Community leader shot by taxi security

By Xpress Reporter

wo men are lucky to escape with their lives after allegedly being fired upon by taxi Tsecurity with high calibre weapons on

Sunday, 11 January 2015 at 11am.Local community leader Imam Hanif Pandor and

Moulana of the Stanger Jamia Masjid along with his out of town brother-in-law, Farook Randera (50) were leaving the Dawnside Area after their desired mechanic was closed.

The Xpress Times spoke to the revered leader at his home on Tuesday in which he recalled that fateful day. “I heard a bang and I thought the tyre burst but I heard more bangs after that.”

He also said that Randera, the driver; indicated that he was hurt and he pulled the white Toyota Yaris over near the Service Station.

Imam Pandor got out of the vehicle and said that he hid. At that point he claims the gunmen saw him, turned back and drove in the opposite direction.

According to an eyewitness account the local men were travelling in a white Toyota Yaris, with tinted windows, driving along King Shaka Road (towards Shakas Monument).

“The gunmen's white Toyota Hilux was on the Mahatma Gandhi Stop Street when I saw guards and heard gunfire.”

Witnesses on the scene allege that twelve rounds were spent allegedly by two security guards that shot at the Yaris from the bin of the Toyota Hilux. It is alleged that Randera suffered a wound to his right leg and lower back via two shots and Imam Pandor was shot on the fleshy part of right hip with the bullet now dislodged in his stomach via one shot.

One Erasmus Dam resident claims that KwaDukuza SAPS happened to be “at the right place at the right time.”The resident recalls coming out of his home while shots were still being discharged and seeing a police van parked in the

LIVES INTACT: The white Toyota Yaris that was riddled with bullets on Sunday just before midday in the Erasmus Dam area

Dawnside area.“I heard the gun shots and ran outside to see what

was happening when the shots were wringing out. When the commotion died down I turned to my left to see an officer pull out his pistol and 'turbo sneak' from the vehicle all the way up to the victim who was hurt in the leg.”

In what some are calling a case of mistaken identity and a vehicle that resembles “that of a hit man's vehicle with GP plates” police have yet to make arrests.

The Toyota Hilux, allegedly bearing ND registration; and allegedly having three guards and a driver went back up Mahatma Gandhi Street after the melee.

Major Thulani Zwane said that two cases of attempted murder were opened at KwaDukuza SAPS for investigation.

“The motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage and no arrests have been made.”

Imam Pandor reiterated to the Xpress Times that he has forgiven those that allegedly shot him.

He wished to thank the entire KwaDukuza community for their concern and support, the SAPS for their help and reserved special thanks to IPSS Medical Rescue Services.

By Xpress Reporter

The Af r i can Na t iona l Congress (ANC) Regional Executive Committee (REC) in the Greater KwaDukuza Region held a media briefing on Monday, 12 January 2015. This is following the Regional Conference held in December

Cesspool angers residents and

businessINFESTATION LOOMING: Residents came to the Xpress Times to complain about this part of Lindley Street that has become home to rats and with that the concern of businesses alike is escalating as the situation escalates exponentially as well.

The ward councillor has made an urgent appeal to both Ilembe and the KwaDukuza Municipality to tackle the burgeoning problem. Upon inspection the

area was found to have an unbearable stench and water flooded the area at times

Most dangerous species The remark “we are behaving

like animals” is heard very often. However, one has questioned man's behavior and conduct against that of an animal. Do animals rob, break in, steal, murder or rape? Magesi Maguga of Kearsney was with a co-worker when he spotted a strange sight. He noticed a man having sex with his neighbour's goat. Not convinced that he was actually witnessing a scene of this nature, he called on his building assistant to confirm that his eyes were not deceiving him. Both men decided to approach the couple and once their suspicions were confirmed, Maguga contacted his neighbours who all bore witness to this unusual incident which is not too common in these parts. The culprit was apprehended and police were alerted. The owner of the victim, Zamikhaya Gcabaza examined both parties and was convinced by his findings that the pair were engaged in sexual activity. Police could not obtain a statement from the victim as he did not have an interpreter at the scene. In the meantime, Wingi Dengwa (39), a cane cutter, has been charged with b e s t i a l i t y ( h a v i n g s e x u a l intercourse with an animal) was remanded in custody and granted bail on 31 December. He is due back at court on 4 February.

