Objectives
Surgery is the most powerful treatment that exists at present to treat Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and the associated Metabolic Syndrome (MS).
We cure or improve DM and MS in obese patients with most obesity surgery procedures, although some other more effective than others.
Bariatric procedures vary in the mechanism of action and gastric bypass have immediately effects after surgery, independent of weight loss, while restrictive techniques depend on weight loss.
Another difference is the amount of weight loss after different bariatric procedures. Therefore, the use of certain techniques in normal weight DM patients may not be appropriate.
Another challenge for surgeons that perform Diabetes Surgery, is to adjust insulin and/or oral anti-diabetic, anti-hypertension drugs and another preoperative medication after surgery. It is necessary to "walk for a road" never walked until now. The metabolic changes after surgery are profound and more detailed understanding can change several areas of Medicine.
We therefore need more information to face these challenges.
