This Excel file was created by FAO for Vmerge (first version 20 May 2014) - Emerging viral vector borne disease, a Framework Programme 7 (FP7)-Research project funded by the European Commission for 2013-2016, and is Deliverable 6.1 within Work-package 6 “Dissemination and field implementation”. The project mapping file is placed on the FAO website and is also accessible through the Vmerge website. It lists compiled past, ongoing and future projects on Rift Valley Fever and its vectors.

FAO information products are available on the FAO website (www.fao.org/publications) and can be purchased through [email protected].
The file was filled by searches on Google, Google Scholar, Science Direct and Medline as also in FAOs project database FPMIS. Search terms where in English and French on "Rift valley fever" "Fièvre de la vallée du rift" "RVF projects" "RVF projets" and combinations of the above. The preliminary file was shared for input and comments with the Vmerge community in April 2014, and with RVF experts not included in the Vmerge project in May 2014.
This Excel file presents the compiled projects classified by category in separate spreadsheets. The first spreadsheet (KEY) contains an overview of all categories; one can navigate to these category sheets via direct links provided in the KEY. The final spreadsheet (TOTAL) is an overview of all the projects contained in all category spreadsheets. We recommend using the Find function <ctrl+f> to search the sheets by keyword and terms. This is a dynamic file that FAO intends to update regularly (also after the end of the Vmerge project) by sharing it with the RVF community. If you find any project missing or have comments, please contact us through e-mail ([email protected]), providing us with the link to the project website and/or with the information to fill the fields.

Rift Valley Fever risk assessment and early warning initiatives (risk assessment/early warning/monitor)Description
In Madagascar the focus will be on the use of weather and climate information in support of health services.
Scientific Opinion on Rift Valley fever1: risk assessment on introduction of RVF in Mediterranean Basin
The RVF Early Warning System at FAO is based on the approach developed by NASA [1]. The risk of RVF occurrence is assessed/evaluated using three parameters: (a) Precipitation forecasts issued by IRI (Columbia University) on monthly basis; (b) El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) forecasts issued by IRI on monthly basis;(c) RVF risk maps produced by FAO on monthly basis (based on NDVI and rainfall anomalies).
EMPRES Global Animal Disease Information System (EMPRES-i) is a web-based application that has been designed to support veterinary services by facilitating the organization and access to regional and global disease information.
The Joint FAO–OIE–WHO Global Early Warning System for health threats and emerging risks at the human–animal–ecosystems interface
Improved joint FAO–OIE–WHO Global Early Warning System for health threats and emerging risks at the human–animal–ecosystems interface: GLEWS+ : cross-sectoral iterative risk assessment at human-animal-environment interface.
To validate weather forecasts in West Africa in summer monsoon season. In the ESP group, the focus is always on supporting research in, for, and with developing countries.
This research, which spans the fields of human and animal health, parasitology, statistics, spatial modelling and environmental science, has the potential to deliver significant evidence to the holistic One Health movement
Development of Alert System for Outbreaks of Yellow Fever and Rift Valley Fever in Kenya
To increase the European capacity for real-time or near-real time surveillance and monitoring of the health burden of expected and unexpected health related events. Inventory of existing and proposed syndromic surveillance systems in Europe, including country visits for an in-depth understanding of selected systems. The project will also provide scientific and technical guidance for the development and implementation of syndromic surveillance systems for both human and animal health
Countermeasures to Prevent, Mitigate, and Control Rift Valley Fever (Rvf)
Monitoring and predicting disease outbreaks early. DoD Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center's Global Emerging Infections System (AFHSC-GEIS) Operations Division in collaboration with AFHSC-GEIS GIMMS Group at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (NASA/GSFC), and the USDA-ARS Center for Medical, Agricultural, and Veterinary Entomology (USDA-ARS CMAVE) accomplishes that goal, at least for one disease: Rift Valley fever (RVF).
Develop a geographic information system (GIS)/remotely sensed early warning model system for potential Rift Valley fever (RVF) risk in the US using mosquito population surveillance data collected by mosquito control and public health agencies, and climate data measured by satellites, such as vegetation index and land surface temperature, and terrestrial weather stations; develop mathematical and simulative models of RVFV epidemiology in the US to test a variety of mitigation strategies, including vaccine development and deployment, reduction and control of mosquito populations, and livestock movement reduction and ban.