Lucky is so luckyLucky Mthembu returned home

after his festive vacation to find his home broken into. Clothing, groceries and a cellphone were missing. He began making enquiries and received information from residents. He contacted police who accompanied him to a suspect's house and recovered a brown jacket belonging to him. Bongani Gumede (34) appeared in court on Wednesday and is due

back this week to seek bail in this matter.

A menace to societyNot for the first time nor for the

last time residents of the old railway houses have been arrested for robbery. Bongani Hlape alleges that he and a friend Sakhile Zungu were held up by two youths and robbed of cash and a pair of takkies. They followed their attackers and on spotting a police vehicle reported the matter to them. They approached the railway houses and found the takkies. Upon seeing their victims and police, the pair sought refuge beneath one of the houses. Police managed to apprehend the pair. Simphiwe Gwala (22) and Smallboy Hlabisa (22) will seek bail this week. Unless the local authorities and railways work out a meaningful solution to this crime infested area, crime will escalate and become more violent and serious.

Bad start to the new yearA senseless attack on New Year's

Day resulted in the death of one youth at Ntshawini. It is alleged by the survivor that he and his friend, Halala Prince Sibisi (16), who would have been 17 on 11 January, were walking around the area at about 12:30am. They were approached by three youths of about the same age. One of the youths picked an argument. The survivor then began to reason with the other two youths. A scuffle ensued and during the scuffle, Sibisi managed to break free and flee. However, the youth got hold of him and inflicted several stab wounds with a dagger on him. Sibisi was rushed to hospital but was certified dead by nurses. The youths fled and the following morning all three were arrested. Two of the youths distanced

themselves from the incident and laid the blame squarely on the shoulders of the one who inflicted the injuries. The 16-year-old has been kept in custody pending a probation officer's report on whether he should stand trial or the case be diverted in terms of the Child Justice Act.

Court round upAs South Africans switched off

and enjoyed the festive break, for the criminal elements in the Lower Tugela area, it was “business as usual”. According to court records, a staggering 177 new cases were placed on the court roll between 17 December 2014 and 9 January 2015. The nature of the crimes range from possession of dagga (12), to rape, armed robberies and murder. Christmas day and New Years Day had their fair share of incidents. The most prevalent cases coming before the courts were assault and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm a total of 51 cases followed by shoplifting (23), robberies (18), rape (16) and housebreaking (17). Four murder accused appeared in court with the youngest offender being a 16-year-old killing another 16-year-old by stabbing him repeatedly on New Years Day. Whereas this information centres on the matters which came to court, there are no records of the actual number of reported cases over this period. Drunken driving matters are given a date six months ahead to allow authorities to obtain the blood analysis reports which has become a national crisis at present.

With such shocking figures, the levels of anxiety in the most affected areas ought to be measured by surveys and remedial steps implemented forthwith. Accurate information about what victims would prefer in this regard is thus particularly relevant. However, it has been established that alcohol is the common denominator in the majority of the assault matters and damage to property matters. In respect of

vic t im surveys, they provide several types of information which are key to the understanding of cr ime and local ized r e s p o n s e s t o c r i m e reduction. These surveys need to embody those crimes not reported to the police as well. This enables an assessment of the extent to which charges are real or a change in report ing tendencies. Presently the trend appears to be a reactive approach to crime rather than a full scale pro-active approach. An impromptu survey in the CBD revealed that there is not an integrated approach to crime with residents in t h e o u t l y i n g a r e a s , complaining of the high availability and easy access to drugs (mostly whoonga) and alcohol as problems. Police alone cannot fight this scourge and all service providers need to come on board. The low number of referrals by social services to rehabilitation centres por t rays a dif ferent picture of this claim with affected families claiming a “don't care” attitude by social workers tasked with this responsibility.

Matriculants 2014:

Best of the bestKwaDukuza matriculants top IlembeBy Xpress Reporter

The Class of 2014 Grade 12 l ea rne r s f rom the KwaDukuza Municipality, which is part of a family of four municipalities that comprise the Ilembe District Municipality, have scooped the top five positions in as many years. Four learners f r o m S t a n g e r M a n o r Secondary and one from Shakaskraal Secondary made up the top five in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations.

