Bed/Stretcher/Exam Table

PURPOSE: To provide a clean stretcher, bed, and exam table for patients

MATERIALS:• Disposable gloves• If needed:

- Disposable gown - Disposable mask

• Prepared Cleaner/Disinfectant solution in cleaning bucket• Container for dirty cloths (if using reusable cleaning cloths)• Cleaning cloths

CLEANING STEPS

1 Do a Risk Assessment •Determineriskofexposuretogermsandthe

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required for _the task.

•WearthecorrectPPEtosafelydothejob.

2 Cleaning Frequencies •Beds:Cleanweekly;ifvisiblydirtyandbetween

each client.

•Stretchers:Cleandailyandifvisiblydirty.

•Examtables:Cleandailyandifvisiblydirty.

3 •Useyourfoottolockorunlockthewheelsinorder to move or steady bed/stretcher for cleaning purposes.

•Alwayslockwheelsafterbed/stretcherisincorrect position.

4 •Raisebed/stretchertoacomfortableworkinglevel using the raising and lowering mechanism (crank/foot pedal or electric switch).

•Lowerthesiderailsforeasieraccessforcleaning.

5 MattressCleaningforBedorStretcher •Wipethetopandsidesofthemattressusingthe

cleaning cloths.

•Liftthemattressandwipethebottomsurface.

•Removethemattress(ifpossible)fromthebed/stretcher and let air dry.

FrameCleaningforBedorStretcher•Raisetheheadofbedorstretcherandwipetheentireframethoroughlyincluding top, sides, and underneath.

•Repeatthisstepwiththefootofthebed.

•Wipefront,backandsidesofheadboardandfootboardonthebed.

•Wipeallsurfacesofhand/siderails.

Exam Table•Raisetheheadoftheexamtable(ifpossible)andwipeallsurfaces.

•Raisethefootoftheexamtable(ifpossible)andwipeallsurfaces.

•Wipehightouchareassuchashandlesandstirrups.

•Checktheinsideoftheexamtabledrawers/cupboardsinordertocleanthesurfaces where blood and/or body fluids may have spilled.

8 Pillows •Wipeallsurfacesofpillowsandallowtoairdry.

9 •Removeglovesandputingarbage.

•Dohandhygiene.

10 FinishingUp •Followingyourfacility’sprotocol,makeup the bed/stretcher/exam table:

- Put paper cover on exam table - Put bedding on bed/stretcher - Put covers on pillows.

•Repositionbed/stretcherandlockwheels.

•Reportanybroken/damageditemsto supervisor.