Using the tele-epidemiology technique developed in 2003 for the Ferlo region in Senegal, by the French Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES) allowed realizing dynamic maps of cattle exposure risk to RVF carriers by associating triggering factors such as rain events, carriers’ density (Aedes vexans and Culex poicilipes) and hosts’ presence (livestock): the wet season of 2009/2010 is used to validate this method through a study (entomological measures and animal health surveys) in the Ferlo region and to combine this with Socio-economic surveys and regarding climate change: to study the impact of climate variability (from seasonal to low frequencies, including trends and climate changes) on pluviometry and therefore on risk forecast.
Improve the mechanistic understanding of the relationship between mosquito abundance, succession, rainfall and vegetation, wild and domestic ruminant immunity to the virus at multiple scales and in multiple species and a better understanding of the patterns of human infection with RVFV in South Africa

Aim
FAO Animal Health Manual No. 15 Contingency planning
(back to KEY)
Health communication and training of local (animal) health workers on Rift Valley Fever in Tanzania
diagnosis of animal diseases; epidemio-surveillance; fieldvalidation of diagnostic tests, looking into potential RVF vectors
Mathematical model was developed to study RVF outbreak probability and spread: risk maps were created.
Partner states have formulated a multi-sectoral task force of experts on RVF to review the situation and prepare an action plan for emergency preparedness and response.
Regional Plan of action for Rift Valley Fever (RVF) Emergency preparedness and response in East Africa
Strategy for a comprehensive Rift Valley Fever (RVF) public awareness campaign at community, national and regional levels in East Africa.
To study recent and longer standing infection with RVF in both people and livestock. The exposure status in livestock and people will be coupled with vector mosquito studies in the same localities. In the seasonal flooding plains of the Kilombero river valley which mimics unusual precipitation increase on annual basis.
Multiple activities and outputs on Rift Valley Fever
Guidelines, information on disease outbreaks and more
Outbreak containment system of YF and RVF is strengthened in Kenya through the development of rapid diagnostics and establishment of a sustainable outbreak vigilance and response mechanism.
A new compartmentalized ordinary differential equation model of RVF to assess disease spread in both time and in space; with the latter driven as a function of contact networks. Humans and livestock hosts and two species of vector mosquitoes are included in the model. The model is based on weighted contact networks, where nodes of the networks represent geographical regions and the weights represent the level of contact between regional pairings for each set of species
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) is the national public health insitute for South Africa. It provides reference microbiology, virology, epidemiology, surveillance and public health research to support the government's response to communicable disease threats.
1300 blood samples from selected EMINI participants are examined to establish epidemiological data on six arbovirus infections (Chikungunya, Dengue, Yellow Fever, Rift Valley Fever, O' nyong nyong), as well on bacterial zoonotic diseases which affect human health as well as lifestock breeding success. Among the latter are Plague, Rickettsioses and Brucellosis. Results: High seropositivity rates have been detected for Chikungunya, Flaviviridae and Rift Valley Fever from sites with a proximity to large water bodies.
Preparedness RVF (veterinary epidemiology) Sweden
Conduct veterinary surveillance around quarantine and at risk areas.
Detection of disease outbreaks and inform authorities on diseases under surveillance: RVF, PPCB, PPR, FMD/vesicular disease, rabies, avian influenza, previously rinderpest, pasteurellosis camelidae
Apply diagnostic technology that has been developed in Nagasaki University to create speedy, low-cost and simplified diagnostic kits for the use of regional healthcare facilities and communities in Kenya and build a network for speedy 2-way communication between regional medical facilities and central government agencies, and put together a model early warning system for the speedy feedback of frontline diagnosis results.
Aims to reconcile different perspectives and needs from different groups/professionals (animal owners, veterinarians, researchers, policy makers) in disease control
Mapping animal holders, simulation with individual-based livestock demographic model and economic model
The primary purpose of this agreement is to establish a general framework for cooperation and establish a mechanism by which ABADRU and USAMRIID will collaborate in research on the potential for Rift Valley Fever Virus transmission by arthropod vectors in North America. It also establishes a relationship whereby each research entity can call upon the other for advice concerning research methodology and directions.
Understanding the epidemiological factors affecting disease outbreak and the inter-epizootic maintenance of RVFV: detection, characterizations; Identify determinants of RVFV infection, pathogenesis and maintenance in mammalian and insect vector hosts;better vaccine evaluation challenge model; Vaccine formulations will be developed to improve immunogenicity, onset of immunity and stability to provide better response to outbreaks and prevent RVFV epizootics
Identifying determinants of RVFV infection, pathogenesis and maintenance in mammalian and insect vector hosts.
understanding spatial and temporal distribution of RVF , risk assessment of RVF outbreak, risk factors associated with RVF seropositivity, modeling of RVF dynamics and decision tree analysis
1) Subunit (inactivated) DIVA RVF vaccine development and commercialization. 2) Various Lab and field detection platforms (nucleic acid, antibody); multiplex and field PCR. 3) Outbreak behaviour prediction based upon epidemiology and modelling for US. 4) Education and training of US researchers and outbreak first responders on RVF and other exotic livestock diseases.

