas Ioannis (Senior Scientist ) ABB Corporate Research, Baden-Dättwil Switzerland [email protected]
Bio Ioannis P. Tsoumas received the Dipl.-Eng. and Dr.-Eng. degrees in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Patras, Greece, in 2000 and 2007 respectively. From 2008 to 2015 he was an R&D engineer in the field of low voltage high power motor drive systems technology at Siemens AG, Nuremberg, Germany. Among others, he contributed significantly in the development of the modulation of the SINAMICS G120P converters and in the converter/drive system efficiency investigations in relation to the European standard EN 50598-2. He also participated in the development of the SIMOTICS-FD motors. In 2015 he joined the ABB Corporate Research Center in Baden-Daettwil, Switzerland, where he is mainly working on converter topologies and modulation strategies for medium voltage drives. He is currently a Senior Scientist successfully leading a project enabling the next generation of medium voltage drives. Dr. Tsoumas is a Senior Member of the IEEE. He has filed several patent applications and he has more than 50 publications in international scientific journals and conferences.
AbstractThe main objective of the converter modulation is to control the amplitude and the frequency of the fundamental harmonic component and at the same time minimize the inverter’s switching losses and the higher harmonics of the output current. To this end different modulation techniques have been developed in the previous decades. In order to optimize the electric drive system’s performance various factors such as control performance, system losses, motor noise emissions and common mode voltage have to be taken into account when selecting and optimizing a modulation strategy. These factors set the evaluation and selection criteria for the modulation from a drive system’s perspective. Aim of the tutorial is to present the common low voltage converter topologies, the possible modulation strategies and their main characteristics as well as important system aspects concerning their application in a drive system. Important motor-converter interactions are also analyzed in this frame.

Nike of SamothraceThe Winged Victory of Samothrace, also called the Nike of Samothrace, is a marble Hellenistic sculpture of Nike (the Greek goddess of victory), that was created about the 2nd century BC. Since 1884, it has been prominently displayed at the Louvre and is one of the most celebrated sculptures in the world. H.W. Janson described it as "the greatest masterpiece of Hellenistic sculpture", and it is one of a small number of major Hellenistic statues surviving in the original, rather than Roman copies. The sculptor is unknown, although Paul MacKendrick suggests that Pythokritos of Lindos is responsible. When first discovered on the island of Samothrace (then part of the Ottoman Empire) and published in 1863, it was suggested that the Victory was erected by the Macedonian general Demetrius Poliorcetes after his naval victory at Cyprus, between 295 and 289 BC. The Archaeological Museum of Samothrace continues to follow these originally
established provenance and dates. Ceramic evidence discovered in recent excavations has revealed that the pedestal was set up about 200 BC, though some scholars still date it as early as 250 BC or as late as 180.
Despite its significant damage and incompleteness, the Victory is held to be one of the great surviving masterpieces of sculpture from the Hellenistic Period, and from the entire Greco-Roman era. The statue shows a mastery of form and movement which has impressed critics and artists since its discovery. It is considered one of the Louvre's greatest treasures, and since the late 19th century it has been displayed in the most dramatic fashion, at the head of the sweeping Daru staircase.
