Our high quality truss is available with three connection options: Fork Ended, Plated and Aluminum Fork Ended. We inventory a large selection of straight and circular trussing here in the Dallas area at XSF, as well as multiple locations across the U.S. at our Master Stocking Distribu-tors listed on the back cover. Our book-end and center-pivot hinges all include heavy duty stainless steel shafts and high quality oil-impregnated bronze bushings.

Our motto at XSF is “Not all roof systems are created equal.” We work with our clients to design a roof system that will meet their needs regardless of the size or shape of the system. Preliminary design and layouts are provided at no additional cost to the customer when purchasing a roof system. So if it is a standard 40' x 40' roof that you need, no problem. If your roof system includes 20 towers in an unusual shape, PA wings and is permanently installed on uneven ground, no problem. Custom roof systems at off-the-shelf pricing is what we do.

The XSF heavy duty ground support system (shown this page) offers a number of benefits over standard ground support systems and is capable of roof system trim heights of up to 60 feet. We also offer a light duty ground support system (not shown) for applications that may not require the strength of our heavy duty system.

Parasol offers a whole new dimension of lighting design and gives light-ing designers an unprecedented level of additional control and options in the deployment of automated lighting fixtures. XSF is proud to be the exclusive manufacturer of Parasol Para™Cart and KLR™ systems.

Parasol has developed a system consisting of self-propelled, wirelessly controlled vehicles, which travel along pre-determined guideways. Each vehicle or “ParaCart” is utterly independent of the other. Vehicles can move together in groups, or sub-groups, or individually. The Kinetic Light Ring, or KLR, enables the designer to move the source point of automated fixtures along a pre-defined path. Lighting designers will no longer be restricted to light sources that stem from one static point. Now, Parasol will move entertainment lighting into a whole new dimension!

From concept to design to a functioning lighting system, XSF has been an integral part of developing Parasol products. Contact us for more information, pricing and availability of the Parasol product line.

Truss Use and Inspection

Shownaboveisa20.5x20.5UtilityTrussthatshowsthetypeofdamagethatmaybecausedbyaforklift.Notethatthediagonalontheleft,theinternaldiagonalinthemiddle,andtheverticalmemberontherighthaveallbeenclearlymarkedwithred andhotpinktapeatthedamagedlocations.Thetrusswas immediatelyremovedfromserviceandsenttousforrepair.

It is our recommendation that inspection procedures should be performed on any truss that is in use or is scheduled for use. Truss inspection procedures should be performed by an individual competent in the use and inspection of trusses. It is the responsibility of the owner/user to inspect the truss or to hire competent individuals to inspect the truss.

Truss components such as chords and diagonals should be inspected for abrasions, punctures, dents or bent members. Each truss should also be checked to make sure all of the components are in place and have not been removed such as internal diagonals that are often damaged by fork lift use.

Truss bolt plate connections should be checked for cracked welds and/or plates as well as elongation or deformation of the bolt holes. Pinned connections (including inline aluminum or steel connections) should be checked for abrasion, elongation or deformation of pin holes, and deformation of pins.

All welds on the truss should be visually inspected for cracks or abrasions. Alternate means of inspecting welds such as dye penetrant testing or weld x-ray technology may be used. However, these types of weld inspections must be performed by a professional welding inspector and often times can be much more costly that simply repairing or replacing the truss.

The truss should be reviewed as a whole for camber, squareness and/or bending. In other words if the truss will not sit flat on a flat surface it may have been overstressed in use with no apparent damage on the truss members.

It is our recommendation that complete records be kept on file of the annual inspections.

Upon completing the inspection of a truss, should the truss show damage as listed above, the truss shall be taken out of service immediately. Clearly mark the truss unsafe for use with red tape, a sign, or some other means that will leave no question as to the condition of the truss. If the truss is not repairable it is our recommendation that the truss be cut into pieces to avoid accidental use in the future which could endanger lives. If the truss is repairable it should be set aside and discontinued from use until properly repaired.

