Glimm †‡ Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY 11794-3600 Computational Science Center, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Upton, NY 11793-6000 January 3, 2006 Abstract Simulated mixing rates of Rayleigh-Taylor instability for miscible uids with phys- ic al mass diusi on ar e sho wn to agree wi th expe rimen t; for immisci ble ui ds wi th physical values of surface tension the numerical data lies in the center of the experi- menta l values. The simulations are based on an improved front trac king algorithm to control numerical surface tension and on improved physical modeling to allow physical va lues of mass diusion or surface tension. Compressi bilit y , after correction for vari- able density eects, has also been shown to have a strong inuence on mixing rates. In summary, we nd signicant dependence of the mixing rates on scale breaking phe- nome na. W e introduce tools to analyze the bubble merger process and conr m that bubble interactions, as in a bubble merger model, drive the mixing growth rate.