The number one learner, Serena Naidoo obtained seven distinctions that came from English, Afrikaans, Maths, Physical Science, Accounting, Life Science, and Life Orientation. She intends studying medicine at the University of Pretoria. Looking back at her matric year she remarked how important it is to strike a balance between studies and social life. “Hard work and consistency is the key.”

“Ensure that you take time-off to de-stress. I relaxed and took time off by playing the keyboard. Make time for yourself and to do the things you love. Looking forward to a new beginning,” said

Naidoo.Tenielle Pillay, also from

Manor Secondary; was Ilembe's second placed learner also securing seven A's and is accepted to study Pharmacy and is on the wa i t ing l i s t t o s tudy medicine.

This includes any public places such as roads, streets or thoroughfares, vacant land or urban areas. Five-year-old Tim liked playing in his shady fort. He liked riding his new speedy two-wheeler. He really liked to dig for squiggly wiggly worms, but his mother said he was too young to go fishing. There was one thing Tim didn't like, and that was onions. Tim's mother put onions in hamburgers. She put onions in spaghetti, and he had to be very careful not to eat some by mistake. Today she had put them in baked beans. It took Tim a long time to sort out all the onions. "Tim," said Mother, "hurry with those beans. Gramps is coming to take you to the farm." "Cool!" Tim swallowed a big mouthful. "Are there kittens?”

"Ask Gramps, he just walked in," said Mother. Gramps had lots of smile wrinkles on his face. He even had a pocketful of candy wrapped in crinkly coloured papers for Tim. "There are lots of babies out at the farm," Gramps said. Then he frowned. "Why are you pushing your food around?”

“Because," said Tim, making a little pile of onions on his plate, "I don't like onions."

On the way to the farm Tim told Gramps about his whole can full of worms, and his fort in the bushes, and about his shiny new bicycle."A two-wheeler!" said Gramps. "My, you are growing up!" They stopped first at the pig barn. Fat pink piglets squealed as they pushed their flat little noses at a big, grunty sow. "They're so oinky!" laughed Tim. "What are they doing, Gramps?" "They're looking for food," said Gramps.

"There's corn on the floor," said Tim. Gramps laughed. "They're not old enough for corn! Piglets can only drink milk." In the chicken house, fuzzy little chicks peeped and cheeped and hopped. They pecked at Tim's hand. "They're hungry! What do they eat?" he asked.

"Just very fine mash like this," answered Gramps, putting some into Tim's hand. "They're not old enough for hard corn or oats." The big, dark barn smelled of sweet, new-cut hay. Two calves in a small pen tickled Tim's fingers with their long, rough

tongues. "Maaaa," said the calves. Tim liked the way they nuzzled their wet noses into his hand. "Do they eat hay?" Tim asked. "Not yet. Just milk from their mother," answered Gramps.

In the hayloft was a nest of kittens like soft, fluffy balls of different colors. They made little squeaks and pushed their feet against mama cat's tummy. "What are they doing?" asked Tim.

“Just drinking milk," said Gramps. "They aren't old enough to chase mice yet." Gramps then took Tim home and stayed for supper. Tim's mother had made a big hot-dish with lots of good-tasting noodles. "Are there onions in that?" asked Tim. His mother sighed. "Yes. You know onions improve the flavour.”

Tim looked at the noodles. They really did smell good. He thought about the calves that weren't old enough for cow food. He thought about the chicks that weren't old enough for chicken food. He thought about the kittens and the piglets that could only drink milk because they were so small. "I wonder," he said, picking up his fork.

"What?" asked Mother. "Well, I wonder if I am old enough for onions."

Gramps smiled. "Try one and see." Tim stuck a small piece of onion on his fork. He shut his eyes tight, opened his mouth wide, popped the onion in and chewed until it was gone. "Hey!" he said, opening his eyes. "That onion tasted just like the noodles! It felt different, and it chewed different, but it tasted really good!" He grinned. "You know what I think?”

