Vice P res iden t Chi Omega’s Vice-President is responsible for all of our members’ academic endeavors. The woman who is slated for this position is usual-ly an intelligent, well-rounded member who is helpful and involved. Her responsibilities include planning and executing academic programming so that the chapter is achieving and pursuing scholastic excellence. In addition to these roles, our Vice-President acts as a parliamentarian for all chapter meetings. Chi Omega prides itself on consistent academic success, so the Vice-President’s role in the chapter is extremely valued. To achieve our highest potential, the Vice-President follows specific programming guidelines, which are listed below.

Academ ic P rog ramming Chi Omega continues to show academic excellence and growth from year to year. Scholarship is one of the founding purposes of Chi Omega, and Nu Beta strives to promote the same ideals to each and every member. Contributing to the high GPA were the over 100 members who made the President’s List with a perfect 4.0, many members achieving GPAs over a 3.5, and more than ¾ of our members with GPAs over a 3.0. Chi Omega prides itself in making sure every member succeeds academically. The Vice-President and the Scholarship Committee ensure that all members know the academic involvement opportunities available for them. We offer an in-house tutoring program, “hooter tutor”, where older members tutor younger members in their same field of study. Study hall is offered in both the fall and spring semesters, and 8 weekly study hall hours are highly encouraged for new members. If a sister is struggling academically, we suggest for her to meet with a tutor and complete 8 hours of study hall weekly. Chi Omega also offers a test and resume bank for members to use as guidance in preparing for tests and creating a college resume. We acknowledge those that are succeeding academically each week at chapter by awarding “Chi Omega of the Week”, where members can anonymously recognize sisters for their academic success. Chi Omega provides designated areas of the house for study allows every member the opportunity to study daily. For example, the dining room and our informal living room are used for group studies or “loud” study hall. Our basement is used for serious study, and members are to study in silent. During midterms and finals week, our house staff transforms our basement into a mini-library, where multiple tables are set up to accommodate the many girls. Studies and lounges are also provided upstairs for members who live in the house. Along with providing year-round academic support and encouragement to all members, Chi Omega has several different events throughout the year that directly promote scholarship. Chi Omega hosts a scholarship banquet at the beginning of every semester to recognize academic achievement of members from the prior semester. Members who obtain a 3.5 semester GPA are invited, and monetary awards and prizes are given for girls that achieve a 3.7 or higher. There is a keynote speaker who encourages continued academic success. In the past years, we have hosted Dr. Cathy Randall, and Dr. Dave Heggem. This is a huge incentive for members to achieve higher GPAs. Additionally, the Sunday night prior to exam week, we have a “Breakfast at Midnight (12 a.m.)” which is a relaxing time for members to eat at the house with each other and prepare for upcoming exams. To help members choose their field of study, Chi Omega has hosted a “Majors and Minors Fair”, where older members set up informational tables about a variety of majors to provide advice and insight about their academic endeavors. In addition, we have members in honor societies for their majors, including but not limited to: Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Health Honor Society, Business Honors, Beta Alpha Psi Accounting Honor Society, Beta Gamma Sigma Business Honor Society, and Public Relations Student Society of America.

Scho la rsh ip Goa l s The Vice President, along with each executive board member, is required to set S.M.A.R.T. goals for their position (SMART= specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, timely). Our most recent goals include:1. To achieve a chapter GPA of 3.6, a .09 increase from our Fall 2013 GPA. 2. To provide more tangible incentives for members in rela-tion to scholastics.3. To provide multiple resources for members to succeed.4. To be available to members who are struggling academi-cally, and provide influential advice and tips in return.5. To help members choose the correct major, minor, sched-ule, or career plan.

New Member Scho la rsh ip Our new members are the building blocks of Chi Omega, so our Vice President works to ensure they maintain a record of success. Her responsi-bilities include:-Prepare weekly lessons for the new member meetings-Attend all new member meetings-Work with the member educator prior to each meeting to discuss how the scholarship focus relating to that week will be implemented during that meeting-Ensure all new members sign a Grade Release Form provided by the college/university so that Chi Omega may receive members’ grades-Implement the Scholarship First Program-Mentor those new members who do not achieve a 2.5 grade point average in order to raise their grades to be initiated

Academ ic Ass i s tance For members that fall below a 2.5 GPA, a meeting is held with our personnel chair, our personnel advisor, and our Vice-President. The result depends on the situation the member is in, but there are possible outcomes. First, we always require the member to participate in study hours. Study hours must be done at the house or library, and an older member must sign off on them. Members also are assigned to a “hooter tutor”, where members who are in the same field of study work with the struggling member on a weekly basis to assist them with any homework, tests, or assignments they have. The Vice-President and the Personnel advisor keep these matters confidential, and are constantly checking up on these members to assist them with anything they need. Although Chi Omega promotes a welcoming environment, we stress that there will be consequenc-es for members who do not meet our academic standards. Members are most always placed on social probation, where they are not allowed to attend any social functions that Chi Omega hosts. Members are also not allowed to attend chapter or vote on slated officers, updated member bylaws, and potential affiliated members. Once members prove that they can maintain their grades above a 2.5 GPA, they have all the same privileges that members in good standing have. Because Chi Omega prides themselves on scholastics, our executive board tries to be proactive in handling unfortunate academic situations. Through our tutoring opportunities, multiple academic re-sources, open door policy through our Vice President, and various incentives, we eliminate most of the poor academic scenarios.

GPA Requ i r emen ts Although Chi Omega requires its members to hold a 2.0 GPA to be initiated, the University of Alabama’s Nu Beta chapter holds itself to a higher standard and requires our members to reach a 2.5 GPA. If a member’s GPA drops below 2.5, then they will be on academic probation. If a member’s GPA falls below 2.0 twice in a row, they will be asked to resign. Officers and Cardinal Cabinet directors are required to maintain a 2.75GPA. New members are required to take 12 hours to become initiated. Ac-tive members are encouraged to take 12 hours, but special cases are made for members who take 6 hours due to personal reasons or internships. This membership is conveyed in our by-laws, which is distributed to each member at the beginning of each academic year; which are attached.