Aim
(back to KEY)
Enhancing prevention and control of RVF in East Africa by intersectoral assessment of control options; Opportunities to link with climate change Integrated health and economic assessment for control options for Rift Valley Fever in Kenya (ILRI); Assessment and technology development for Rift Valley Fever (RVF)
To identify the key factors that contribute to the emergence of pathogens from animal reservoir, with human pandemic potential from pathogens with a zoonotic background. Focus on interspecies, intrahuman and interhuman barriers
Emerging vector-borne diseases, in particular: West Nile fever, Rift Valley Fever and Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever; creating common knowledge on the diseases, sharing and exchanging data, expertise, experiences and scientific information via regular meetings:to train the staff in using tools and technologies required for a specific and effective detection and differentiation of the pathogens causing the mentioned diseases, professional epidemiological studies, effective control strategies, and a better disease outbreak management
This program aims to alleviate poverty and improve the well-being of poor livestock farmers in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and South Asia (SA). This will be achieved by reducing the negative effects of animal diseases, disease control regulations and food safety standards that constrain poor farmers from accessing and competing in domestic and global markets.
Integrated Project of the European Commission that aims to identify and catalogue those European ecosystems and environmental conditions which can influence the spatial and temporal distribution and dynamics of human pathogenic agents.
To provide evidence-based recommendations on control options for more appropriate allocation of limited resources and to facilitate multisectoral RVF planning
As per June 2010, the EpiSouth Network counts 27 Countries (9 EU and 18 non-EU), which have identified and appointed 66 Focal Points, plus 7 representatives from Collaborating Institutions: aim is to create a framework of collaboration on epidemiological issues in order to improve communicable diseases surveillance, communication and training across the countries of the Mediterranean and the Balkans.
Reinforce the European coordination and capacities for the study and the surveillance of highly pathogenic micro-organisms: the construction and implementation of a pan-European high security BSL-4 research infrastructure.
The Global Framework for the Progressive Control of Transboundary Animal Diseases (GF-TADs) is a joint FAO/OIE initiative, a facilitating mechanism which will endeavour to empower regional alliances in the fight against transboundary animal diseases (TADs), to provide for capacity building and to assist in establishing programmes for the specific control of certain TADs based on regional priorities. The specific aim for GF-TADs is to establish sub-Regional Support Units (RSU) with a cadre of epidemiologists (REU: Regional Epidemiology Unit) and initially funded through the GF-TADs, integrated in relevant bodies (RSO: Regional Specialised Organisations)
Endemic area expert collaboration; field testing developed RVF technology
construction of a disease risk mapping system for three water-related high-impact VBDs (malaria, Rift valley fever and schistosomiasis) in Africa, accounting for environmental/climatic trends and changes in socio-economic conditions to predict future risk. HEALTHY FUTURES will deploy a bottom-up, end-user/stakeholder-focused approach combining field-, laboratory- and library-based research.
4 thematic sub-networks have been set up : laboratories (RELABSA), epidemiology (REPIVET), communication (RECOMSA) and socioeconomics (RESEPSA). The specific objective of REMESA is the improvement of prevention and control against the major transboundary animal diseases and zoonoses through the strengthening of the national and regional resources and capacities, the harmonization and coordination of surveillance and control activities
To address the risk of introduction, emergence and spread of known or still unknown vector-borne viruses (VBV) associated with two insect families: mosquitoes (Diptera, Culicidae of genera Aedes and Culex), and Culicoides biting midges (Diptera, Ceratopognidae) and will specifically target: Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV, Bunyaviridae, Phlebovirus), Orthobunyaviruses (Bunyaviridae, Orthobunyavirus, including Schmallenberg virus - SBV), and Orbiviruses (Reoviridae, Orbivirus, including bluetongue viruses).
The objective of this Project is to develop collaborative research to collect essential data for Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) epidemiology and ecology that has been neglected by the significant amount of research previously conducted on the virus. The project will strengthen South Africa’s leadership role within the African continent for the study of RVFV and other vector-borne diseases through a mechanistic understanding of the relationship between mosquito abundance, succession, rainfall and vegetation, wild and domestic ruminant immunity to the virus at multiple scales and in multiple species and a better understanding of the patterns of human infection with RVFV in South Africa. This research also provides the critical data needed to better predict the spread of the virus should it ever be introduced into the United States.