All repairs made to a truss shall be performed by a qualified manufacturer’s representative or someone approved by the manufacturer. Records of the repair shall be kept on file by the owner along with the serial number and description of the truss.

Please contact us if you have questions concerning truss inspections or if you would like to have one of our representatives on site to inspect your truss. We offer full inspection services with records of the inspections provided to the owner along with our recommendations. We also offer truss inspection training and seminars which can be provided on site with your staff inspecting your truss under our supervision.

Truss InspectionThe proper use and handling of aluminum truss can significantly increase the lifespan of any truss. Always avoid unnecessary abrasive or impact damage to the truss such as dragging or dropping the truss if at all possible. Always use enough people to ensure that the truss is properly handled when moving truss by hand. Dollies should also be used when moving truss to prevent dropping or dragging the truss members.

When transporting truss by truck, take precautions to properly package and secure the truss and other items around the truss properly which will prevent rubbing and/or bouncing that could cause serious damage.

Always use extreme caution when moving trusses with a fork lift and ensure that the person operating the machinery is properly trained and certified in the use of a fork lift. The steel forks of the lift can easily damage the aluminum members in a truss if not used properly. If at all possible place the forks under the truss to avoid damaging the diagonals and internal members.

When handled properly aluminum truss is a relatively maintenance free product with a long life expectancy.

Fall Protection on TrussIt is our recommendation that fall protection always be used when working in overhead situations. Many times when working up at trim height there are not convenient lifelines or proper fall protection anchorage points within existing facilities. Other times the structures may be outdoors and the only option a rigger has while working is to clip off to the aluminum truss. There are dozens of other scenarios in which the aluminum truss may be required as a fall protection anchor. When working in these situations several important issues must be addressed prior to anchoring yourself to the truss.

First, is the truss capable of supporting the stress incurred from a fall given it's current load application? In other words, if a span of truss is already supporting a considerable amount of load is there enough capacity left in the truss to safely arrest a fall. After all, what good would the truss be to a rigger as an anchor point if the shock loading from the fall only brought the truss down on top of them? Load tables are provided for industry standard trusses by reputable manufacturers. Refer to these tables to ensure that there is a minimum of 1,000 pounds

of additional capacity available in the truss before climbing up and anchoring to a truss. To re-emphasize this very important point, if the truss is not capable of supporting it's current load AND another 1,000 pounds it is our recommendation that workers do not anchor to it as a means of fall protection. Second, is the system as a whole capable of supporting the stress incurred from a fall? In this situation there may be an instance where an outdoor roof system is loaded unsym-metrically and does not have the additional capacity required to arrest a fall. For instance, often times PA Wings are used on outdoor roof systems and the towers onstage of the PA Wings may already be loaded up to capacity. The lighting truss spanning cross stage, where a rigger might be required to work before or between shows, could potentially have the capacity to support a fall, but the tower it is sitting on does not. This is certainly a rare situation, but we present this scenario to raise awareness about using systems for fall protection. In the end it may be much safer to use a lift rather than climb on the system. Third, in the event you find yourself anchored to a truss it is important that the anchor point is at an appropriate location. An appropriate location on a typical truss is at a panel point. The panel point, also referred to as a node, is the location where two or more members are welded together on the truss. A good example of a panel point is the location where the two diagonals are welded to the chord of the truss.

TrussUseWhen attaching 2 trusses together always ensure that the con-nections are secure prior to lifting or loading the truss. This includes tightening all bolts and/or securing fork end clevis pins with R-clips. Once the trusses are connected together the span acts as a single truss. There are no special requirements to be met at or around the connections concerning load distribution or rigging.

When rigging a truss always ensure that the rig point is located at a panel point or node. This includes rigging to support mo-tors or rigging to structures above as well as lighting, sound or video applications loaded below the truss. The truss has been designed so that rigging may be applied either to the top or the bottom of the truss as long as the rigging is at a panel point.

Truss Handling

The information provided above is certainly not all encompassing and is provided only as a guideline to raise awareness about the use of fall protection on aluminum truss and truss systems.