"What?" asked Mother. "I think I'm old enough for onions!" Gramps and Mother laughed. Gramps said, "That's wonderful! And you know what I think?”

"What?" asked Tim. "I think any boy who's old enough for onions is old enough to go fishing. Would you like to go tomorrow?" "Would I! Could I, Mom, please?" "Yes, you may," said Mother. "Now finish your supper before it gets cold.”

For me the quintessential part of Islam is the following beseechment every Muslim makes every day: “It is You we worship and You we ask for help. Guide us to the straight path -the path of those upon whom You have bestowed (Your) favour, not of those who have evoked (Your) anger or of those who have gone astray”. This is the essential prayer.

As a seeker of the straight path, I unreservedly condemn the heinous murder of innocent people in Paris by those with a sickness in their hearts and mind.

May the unity of the millions who stood shoulder by shoulder on Sunday in Paris be the beginning of a human bond that will work for peace and

Letters to the Editor

“This is the essential prayer”justice in the world.

This is the time too for Israel and Palestine to seize the moment and reach rapprochement with urgency. This is also the moment for the world to put extreme pressure on Assad to pull Syria back from the brink of chaos that is engulfing the world; and on Saudi Arabia to heed the call of Amnesty International and stop its brutal punishment of blogger Raif Badawi seeking the right to freedom of expression.

To tread the straight path, narrowly, is the only moral and political way forward.

69 dead after drinking poisonous home brew

(CNN) A homemade alcoholic drink has reportedly killed 69 people and sickened nearly 200 others in a village in Mozambique. A group of people returning from a funeral stopped off late Friday in an area where customers can buy a popular home brew -- made from sorghum, bran corn and sugar, and known as Phombe -- according to state-run Radio Mozambique.

Illegally brewed liquor kills dozens in India

(Aljazeera) A bad batch of unlicensed bootleg liquor has killed at least 31 people out of more than 100 who had been admitted to a trauma centre in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, the local government said. Police arrested the shop owner who sold the 200-millilitre pouches of the homemade alcohol for about 30 cents each. A raid of the shop uncovered large containers of chemicals, which have been sent to a laboratory for testing, district official R K Pandey said.

ceremonies in Paris and Jerusalem

(BBC World) Four men killed at a kosher supermarket have been buried in Jerusalem. At a ceremony in central Paris, President Francois Hollande honoured three police officers shot dead.

Last week's three days of terror began with an attack on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo on 7 January. A total of 17 people were killed by Islamist gunmen, including journalists.

Muslim man hailed as hero for actions in kosher grocery store attack

(Time) A Muslim employee of the Paris kosher grocery store attacked by a terrorist Friday is being hailed as a hero for saving multiple customers from the gunman.

When Amedy Coulibaly opened fire in the Hyper Cacher grocery store, employee Lassana Bathily reportedly ushered several customers into a freezer to save them from the attack. “I went down to the freezer, I opened the door, there were several people who went in with me. I turned off the light and the freezer,” Bathily, 24, told French network BFMTV, according to the Huffington Post's translation. “I brought them inside and I told them to stay calm here, I'm going to go out. When they got out, they thanked me.”

The film was a huge success and her performance was appreciated. Film critic Taran Adarsh said, "Anushka looks the character and surprises you with a confident performance. It's no small achievement to share screen space with an actor of the caliber of SRK and Anushka manages it very well from start to end." Her second film, Badmaash Company, also under Yash Raj Films, was released on May 7, 2010. She was praised for breaking out of the shell of the conservative and homely Taani to play the feisty and independent Bulbul, and her performance was applauded.

PK is a comedy of ideas about a stranger in the city, who asks questions that no one has asked before. They are innocent, child-like questions, but they bring about catastrophic answers. People who are set in their ways for generations, are forced to reappraise their world when they see it from PK's innocent eyes. In the process PK makes loyal friends and powerful foes. Mends broken lives and angers the establishment. P. K.'s childlike curiosity transforms into a spiritual odyssey for him and millions of others. The film is an ambitious and uniquely original exploration of complex philosophies. It is also a simple and humane tale of love, laughter and letting-go. Finally, it is a moving saga about a friendship between strangers from worlds apart.