The new Zoonoses Anticipation and Preparedness Initiative (ZAPI), part of the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) public-private partnership, aims to enable swift response to major new infectious disease threats in Europe and throughout the world by designing new manufacturing processes (up to large scale) for delivering effective control tools (vaccines, antibodies/antibody-like molecules) against (re-)emerging zoonotic diseases with pandemic potential within a few months after the occurrence of first cases.ZAPI is a 5 years collaborative partnership between more than 20 European partners, including leading human and veterinary research institutions, non-governmental organizations, regulatory agencies, expert academic groups, and vaccine and biotech manufacturers. With more than 22 million euros in funding, ZAPI is the first true “One Health” project within the scope of IMI and unites experts in animal health and human health.
Aim and overall strategy of the collaborative project Aim of the project is the capacity building in the African partner countries to detect the presence of CCHFV, RVFV and NiV cases by modern molecular and serological techniques. These diagnostic techniques will be used for surveillance studies to determine the prevalence of these viruses in the countries respectively. For this purpose samples will be collected by the African partners that in a first approach in the first year will be analyzed by scientists from the African partners during training visits at FLI.

Implemented via multiple projects: Preparedness and Response, PREDICT-2, One Helath Workforce, FAO EPT-2, WHO EPT-2 EPT-2 has three overarching purposes: the prevention of new zoonotic disease emergence; the early detection of new threats when they do emerge; and their timely and effective control. EPT-2 will build on the lessons and knowledge from its predecessors and bring heightened focus to those “places and practices” that enable not just “spill-over” of new microbial threats, but also potentiate its “amplification and spread.” EPT-2 will also invest in the One Health policies and capacities needed for their prevention and control.
This project is cooperative project between Friedrich Loeffler Institute, Jena, Germany and the University of Mansoura in Egypt. The project funded from The Federal Foreign Office in Germany. Regarding RVF the project deals with the Examination of the risk exposure of new RVFV outbreaks, the Status of the dissemination and occurence of RVFV antibodies in livestock and intends to get an overview of the current status of RVFV vaccination in livestock.

Description(back to KEY)
To develop, evaluate, and standardize diagnostic assays and vaccines for RVF. The approach will be to develop a young ruminant animal challenge model to evaluate existing and newly developed vaccines and diagnostics for RVF. The collaborative project will include the evaluation of existing and newly developed diagnostic tests such as various viral genome amplification assays.
This project aims to develop a viral challenge model for the disease Rift Valley Fever (RVF) in Dutch sheep. This model will be used for testing the efficacy and safety of existing - and in this project to develop new - vaccines for RVF.
FAZD Center Overview of Biological Systems Projects, overview of RVF vaccine development, during 3rd annual Department of Homeland Security in Washington DC, 2009
LSD-RVF clone 13 multivalent vaccine (combination vaccine for active protection against circulation strains of RVF, LSD, SP and GP in all of Africa, registration trials completed). Monovalent emergency Clone 13 RVF vaccine (registered in South Africa, field trials in Senegal and Kenya)
Project profile with as one of the expected outputs: a single vaccine for sheep goats and cattle protecting against: RVF, sheep and goat pox, Lumpy skin disease and Pest de petites ruminants, with proven long shelf life and heat resistant. Targeted to Sub-Saharan Africa
Conduct clinical studies with the next generation of RVFV vaccines to determine their efficacy for disease control in Kenya.
Identify epidemiological factors affecting disease outbreak and inter-epizootic maintenance of RVFV.
The long term goal of this project is the development of vaccine platform technologies for Rift Valley fever that are suitable for use with multiple novel formulations of attenuated and inactivated or subunit vaccines.
To develop an animal vaccine against Rift Valley Fever (RVF) through the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Rift Valley Fever Control in Agriculture. The Innovation Lab’s ultimate aim is to protect livestock to help increase global food security, which is a priority of USAID under Feed the Future, the U.S. Government’s global hunger and food security initiative.
Researchers at KSU, in collaboration with researchers at the USDA/ARS Arthropod Borne Animal Disease Research Unit in Manhattan, KS have developed a bivalent, baculovirus-expressed Gn/Gc subunit vaccine for immunizing sheep and cattle. The vaccine is compatible with RVFV N protein-detecting DIVA diagnostics. A patent has been applied-for, and the vaccine is in commercial development with a private firm.
