More than half of the newly admitted students were ranked in the top 2 percent in their respec- tive provinces, municipalities and regions in terms of their National College Entrance Examinations, or gaokao, scores, which is higher than in 2015 and 2016. Among them, 91 gradu- ated from Shenzhen schools, accounting for 60 percent of the students from Guangdong Province. Of the 91, 19 gradu- ated from Shenzhen Foreign Languages School. In 2017, the school has seen geometric growth in its appli- cation numbers, with 28,000 students applying online, an increase of 50 percent com- pared with last year. Shen Jingran, a Shenzhen Foreign Languages School student, who was admitted with a gaokao science grade of 637, said: “I chose SUSTech because I’m not only evaluated on my grades, but also my comprehensive abilities. At the same time, I find the opportu- nity to learn from national-level academicians and meet foreign professors very attractive.” “In fact, I don’t agree with some opinions that education in Shenzhen is like a desert,” Shen said. “We already have Shenzhen University, and now SUSTech is bringing us an avant-garde educational model, where talents are gathered.” The university rolled out unprecedented rewards for top students this year. For the top 200 science students admitted from their respective region, SUSTech will grant them 400,000 yuan (US$58,823) for a one-year student-exchange at one of the world’s top 10 univer- sities. As for the top 400, they will receive a 100,000-yuan scholarship. Meanwhile, 70 percent of freshmen are covered by a scholarship ranging from 3,000 to 50,000 yuan. SUSTech launched in 2011 with a mission to reform higher education in China. Since then, it has widely been regarded as a pioneer and innovator for col- lectively moving China’s higher education forward to match the country’s ever-growing role in the international arena. In 2012, the Chinese Minis- try of Education acknowledged the university as a platform for experimenting with and catalyz- ing the reform of higher educa- tion in China. Its purpose is to be a top- tier international university that excels in interdisciplinary research, nurturing innovative talents and delivering new knowledge to the world. The university has 17 exist- ing academic programs, ranging from financial math- ematics to environmental and water resources engineering.
