Our Chrisan faith abounds in paradoxes. Our beliefs are
not usually “either-or”, but more oen “both-and”. Jesus is
fully human and fully divine. God is perfect jusce and perfect
mercy. The Holy Trinity is Three Persons and One God.
When it comes to God’s kingdom, it is somemes described
as both “already” and “not yet”. The season of Advent captures
this apparent contradicon, and we mark it as the beginning of
our liturgical year. This Sunday we commence a year-long
meditaon on the life and teaching, death and resurrecon of
Jesus, this me with St. Luke as our weekly tour guide.
So if today is supposed to be a beginning, why is it that
Jesus seems to be talking about The End?
Advent is indeed a beginning, but it also reflects the cycle
of our earthly life. The circular Advent wreath provides a
visual symbol of this journey with the Lord. We remember
to keep the end in mind, even as we take our first steps in
the new year. We must never forget the drama in which we
parcipate, and the ulmate goal toward which we strive –
the triumph of Jesus over the enre universe, celebrated last
week with Christ the King. So the same phrases echo in
church today: “And then they will see the Son of Man
coming in a cloud with power and great glory. But when
these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads
because your redempon is at hand.”
Advent is a me of preparaon and
watchfulness and waing, a me to
make ready for the Lord’s coming. Any
mother can tell you that the
ancipaon of pregnancy is filled with
moments of promise and grace and
trial, but the onset of labor is almost always a surprise.
Like a pregnancy, there is something of a mystery to this
reflecve season. While on one level we look ahead to the
birth of the Christ Child and the wonder of the Incarnaon,
on a deeper level we examine our lives in the light of
Christ’s coming again in glory.
With this in mind, the words of Jesus take on a more
urgent meaning. “Be vigilant at all mes,” He says, “and
pray that you have the strength…” This readiness for Jesus
can only be achieved by invesng me and energy into our
relaonship with Him. Dedicang specific moments for
prayer, reflecng on the Gospel of the day or the
upcoming Sunday readings, choosing to contribute
something extra to those in need, taking me to reach out
to a family member or neighbor, making plans to get to
Reconciliaon – all of these habits provide a roadmap, a
day-by-day inerary for our Advent walk. Then we will not
be passively marking the days, but acvely waing, truly
inving and expecng Jesus to infuse every moment of
every day. When we wait in joyful hope, Advent will truly
be a me “to strengthen our hearts, to be blameless in
holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our
Lord Jesus with all His holy ones.”

Grace Notes Advent Dares Us to Dream - Advent is a me of
longing, longing for the kingdom made present in Jesus Christ. It is not a me to pretend that Jesus has not yet come. We do not long for someone whom we do not know. It is precisely because we have already come to know and cherish Jesus as our Lord and Savior that we can truly long for his presence. God with wisdom divine made us a mystery unto ourselves. Every me we come to a new level of self-awareness we also awaken to the fact that there is much more about ourselves that we do not know. And so, even our self-acceptance becomes an act of faith in the God who created us. So it is not just Jesus whom we now know only in faith and hope. Advent tells us not to be afraid to hope for the kingdom, a kingdom of jusce and peace, a kingdom of self-fulfillment, a kingdom in which the church itself is known not so much for its propensity to point out sin but, rather, for its marvelous ability to reveal to us that goodness made obvious in Jesus Christ. Solemnity of the Immaculate Concep;on of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Each year, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Immaculate Concepon of the Blessed Virgin Mary on
December 8; a patronal feast day for the United States. We remember that “Mary, ‘full of grace’ through God, was redeemed from the moment of her concepon” and that “the Father blessed Mary more than any other created person "in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places" and chose her "in Christ before the foundaon of the world, to be holy and blameless before him in love" (Catechism of the Catholic Church 491-492). This year is unique as December 8 falls on a Saturday. In order to celebrate this important feast day of the Blessed Virgin Mary as well as connue on our four week Advent journey as a Church, marked by four unique Sundays, we as Catholics parcipate in two Masses this weekend: one for Immaculate Concepon (either Friday, Dec. 7 at 5:00 pm or Saturday, Dec. 8, at 8:00 am) and our usual Sunday Mass on Saturday night or Sunday. Both of these Masses draw us closer as disciples to the essenals of our Faith during the course of our Church year and therefore to Jesus Christ and his Mother, Mary. This is a special opportunity for us to spend me together in prayer at the Holy Mass during the special (and brief) Season of Advent, to quiet our hearts from the hurry of holiday preparaons, and remember the true ‘spirit of the season’ which focuses on prayer, family, and the community of disciples to which we belong in Christ.

ANNOUNCEMENT A friend of mine once said, “Everything has a beginning, a middle, and an end.” As simple as it sounds, I believe that this expression contains a profound degree of truth. Over seven years ago, I began my assignment as your pastor. It was a beginning that was a liDle bit different than the ones I had made in my other parish assignments. The difference was that in my other assignments, I did not know how long they would last. At St. Gabriel, my thought was that I would be with you for eight years. How did I know this? It was because of the normal rerement age for priests in the Diocese of Green Bay. From me to me, some of you have asked me what that age is. My answer was the age of 70. The usual next queson was, “How old are you?” If I would be giving that answer today, my response would be that I am 69. I assume it is easy for any quesoners to draw their own conclusion. On September 4, I sent my leDer to Bishop Ricken formally requesng permission to assume senior priest status, effecve July 1, 2019. It is diocesan policy that changes of assignment take place on that date each year. Senior priest status is the formal church way of speaking about the status of a priest in good standing who has reached rerement age and is no longer formally assigned. The day I sent the leDer was an inauspicious day. Perhaps you may recall that September 4 was the day a bag of outgoing mail was lost at the Neenah post office. I waited paently for some me, realizing that Bishop Ricken is very busy and likely did not have me to respond to my request. About a month later, I menoned the delay to Fr. Luke Ferris, vicar for priests of the diocese of Green Bay, and he advised me to check with the Bishop’s secretary, which I did. She informed me that there was no leDer from me on the Bishop’s desk. I re-sent the leDer, and on October 11 received his response acknowledging and granng my request. What does this mean for St. Gabriel? The first thing is that unl July 1, I will connue to be your pastor. I intend to remain fully engaged in the life of the parish and in my ministry to you as the parish community of St. Gabriel. With regard to what happens leading up to July 1, I can tell you that the diocese will begin the process of searching for a new pastor someme shortly aer the first of the year. At this point, neither I nor anyone else has any idea who that pastor will be. What I can tell you is that the process will include some form of consultaon with the parish similar to the process conducted before I came to you in 2011. The announcement of a new pastor will probably be made someme in the spring months of the year. With regard to my own intenons, my plan aer assuming senior priest status is to live some place in the Fox Valley, so I will sll be in the neighborhood. I will be available for weekend and weekday Mass help out commitments on an “as is needed” basis in parishes throughout the diocese. As you might guess, I will also connue to be the spiritual director of the Global Outreach program for a number of years as long as God gives me the good health and ability to do that ministry. In the days and months ahead, there will be me to say other things that need to be said. For now, I want to thank so many of you who have given me your support and have embraced the mission of our parish with such inspiring dedicaon. St. Gabriel is a wonderful community of missionary disciples and I feel privileged to make the journey of discipleship with you.
Fr. Larry
