1 Xavier University of Louisiana National Alumni Association Board of Governors Meeting Nov 21, 2014 1. President Vivian Guillory called the meeting to order at 9:10am. After the opening prayers by Sr. Grace Mary, SBS, attendees had an opportunity to introduce themselves. 2. Recording Secretary’s Report Dionne Gremillion Barnum reminded everyone that the BOG May 2013 minutes were available on Xavier’s website (http://xulaalumni.com/board-of-governors). A motion was passed (by Dionne) to accept the minutes and seconded by James Paschal; all in favor; no one opposed. 3. President’s Report 1. Vivian Guillory spoke about the efforts of the 2012 – 2014 executive board and the need for additional committees to facilitate the association’s overall governance. 2. Dr. Francis welcomed everyone in attendance 2. Highlights from Dr. Francis -Thanked Vivian for her service over the last 2 years. -Reflected on his decision to retire. He made a commitment to XU in 1957 but also took wedding vows 59 years ago and his wife needs him now. - Reflected on Xavier comeback after hurricane Katrina -Reflected on Saint Katharine Drexel commitment to Xavier -Today the ‘stem’ field is the hottest brand. XU top 5 in producing African- American ‘STEM’ graduates. -Received a $20 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH)

1. President Vivian Guillory called the meeting to order at 9:10am. After the opening prayers by Sr. Grace Mary, SBS, attendees had an opportunity to introduce themselves.

2. Recording Secretary’s Report

Dionne Gremillion Barnum reminded everyone that the BOG May 2013 minutes were available on Xavier’s website

(http://xulaalumni.com/board-of-governors). A motion was passed (by Dionne) to accept the minutes and seconded by James Paschal; all in favor; no one opposed.

3. President’s Report

1. Vivian Guillory spoke about the efforts of the 2012 – 2014 executive board and the need for additional committees to facilitate the association’s overall governance.

1. Dr. Francis welcomed everyone in attendance

2. Highlights from Dr. Francis

-Thanked Vivian for her service over the last 2 years.

-Reflected on his decision to retire. He made a commitment to XU in 1957 but also took wedding vows 59 years ago and his wife needs him now.

- Reflected on Xavier comeback after hurricane Katrina

-Reflected on Saint Katharine Drexel commitment to Xavier

-Today the ‘stem’ field is the hottest brand. XU top 5 in producing African-American ‘STEM’ graduates.

-Number one producer of African-Americans receiving a PH.D in the life sciences.

-Adding a PH.D curriculum in education.

-Dr. Francis was recognized by Ebony magazine.

-Number one priority raising scholarship money

-Focusing on areas to increase our enrollment numbers:

1). Health Center/Student Gym – in progress

2). Need a new dorm for males

3). KD female dorm needs a makeover

-Technology is the future. Xavier looking at a larger online presence and ensuring we keep our quality.

-How can alumni help? Tell us about students regardless of their interested discipline

- The economy will demand teachers in the future

-The new civil rights revolution will be education

-There are still disparities between minority and the majority. We’re not all on the same playing field. Race, color and gender still matters in this country.

-House of Studies space could become another ‘specialty’ dorm.

-If we increase our footprint in ‘education’ the more we can contribute

-We like to see student base at 3500. Right now we’re around 3000 students before Katrina we were at 4000. XULA is the 2nd largest HBCU at 3000, average is 1200.

1. Demetria George Caston, 1st VP, presented the resource and development report.

2. The message from the Resource and Development committee ties to Dr. Francis’s message on scholarships. Information on the “47for47” fundraising initiative, in honor of Dr. Francis, was shared with the BOG. Additional information can be found below.

1. Bylaws Committee

1. Recommendations to the Board of Governors to amend the Bylaws for the 3 below Articles.

1. Article 1, name

2. Article VIII, Nominations and Elections

3. Article XI, Times for amending the Bylaws

3. A motion was passed by Cynthia H. to accept and seconded by Mildred G; all in favor; no one opposed.

2. Nomination and Election Committee

1. Brendolyn Miller McKenna presented the nomination and election committee report.

1. The committee shared with the Board of Governors the process for the 2015 – 2017 elections.

2. The following officers were elected to serve the University National Alumni Association for 2015 – 2017.

1. President - James Paschal ‘57

2. First Vice-President – Demetria George Caston ‘98

3. Second Vice-President - Trevor Thompson ‘91

4. Corresponding Secretary – Gwendolyn Catchings ‘74

5. Recording Secretary – Dionne Gremillion Barnum ‘85

6. Treasurer – Kevin Barnes ‘10

3. Director’s Report

1. Kim Reese presented the Office of Alumni Relations Report.

2. Major highlights included the Give Love Xavier Day 2014 and the work with the young alumni and the integrated work into the 2014 homecoming weekend.

New Chapter Update

4. 2nd VP Trevor Thompson, 2nd VP, shared with the BOG the list of new chapters being organized.

5. The Nashville Chapter was chartered this year

1. Awards Committee

1. Elise Tureaud Nicholls presented the awards committee report.

2. Installation of the new 2015 – 2017 officers (names provided above).

3. The awards committee selected Dr. James Paschal the Victor H. Labat Alumnus of the Year – 2014 award.

4. Dr. Brandy Gallien was selected for the National Alumni Council/UNCF Outstanding Alumnus Hall of Honor honoree as XULA representative at the NAC/UNCF Annual Conference

2. Young Alumni Group

1. Nadrea Reeves Njoku presented the report for the Young Alumni Group.

2. Topics included “why is this work important” - Increased and innovative efforts to engage young alumni will result in service and donations to the institution.

3. Goals includes maintaining momentum of the homecoming experience to create traditions of young alumni participation in homecoming events and to engage the young alumni in strategic donations campaigns going forward

3. Caroline Hunter Archive Committee proposal

1. Caroline (class of 1968) proposed to establish an Alumni Archival Library at Xavier University
